She held no lands etc. in the county; but she held the two under-mentioned eighth parts of a fee in dower, by an assignment made in the Chancery and by endowment of Hugh her late husband, the reversion belonging to Edward de Courtenay, now earl of Devon, kinsman and heir of the said Hugh, to wit, son of Edward son of the said Hugh.
Boklond. Thomas Colynton and John Durneford, who are still living, held of her certain lands etc. by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee. Paysford. Joan late wife of Hugh Cheyne, John Blacsale, Ralph Russyngton and Henry Partrich, who are still living, held of her certain lands etc. by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee. She held the said eighth parts of the king in chief. They are worth nothing except after the death of the tenants. She died on 27 December last. The said Edward de Courtenay, aged 33 years and more, is kinsman and next heir both of the said Hugh and of the said Margaret, to wit, son of Edward their son. |

She held the under-mentioned third part and advowson in dower, after the death of the said Hugh her husband, by an assignment made in the Chancery of Edward III, and granted all her estate therein to William de Fulburn, clerk, the reversion after her death belonging to Edward de Courtenay, earl of Devon, kinsman and heir of the said Hugh, as above.
Woksdon. A third part of the manor, and the advowson of a third part of the church. The whole manor is held of the king by knight’s service, as of the honor of Wallingford. She died on Wednesday, 27 December last. The said Edward is 33 years of age and more. |

She held the under-mentioned manor of Ebrighton in dower, by an assignment made in the present king’s Chancery and by endowment of the said Hugh her husband, who held it to him and his heirs.
She held the under-mentioned manor of Hille by gift of William Chebbesey and John Horncastell, chaplains, made by a fine levied in the court of Edward III with the king’s licence to her and the said Hugh and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of the said Hugh. She held the under-mentioned knights’ fees in Portbury and Ebrithton in dower, as above. She was seised of the under-mentioned manor and advowson of Corfton for life, the reversion belonging to Edward de Courtenay, earl of Devon, and his heirs; she granted her estate therein to Walter Clopton and Edith his wife. Afterwards the said earl by his charter indented granted the reversion thereof after her death to Hugh de Courtenay his brother, and Elizabeth wife of the said Hugh, now deceased, and the heirs male of the body of the said Hugh, with reversion in default of such heirs to himself and his heirs; and the said Walter and Edith attorned to Hugh and Edith accordingly. So the manor now pertains to Hugh and his heirs aforesaid. She held the under-mentioned manor and hundred of Brodewyndesore for life by grant of Robert Vaggescomb, late canon of Exeter, made to her and the said Hugh for life, with successive remainders to Philip de Courtenay, knight, and the heirs male of his body, to Peter de Courtenay, knight, brother of the said Philip and the heirs male of his body, and to the right heirs of the said Hugh. She held the under-mentioned manors of Colecomb, Exemynstre, Ken, Chylmelegh and Chalvelegh with the premises mentioned therewith in dower, by an assignment made in the present king’s Chancery and by endowment of the said Hugh her husband, who held them to him and the heirs of his body. The reversion after her death belongs to Edward de Courtenay, now earl of Devon, as kinsman and heir of the said Hugh, as above.
She held the under-mentioned advowsons of the abbey of Forde and priory of St James by Exeter in dower, by assignment and endowment as above. The reversion belongs as above. She held the under-mentioned rent in Holboghton and manors of Nywenham, Whitewill and Hunteber for life, by gift of William Chebbesey and John Horncastell, chaplains, made by a fine levied in the court of Edward III with the king’s licence to her and the said Hugh her husband, and the heirs of the said Hugh. The reversion belongs as above. She held the under-mentioned rent in Pole Antony for life, by gift of Mauger le Grant to her and the said Hugh her husband, and the heirs of the said Hugh. The reversion belongs as above. She held the under-mentioned manor of Touceneston and the rent and advowson mentioned therewith for life, by gift of William de Weston brother and heir of John de Weston, knight, to her and the said Hugh her husband, and the heirs of the said Hugh. The reversion belongs as above. She held the under-mentioned manor of Whiteford etc. jointly with Elizabeth de Veer, who is still living, by gift of Peter de Brus, knight, and Robert Dauns, chaplain, made by a fine levied in the court of Edward III and with the king’s licence to her and Elizabeth and the aforesaid Hugh her husband, and the heirs of the said Hugh. The reversion belongs as above. She held the under-mentioned messuage etc. in Stottecomb, Milham and Louecliff for life, by gift of Robert le Veer, knight, to her and the said Hugh her husband for life, with successive remainders to Robert de Courtenay for life and to the right heirs of the said Hugh. The said Robert died in Hugh’s lifetime. After Hugh’s death, while Margaret was still living, Edward de Courtenay, earl of Devon, granted his reversion of the premises to John Barneburg and Maud his wife, and the heirs male of their bodies, saving to himself and his heirs the ultimate reversion in default of such issue. Margaret attorned to the said John and Maud, who are still living. She held the under-mentioned 2s. rent in Stoke Daumarle and 1a. furze at Wodelegh for life, by a gift made to her and the said Hugh her husband, and the heirs of the said Hugh. She held the under-mentioned advowsons of Wodelegh, Stokedaumarle and St Leonards in the suburb of Exeter by gift of William Chebbesey and John Horncastell, chaplains, made by a fine levied in the court of Edward III and with the king’s licence to her and the said Hugh her husband, and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of the said Hugh. The reversion belongs as above. She held the under-mentioned 1a. meadow etc. in the hundred of Colyton and Yurdebery for life, by grant of Richard Brankescomb to her and the said Hugh her husband, and the heirs of the said Hugh. The reversion belongs as above. She held for life the under-mentioned lands and rents etc. in Huldeham, Cotteford, Boklond Chaillowe, Lokkesore and Middelton, which William de Chebbesey and John Horncastre, chaplains, gave to Sir William de Weston brother and heir of John de Weston, knight, for life, with successive remainders to the said Hugh and Margaret for life, to William their son, and the heirs of his body, to Edward brother of the said William, and the heirs of his body, to Humphrey brother of the said Edward, and the heirs of his body, and to the right heirs of the said Hugh. The said Sir William de Weston died, whereupon Hugh and Margaret entered into the premises and were seised thereof. Afterwards the said Humphrey died without heir of his body; and the said Edward died, leaving issue Edward de Courtenay, now earl of Devon. Afterwards the said Hugh died; and the said Margaret died seised of such estate in the premises. So the premises now pertain to William son of the said Hugh and Margaret, who is still living. She held the under-mentioned messuage etc. in Seylake for life, by gift of Robert Penkrich to Robert de Courtenay and the heirs of his body, with remainder to her and the aforesaid Hugh her husband, and the heirs of the said Hugh. Robert de Courtenay died without heir of his body; so the premises descend to Edward de Courtenay, earl of Devon, as kinsman and heir of the said Hugh, as above. She held for life the under-mentioned messuages etc. in Pontesford, which Margaret late the wife of Andrew de Medstede, knight, gave to Katharine de Boklond, now deceased, for life, with remainder to the aforesaid Hugh and Margaret his wife, and the heirs of the said Hugh. The said Katharine died in Hugh’s lifetime, whereupon Hugh and Margaret entered into the premises as into their remainder aforesaid. The reversion belongs as above. She held the under-mentioned messuage etc. in Bottesford, the reversion of which after the death of Maud late the wife of Henry Cornu was granted to her and the said Hugh her husband, and the heirs of Hugh, by John Southdoune, late parson of the church of Honyton, John de Horncastell, late parson of the church of Lodeswill, and William Ponton, late prebendary of Craft. The said Maud died after Hugh’s death, whereupon the said Margaret entered into the premises and died seised thereof, the reversion after her death belonging to Edward de Courtenay, earl of Devon, kinsman and heir of the said Hugh, as above. She held the under-mentioned manor of Norton by Stoke Flemyng and messuages etc. in Clifton Dertemouth and Hardenasse for life, by grant of John de Southdon, parson of the church of Honyton, and John Huddresfeld to her and the aforesaid Hugh her husband, for life, with successive remainders to Edward de Courtenay their son, and the heirs of his body, to William brother of the said Edward, and the heirs of his body, to Peter de Courtenay and the heirs male of his body, to Philip de Courtenay brother of the said Peter, and the heirs male of his body, and to the right heirs of the said Hugh and Margaret. The aforesaid Edward had issue Edward, now earl of Devon, to whom the premises ought to remain after Margaret’s death by virtue of the entail aforesaid. She held the under-mentioned messuage etc. in Broklond, Trill and Smalecomb, which William de Harewill gave to William Chebbesey for life with remainder to her and the aforesaid Hugh her husband, and the heirs of the said Hugh. William Chebbesey died in Hugh’s lifetime, whereupon Hugh and Margaret entered into the premises, and Margaret died seised of such estate therein, the reversion after her death belonging to Edward de Courtenay, earl of Devon, kinsman and heir of the said Hugh, as above. She held the under-mentioned rent of 20l. out of the earl’s manor of Mousebery for life by grant of Edward de Courtenay, now earl of Devon. She held the under-mentioned manor and advowson of Fareweye, which the aforesaid Hugh formerly gave to Robert de Courtenay and the heirs of his body, with reversion in default of such heirs to himself and Margaret his wife, and his heirs. Robert died without heir of his body, whereupon Hugh and Margaret entered into the premises and Hugh died seised thereof. After his death Margaret continued her possession thereof and died seised of such estate therein, the reversion after her death belonging to Edward de Courtenay, earl of Devon, as above. She held the under-mentioned manor of Honeton (except the advowson of the church thereof) by gift of Robert de Vaggescombe, William Bampton, William Ponton, Henry Borton and John Hoddesfeld made by licence of Edward III to her and the aforesaid Hugh her husband, for life, with successive remainders to Peter de Courtenay, knight, and the heirs male of his body, to Philip de Courtenay, knight, Peter’s brother, and the heirs male of his body, and to the right heirs of the said Hugh. She held the under-mentioned manors of Morton and Milton Daumarle with the advowsons of the churches thereof for life, by gift of Robert de Vaggescombe made by licence of Edward III to her and the aforesaid Hugh her husband, for life, with remainders as above (manor of Honeton). She held the under-mentioned manors of Alphyngton and Boltebury (except 1a. land in Alphyngton and the advowson of the church of that town) for life by gift of Hugh Segrave, knight, with successive remainders to Peter de Courtenay, knight, and the heirs male of his body, to Philip de Courtenay, knight, Peter’s brother, and the heirs male of his body, and to Edward de Courtenay, now earl of Devon, and his heirs. She held the under-mentioned manor of Northpole for life, by gift of William de Chebesey and Richard Brankescombe to her and the said Hugh her husband, for life, with successive remainders as above (manor of Honeton). She held the under-mentioned manor and advowson of Cadelegh for life, by gift of Robert de Vaggescombe made by licence of Edward III to her and the said Hugh, her husband, for life, with successive remainders to Philip de Courtenay, knight, and the heirs male of his body, to Peter de Courtenay, knight, Philip’s brother, and the heirs male of his body, and to the right heirs of the said Hugh. John de Ferrers, knight, John Daumarle, knight, and Richard Greynevyle lately granted to John de Cheverston, knight, and the heirs of his body by Thomasia his late wife, all the lands etc. of all their tenants etc. in Cheverston etc. (as below), with successive remainders to Joan daughter of the aforesaid Hugh and Margaret, then wife of the said John de Cheverston, and the heirs of the bodies of John and Joan, and to the said Hugh and Margaret and master William Courtenay, clerk, their heirs and assigns. Afterwards the said William released all his right in the premises to Hugh and Margaret, and they granted that, if John de Cheverston should die without issue by Thomasia or Joan, and Joan without issue by him, then the premises should remain to Philip de Courtenay, knight, and the heirs male of his body, at a rent of 40l. yearly to be paid to Hugh and Margaret for their lives. John de Cheverston and Joan attorned to the said Philip accordingly and died without issue as above. After their death Philip entered into the premises and Hugh and Margaret were seised of the said rent of 40l. After Hugh’s death Margaret was seised of the rent and died so seised. The said Margaret held the under-mentioned messuages etc. in Whitteston for life, by gift of Robert Vaggescombe and John Hoddesfeld to her and the said Hugh her husband, for life, with successive remainders to Philip de Courtenay, knight, and the heirs of his body, to Peter de Courtenay, knight, Philip’s brother, and the heirs of his body, and to the said Hugh and Margaret and their heirs. She held the under-mentioned manor of Southlegh for life, by gift of John Baret and Henry Burton to Robert son of Robert de Courtenay and the heirs of his body, with successive remainders to her and the said Hugh her husband, for life, to Philip de Courtenay, knight, and the heirs male of his body, to Peter de Courtenay, knight, Philip’s brother, and the heirs male of his body, and to the right heirs of the said Hugh. Robert son of Robert died without heir of his body, whereupon Margaret entered into the manor as into her remainder, and died seised thereof for life.
