Writ of mandamus, 8 February, 13 Richard II
HEREFORD AND THE ADJACENT MARCH OF WALES. Inq. (indented) taken at Hereford, Saturday before the Annunciation, 13 Richard II.
She held on the day of her death the under-mentioned third part of the manor of Crikhowell &c. as her dower after the death of the said Hugh.
She also held the under-mentioned two-thirds of the manor of Cowarn &c. in fee tail, to wit, to her and the said Hugh and the heirs of their bodies, by gift and feoffment of Richard Broun, Roger Parker and William Whitynton.
Crikhowell. A third part of the manor, with a rent of 5 marks yearly in Crikhowell called ‘newerent’, held of Roger de Mortuo Mari, earl of March, a minor in the king’s wardship, as of the lordship of Dunas, by knight’s service.
Cowarn. Two-thirds of the manor (together with the reversion of the other third part which Pernell late the wife of Grimbald Pauncefot, then living, held in dower after the death of the said Grimbald, Hugh’s brother), held of Henry earl of Derby and Margaret his wife, in right of the said Margaret, who was then a minor in the king’s wardship, as of the honor of Brecon by knight’s service.
She died on 20 May, 5 Richard II. John Pauncefot, her son by the said Hugh, aged 21 years on Wednesday after Martinmas last, is her heir.
Since her death Richard Ruyhale has occupied the premises in Crikhowell and the two-thirds of the manor of Cowarne, and taken the issues and profits thereof, by what title the jurors know not. The aforesaid Pernell died on 4 May, 9 Richard II, since when Henry earl of Derby has occupied the other third part of the same manor and taken the issues and profits thereof, by what title the jurors know not.

Writ, 29 March, 13 Richard II
SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Faarham, Thursday, 7 April, 13 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor for life by gift and grant of Nicholas Stille and Thomas Walbroun by a fine levied in the king’s court with the king’s licence, with remainder to Richard Wayte, son of Isabel his late wife, and the heirs of Richard’s body, and in default of such heirs to the right heirs of the said Isabel.
Wymeryng. The manor, held of the king in chief by service of 1d. to be paid yearly at the Exchequer in Michaelmas term by the hands of the sheriff.
He died on Palm Sunday, 27 March last. John Roucle, his son, aged 40 years and more, is his heir to any lands which he may have held elsewhere in his demesne as of fee.
Writ to Thomas de Haxay, keeper of the writs of the Common Bench, to send into Chancery a transcript of the note of a fine levied in the king’s court in 6 Richard II between Nicholas Stille and Thomas Walbroun, querents, and Geoffrey Roucle and Isabel his wife, deforciants, touching the manor of Wymeryng. 8 May, 13 Richard II.
Transcript of the said note, shewing that the said Geoffrey and Isabel acknowledged the manor to be the right of Nicholas, and that thereupon the said Nicholas and Thomas granted that the same manor, which on the day of the fine was held by Richard Chike and Margery his wife, for the life of Margery, of the inheritance of Nicholas, should after the death of Margery remain to Geoffrey and Isabel for life, with successive remainders to Richard, Isabel’s son, and the heirs of his body, and to the right heirs of Isabel.

926. William Sergeaunt of Bumpstede ad Turrim, idiot
Writ after the death of the said William, whose lands &c. are in the king’s hand by reason of his idiocy. 5 July, 13 Richard II.
ESSEX. Inq. taken at Hengham ad Castrum, Tuesday after St. Luke the Evangelist, 13 Richard II.
The under-mentioned messuage and lands &c. were taken into the king’s hands and are still in the king’s hand by reason of the idiocy of the said William.
Bumpstede ad Turrim. A messuage and 7 a. land, held of William Benyngton by service of 5s. 1d. rent yearly.
Hempstede. 7 a. land and 1 a. meadow, held of William Langham, knight, by service of 3s. 6d. and 2 capons rent yearly.
He died on Wednesday before All Saints, 10 Richard II. Joan daughter of William Serjaunt, his sister, aged 27 years on Wednesday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross last, is his heir.

YORK. Inq. taken at York, 1 March, 13 Richard II.
She held the under-mentioned messuages, lands, rents and manor in her demesne as of fee.
Barneby on le More. A messuage and 4 bovates of land, and 8 bovates of land in Yapom, a yearly rent of 2 lbs. pepper in Yapom, and 2s. yearly free rent receivable from the earl of Northumberland for 2 carucates of land in Waplynton, all held of the king in chief by knight’s service. The 8 bovates in Yapom are worth 4s. 8d. yearly, over and above 20s. yearly rent which Elizabeth late the wife of Robert son of Robert de Stodowe receives therefrom for life by grant of the said Denise, whether with or without the king’s licence the jurors know not.
Poklyngton. A manor (extent given, including pleas and perquisites of court), and 4 bovates of land in Meltenby, held of the earl of Northumberland in socage, by service of rendering 3s. 4d. yearly.
Meltenby. A messuage and 8 bovates of land, held of the prior of the hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England in socage, by service of 8s. yearly rent.
Meltenby. 4 bovates of land, held of the prior of Warter in socage, by service of rendering 3s. yearly.
She died on the feast of St. Thomas the Apostle last. John son of Robert son of Robert de Stodowe, her late husband, is her next heir, and is 7 years old.

Writ to the escheator to enquire what estate the said Thomas had on the day of his death in 36s. 7d. rent in Oulton, 26s. 8d. rent called ‘Fyldeston rente’, and a messuage, 30 a. land, 5 a. meadow, 3 1/2 a. pasture, a watermill and 5s. rent in Leveryngsete; as it was found by an inquisition taken before William Hastynges, late escheator, that he held the premises of the heir of Edmund de Mortuo Mari, late earl of March, but what estate he had therein was not specified. 24 February, 13 Richard II.
NORFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Holt, 13 July, 14 Richard II.
The said Thomas held the two rents in his demesne as of fee. He had no estate in the premises in Leveryngsete except in joint feoffment with John la Vylye of Bastewyk, Thomas Fyn, parson of the church of Letheryngsete, and William de Gatele of Saxlyngham, by gift and feoffment of Eustace Rous of Leryngsete and Andrew de Bathele, parson of the church of Bathele, to hold in fee simple to the use and profit of the said John la Vylie. John la Vylie, Thomas Fyn and William Gatele are still living.

Writ, 3 September, 13 Richard II
KENT. Inq. taken at Bylsynton, 16 September, 13 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor and parts of manors in his demesne as of fee on the day of his death.
Bylsyngton. Two-thirds of the manor, held (together with the other third part which Agnes late the wife of Alan de Twytham holds in dower of the inheritance of the said Edmund) of the king by service of rendering three cups of ‘mapyl’ at the king’s coronation.
Beracre. Two-thirds of the manor, held (together with the other third part which the said Agnes holds in dower) of the lord de Say by knight’s service and service of 3s. 4d. rent yearly at the manor of Berlyng.
Natyngdon. The manor, held of the archbishop of Canterbury, according to the custom of ‘gavylkende’.
He died on Wednesday the morrow of St. Bartholomew last. John Stablegate, his brother, aged 26 years and more, is his next heir.

The under-mentioned rent, messuages and lands came to the king’s hands by the death of Edmund de Stonore and by reason of the minority of John his son and heir, and are still in the king’s hand.
Aill’. 22s. rent issuing from 4 messuages and suit of court, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Buirton, Aill’ and Walton. A messuage, 100 a. land by the greater hundred, and 10 a. meadow, held of the earl of Ormond and the earl of …, services not known.

Repynghale. The manor called ‘le Uphale’ (extending into Repynghale, Rynggesdon and Kyrkeby), together with the advowson of a third part of the church of Repynghale, held of Thomas Roos of Dowesby by knight’s service, except 2 cottages, 2 bovates of land and 30 a. wood in Kyrkeby which are held of John Cheny, knight, as of his manor of Boleby, by knight’s service.
Staynthwayt. A cottage and a bovate of land, held of William de Tyfford, as of his manor of Haucunby, by service of a rent of a pair of white spurs or 8d. yearly.

Shypley. The manor, held of Sir William la Zouche, lord of Todeneys, as of the manor of Ilkeston, by homage and service of suit of court to the said manor of Ilkeston every three weeks.
Shypleye. 4 bovates of land, held of the same Sir William, as of the said manor of Ilkeston, by service of 6s. yearly, and also by finding six men for one day and six men for another day to mow in Sir William’s meadows at Ilkeston at the time of hay-harvest, or by rendering 6s. yearly to the said Sir William.

941. Edmund Vauncy, the younger
Writ, 8 April, 13 Richard II
CAMBRIDGE. Inq. taken at Newmarket, Monday the feast of St. Mark, 13 Richard II.
The said Edmund son and heir of Edmund Vauncy, knight, and Joan his wife, who was lately in the wardship of the Lord FitzWalter by reason of his minority, held the under-mentioned manor until 4 March last, on which day he gave it to Thomas atte Boure and John Chalers, chaplain, their heirs and assigns. On the following 7 March the said Thomas and John re-enfeoffed him and Clarice his wife thereof, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies.
Westle. The manor (extent given), held of the Lord FitzWalter by knight’s service. The extent includes pleas and perquisites of courts and leets.
He died at Horsethe on 14 March last. Clarice his wife is secretly pregnant, as the jurors understand. If she is not, then Joan his sister, daughter of the said Edmund Vauncy, knight, aged 27 years and more, is his heir.

HERTFORD. Inq. (indented) taken at Hertford, 7 October, 15 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor and lands &c. on the day of his death.
Loclebery. The manor, held of the duke of Lancaster, as of his manor of Hertforthyngebery, by service of 6d. or a pair of gloves yearly.
Watton. A toft and 30 a. land in the parish, held of the lord de Bardolf by service of 15d. yearly.
Aston. A toft and 30 a. land, held of the abbot of Redyng by service of 6d. yearly.
He died on the feast of the Annunciation, 13 Richard II. Joan wife of Thomas Priour, his sister, aged 28 years and more, is his heir.
John Sibile has taken the profits of the premises for a year and a half, and Thomas Priour has taken them for a whole year.

Writ of mandamus, 8 May, 13 Richard II
KENT. Inq. taken at Chydyngstone, Tuesday before the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, 14 Richard II.
He held no lands &c. in the county on the day of his death.
He died 46 years ago and more, day not known. Alice his daughter by Isabel his wife, born and baptized at Chydyngstone, is his next heir. She is 52 years of age and more.

944. Katharine late the wife of John Whitfeld, knight
Writ, 8 May, 13 Richard II
OXFORD. Inq. taken at Thame, 8 June, 13 Richard II.
She held no lands &c. in the county in her demesne as of fee or in service; but Thomas Barentyn and Thomas Doily were seised of the under-mentioned manor and advowson in their demesne as of fee, and gave them to the said John and Katharine and the heirs of John.
Whitefeld. The manor and the advowson of the church, held of the king, as of the honor of Walyngford, by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.
She died on 9 May last. She and the said John had two daughters, Joan and Elizabeth. Joan was taken to wife by Hugh Stretle, and they had a son named Edmund, and died. The said Elizabeth, aged 28 years and more, is daughter and one of the heirs of John Whitfeld, and the said Edmund, aged 17 years on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross last, is his other heir. Edmund married Margery daughter of John Rede on Thursday before Michaelmas last.

LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken virtute officii at Louth, Wednesday the eve of Corpus Christi, 13 Richard II.
John de Hardeshull, knight, was seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned messuage and lands, and gave them to Ralph vicar of Saleby, and John atte Uphalle of Carleton, to hold to them, their heirs and assigns. John atte Uphalle survived the said Ralph, and died seised of the premises.
Cokewald. A messuage and 2 carucates of land, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Robert de Alford, aged 40 years and more, is kinsman and next heir of the said John atte Uphalle.

946. John Schelve, son of John Schelve, the elder
WORCESTER. Inq. (indented) taken virtute officii at Evesham, Friday before St. Luke, 13 Richard II.
He was seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned fraction of a messuage &c., and married Maud Schelve, by whom he had John Schelve, son and heir of him and the said Maud, who is a minor. He died seised of the premises, and the wardship of the minor pertains to the king on account of the minority of John son and heir of John earl of Pembroke, a minor in the king’s wardship, of whom the premises are held. The said Maud is still living.
Schelve. Two-thirds of a messuage, of a carucate of land, and of 6 a. meadow, held of John son and heir of John earl of Pembroke, as of his manor of Inteberwe, by knight’s service.
John Schelve died on Monday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 10 Richard II. The said minor is 11 years of age and more.
John Blake took the issues and profits of the premises from the time of his death until the feast of SS. Gervase and Protasius, 12 Richard II, and is to answer to the king therefor; and from the time of his death until now the body of the minor has been in the custody of the said John Blake, but the jurors do not know where.
Writ to the escheator to assign dower to Maud late the wife of the said John son of John, after taking her oath that she will not marry without the king’s licence. 26 November, 13 Richard II.
Order to John Clynton, late escheator, to send into Chancery the assignment of dower made by him in pursuance of the above order. 26 June, 19 Richard II.
WORCESTER. Assignment of dower (undated).
The escheator has assigned the following to the said Maud as her dower of all the lands late of the said John son of John.
Shelve. A chamber at the end of the hall towards the east, the end of a barn there towards the south, the end of an ox-house towards the west with a bakehouse, and a third part of two-thirds of a carucate of land and 6 a. meadow.

947. Elizabeth daughter and heir of Fulk Corbet, knight
Writ to the escheator, on the petition of John Mowthe, who has married the said Elizabeth, to take proof of the age of the said Elizabeth; and to warn Elizabeth late the wife of the said Fulk, in whose custody are the lands of the inheritance of the first-named Elizabeth by grant of Queen Anne, to be present at the proof. 14 February, 13 Richard II.
Endorsed: Certificate by the escheator that Elizabeth wife of Fulk was present at the proof and had nothing to say against the said lands being delivered to John Mowthe and Elizabeth his wife.
SALOP. Proof of age made at Shrewsbury, Saturday after St. Peter in Cathedra, 13 Richard II.
The under-mentioned jurors say that Elizabeth wife of John Mowthe was born at Watlesburgh on Monday after SS. Philip and James, 49 Edward III, and baptized in the church of St. Peter, Abburbury; and is 14 1/2 years of age and more.
William de Coton, aged 89 years, says he remembers the age of the said Elizabeth because Robert his brother married his wife Joan at Stoke, co. Salop, on the same Monday.
Philip de Willeley, aged 60 years, says he remembers because a son of his named Hugh died on the same Monday and was buried at the abbey of Shrewsbury.
John de Whitton, aged 43 years, says he remembers because on the same Monday William de Munede married his daughter Joan in Abburbury church.
Thomas de Ondeslowe, aged 63 years, says he remembers because on the same Monday a sister of his named Alice was buried at Moneford.
Richard de Leghton, aged 44 years, says he remembers because on the same Monday the earl of Stafford gave a great feast at the castle of Caus and he (the deponent) was there at dinner when the birth of the said Elizabeth was announced.

John Corbet, aged 50 years, says he remembers because he was a servant of the said Fulk at the time, and was with him on the same Monday at Morton Corbet when the birth of the said Elizabeth was announced to him.
John de Eyton, aged 53 years, says he remembers because on the same Monday he set out for Canterbury on a pilgrimage in accordance with a vow that he had made.
William de Poliley, aged 44 years, says he remembers because on the same Monday he was at a wedding between William Camprich and Agnes his wife at Shrewsbury.
Thomas Gatacre, aged 54 years, says he remembers because on the same Monday he was at Abburbury with the rector of the church for dinner.
Richard Stury, aged 59 years, says he remembers because on the same Monday a son of his named John was buried at the church of St. Chad, Shrewsbury.
The jurors also say that the said John Mowthe and Elizabeth have not had any issue.

Writ to the escheator in co. Sussex to take proof of the age of the said Thomas, the lands &c. of whose inheritance are in the custody of Ralph de Cromwell, knight, and Robert Bardolf, knight, by the king’s commitment. He is said to have been born at Slaugham and baptized in the church there. 14 February, 13 Richard II.
