Writ to Ralph de Sandwyco, the king's steward, to enquire whether the wardship of the manor of Cerveton which was of the said David, pertains to the king, 6 July, 5 Edw. I.
[Devon.] Inq. Tuesday after St. Peter ad Vincula, 5 Edw. I.
Suthinton. The manor was held by the said David of John de Mandevile in chief by service of ½ knight's fee, whence the wardship and marriage of the heir pertain to the king by reason of the lands and heir of the said John which are in the king's wardship; and no one has laid claim to them save only the queen, the king's mother, through her steward.

Writ to the sheriff of Cumberland of extent and partition of the lands &c. which Akina late the wife of William de Reny holds in dower, that the pourparties may be enrolled on the rolls of the king's chancery, without intending that the said Akina should be in anything molested, 3 Jan. 5 Edw. I.
Cumberland. Extent, Sunday after St. Scholastica, 5 Edw. I.
Neuton. The said Akina has in dower 28a. and 1⅓ perch land, a curtilage, and 9a. meadow in demesne, 13 bovates land each containing 8a., 3s. from cottars, 44s. 4d. from a watermill &c.; whereof Isabel de Horshey ought to have a fourth part, Nicholas de Walton a fourth part, Robert Cribbe and Joan his wife a fourth part, and Hugh Litilcombe (sic) and Joan his wife, and William le Pruz and Alice his wife a fourth part.
Writ to the said sheriff to send in the pourparties and assignment of dower for enrolment, 4 Jan. 5 Edw. I.
Pourparties of the lands &c. which were of the inheritance of William de Reygni, who held of the king in chief, made between his heirs, and of lands assigned to Akina late his wife in dower (undated).

The part of Robert Kribbe who married Joan one of the heirs (extent given with names of tenants).

240. Alice Late the wife of Ralph de Bochardeby.
Writ of scires facias to the sheriff and escheator of Cumberland, to warn any heir of the said Alice who desires to make any claim, to come before the king, who wishes if possible to restore to Robert de Kyrkeby 20a. land in Bochardeby of which the said Alice enfeoffed him, and of which he was in seisin for three years before her death, when the escheator ejected him, 11 May, 5 Edw. I.

241. Peter le Bastard.
Writ of plenius certiorari, to the sheriff of Leicester, on the complaint of Stephen de Nevill that the subescheator had taken into the king's hand a bovate of land in Wymundewold, which he had demised to the said Peter for his sustenance at his pleasure, and had assigned a third part thereof in dower to Emma late the wife of the said Peter, 20 Sept. 5 Edw. 1.
Leicester. Inq. Friday after the octave of St. Michael.
Wymundewald. 1 bovate land was demised by the said Stephen to the said Peter without charter for his sustenance for life without service, with reversion to the said Stephen: the said Peter did not hold it of the king in chief.

242. William de Bek.
Writ of certiorari to Ralph de Sandwico the king's steward and to the sheriff of Kent, to enquire whether Joan late the wife of the said William, ought to be dowered of a free tenement in Lyningesburn, 6 Feb. 5 Edw. I.
Kent. Inq. Monday before St. Matthias, 5 Edw. I.
Lyningesburn. Richard de Bek, father of the said William, by agreement with Master Hamo Dogge, gave seisin to the said William his son and heir and Denise Doge his first wife of a certain tenement there, and the said William held it by that seisin when he died and not by the courtesy of England; and Joan late his wife ought to be dowered thereof as it seems to the jury.

243. Nicholas le Heversham alias de Haversham.
Writ of cape in manum to the sheriff of Wilts referring to a previous writ, 24 June, 5 Edw. I.
Wilts. Inq. (undated.)
Winterburne, Hugemanton and Burton. In 26 Hen. III. Geoffrey Daniel of Winterburne demised to farm to Nicholas de Havershem the elder 3 virgates land there for ten years or until the said Geoffrey or his heirs should pay 50 marks, the said Nicholas or his heirs &c. doing all services to the chief lords of the fee: the said Nicholas held the same for his life, and after his death his son Nicholas held them as long as he lived, and dowered his mother Emma thereof, and after her death re-entered and died seised thereof: two virgates were held of the fee of John de Bohun by service of 6d. and suit of court; and the third virgate of the fee of Henry de Bovile rendering 10s. yearly for all service save royal (service).
These 3 virgates were never taken into the king's hand by the escheator, but all the tenements the said Nicholas held in Cumpton were so taken.

Unspecified.) 5 knights' fees held of the king in chief for the service of 1 knight, viz.—18 carucates land in demesne, 8l. 7s. rent of free tenants, nothing in villenage; and there are many free tenants (names given) who owe suit of court to the said manor.
Henry his son, aged 7 at the feast of St. Laurence, 4 Edw. I., is his next heir.

245. Thomas de Clinton alias de Clynton.
Writ to the sheriff of Leicester, 12 Jan., 6 Edw. I.
Leicester. Inq. Friday after the octave of the Purification, 6 Edw. I.
Olesthorp. A messuage, and 8 virgates land in demesne, 12d. rent of free tenants, 12 virgates in villenage, and 2 cottages rendering 6s. yearly, held of Roger de Moubray [who is under age and in the king's wardship] by service of ½ knight's fee; and 4d. rent of free tenants and 3 virgates land in villenage, held of the honour of the earldom of Winchester doing service of 1/12 knight's fee to the heirs of Winchester; all which he held by the courtesy of England through the death of Mazera his wife of whom he begat sons and daughters.
John, son of Thomas de Clynton the younger, aged 20, is his next heir.
Writ of certiorari to Richard de Holebrok the king's steward, to enquire whether the said Thomas and Mazera his wife enfeoffed John their son of 18l. land in Ullesttorp which were the free marriage of the said Mazera, or continued in seisin thereof until their death, so that the said land ought to descend to John, son of Thomas le Jeovene their firstborn son, who is within age and whose wardship pertains to the king by reason of the wardship of the heir of Roger de Muudbray, 6 June, 6 Edw. I.
[Leicester.] Inq. Thursday after St. Margaret, 6 Edw. I.
Olvestorp. The said Thomas and Mazera enfeoffed the said John of 18l. land there, and he continued peaceful seisin thereof for five days: after the death of his mother Sir John demised the same to the said Sir Thomas for his life with reversion to himself and his heirs, and the said Sir Thomas never after the feoffment entered but by the said John's licence: 23 virgates land are held of the heirs of Roger de Mouubray by service of ½ knight's fee, and 16 virgates of John de Bosco by service of ¼ knight's fee.

246. Gilbert Fraunces alias le Fraunceys.
Writ to Thomas de Normanville, the king's steward, 7 March, 6 Edw. I.
Similar writ, commanding him also to take into the king's hand the lands &c. of Michael de Hartcla and attach him to appear before the king to answer for having caused the said Gilbert's heir to marry the said Michael's daughter to the king's prejudice, 28 March, 6 Edw. I.
Return from the said steward that he has attached the said Michael &c. and sends an inquisition made concerning the lands of the said Gilbert in Westmoreland, but of those in Cumberland, York and Derby extent is not yet made (undated).
Westmoreland. Inq. Thursday in the first week of Lent, 6 Edw. I.
Meburnemaud. The manor, held by doing service in part to the heirs of Robert de Veteri Ponte, and in part to Alexander de Bayloll.
Wicksclak. The hamlet, held of Roaldus de Richemud, service unknown.
Starlech. The hamlet, held of the heirs of Thomas de Hasting', service unknown.
Thirneby. 3 bovates land, held of the heirs of John de Thirneby, rendering 40d.
Great Stirkeland. 13a. land, held of Henry de Auney, rendering a pair of white spurs or 3d.
Qwalle. 1 bovate land, held of the heirs of William Bekok, rendering 1lb. cummin.
Neuby. The manor, held of Lady Margaret de Rosse for homage and service, rendering 50s. yearly, but he did not die seised thereof.
Crosseby. 3 cottars and 1a. land, held of the master of the hospital of St. Leonard, York, by service of 18d. yearly.
Richard his son, aged 15 on the day of St. Dunstan next, is his heir, and with the consent of his father affianced the daughter of Michael de Harcla, and after his father's death married her.
Derby. Inq. Monday after the Invention of the Holy Cross, 6 Edw. I.
Haddon. The manor with the hamlets of Roulesleye, Basselawe and Bobenhul, held of the earl of Derby, service unknown.
Heir as above, aged 15.
Cumberland. Inq. Tuesday after St Mark, 6 Edw. I.
Le Neueland near Soureby. A certain pourpresture, held of Robert de Vallibus of Caterlyn rendering 2d. yearly, and 9s. 1d. yearly at the king's exchequer at Carlisle.
Routheclif, (extent given) including a fishery and mill, held of Sir William de Hardrudesehille (?) and his heirs rendering 2s. yearly, and the said Sir William held it of Sir Thomas de Moleton rendering 2s. yearly, and 14d. at the king's exchequer at Carlisle for cornage.
Caldebek. 12a. land held of Lady Alice de Lucye, rendering 12d. yearly.

Leicester. Inq. Thursday before St. Botulph.
Kybwrth. The manor, excepting 8 marks rent of which he enfeoffed Edith his sister for life, and 4 marks rent of which he enfeoffed Roger Tayllard for life, held of Saier de Harecurt in chief, rendering 20s. yearly.
Christiana de Wortynges and Agnes de Ewelle his sisters, Edith the wife of Thomas Tayllard, Peter de la Clyve, Richard Olyver, and Alan de Portemuwe, his nephews, are his next heirs, and aged 24 and more.
Northampton. Extent (undated).
Middelton. A messuage and 2 carucates land in demesne, ½ virgate in villenage, 2 dovecots and 2 fishponds, held of Stephen Cheyndut, service unknown.

Old Neuton. 6s. rent, held of the king in chief, rendering 5s. 6d. yearly to the king's hundred of Stowe; and 4l. 1½d. rent, pleas &c., and 24½a. land and pasture, were sometime held of the heirs of Dunfranville, rendering 2s. yearly, but long before she died she had demised the same for life to Reginald de Cretinge, who still holds them, with reversion to herself and her heirs.
John de Munteny, aged 28, is her next heir.
Essex. Inq. Thursday after St. John ante Portam Latinam, 6 Edw. I.
Schelflee. The manor, held of the earl of Hereford by service of 1 knight's fee.
Sir William de Clovile, knt., and Avelina the wife of Roger de Lees, derived from two sisters, and each aged 40 and more, are her next heirs.

Avelina daughter of Geoffrey de Cruce, aged 30 and more, is her next heir, as the jury understand; for one Oger son of Oger had a son Peter and a daughter Mirabel; the said Peter had a daughter and heir Amy, who had a daughter and heir Joan de Saunford, who died without heir of herself; and therefore her inheritance ought to descend to the said Mirabel, who had a son and heir Geoffrey de Cruce, and he had a daughter and heir Avelina.

Davenham. Land worth 17s. yearly, held of William de Bostock, rendering 16½d.

Writ to Richard de Holebrok, the king's steward, 29 March 6 Edw. I.
Lincoln. Inq. Monday the feast of St. Peter in Cathedra, 6 Edw. I.
Kyrningthon. The manor, held of Hugh de Nevyle, deceased, whose heir is under age and ought to be in the king's wardship.
Haburg. The manor, which long before his death he gave to Sibyl his daughter and the heirs of her body.
Keleby. Certain lands &c. worth 40s. yearly, which long before his death he gave to Robert his son, held of the said Hugh, who held them of the king in chief by service of 1 knight's fee.
Grymmesby. Three shops, held of the heirs of Grace de Insula, by service of 8d. yearly.
Malberthorp. 3a. land, meadow and pasture, held of the fee of Kyme without service.
Thethelthorp. 3s. rent, held of William Leveroun of Thethelthorp.
Herbert, son of Robert his firstborn son, aged 8, is his next heir.
Writ of certiorari, on the complaint of William, son of the said Herbert, that the subescheator had taken into the king's hand certain lands in Malberthorp, Thetelthorp, Trusthorp, Skytbrok and Saltfleteby, of which his father had enfeoffed him long before his death, 27 March, 6 Edw. I.
Lincoln. Inq. made at Luthe, Monday the feast of St. Peter ad Vincula, 6 Edw. I.
On Sunday before St. Peter in Cathedra last, Herbert de Saltfleteby gave to William his son by charter all his lands &c. in Malberthorp, Thethelthorp and Trusthorp, and put him in seisin by his letters patent on the following Tuesday, excepting 3a. in Malberthorp in which one William son of Robert de Malberthorp, and 3s. rent in Thethelthorp of which William Leveroun, did not allow him seisin; and on the same day the said Herbert gave him by charter all his lands &c. in Skydbrok and Saltfleteby, and put him in seisin by his letters patent on Wednesday following; and he so continued until Thursday when the said Herbert died, and afterwards for three weeks until the subescheator took the said lands &c. into the king's hand, because the said Herbert held the manor of Kernington with other lands &c. of Hugh de Nevyle, deceased, who held of the king in chief, and whose heir is within age. The above lands &c. are worth 9l. 17s. 4d. yearly.

Stratford. A messuage, ⅓ virgate land and 4a. meadow, held of the earl of Ferars, rendering 3s. yearly.
Pokesle. An assart containing 15a. land, held of John son of John de Couesgrave, rendering 1lb. pepper and ½d. yearly; 12a. land and 2a. meadow held of the Templars, rendering 1 mark yearly; 4a. land at (?) le Brede held of Walter de Fortho, rendering 18d. yearly; and perquisites of courts worth 2s. yearly.
Hugh his son, aged 28 and more, is his next heir.

257. Alan de Aldefeld.
Writ to the sheriff of York, 3 Dec. 6 Edw. I.
York. Extent, Wednesday before Christmas, 6 Edw. I.
Aldefeld. The manor (full extent given with names of tenants) including a pasture called Oxeleyes, Crakefal and Nicholfal, and lands in Stodlay and Longelay; and for the land at Longelay the lord of Aldefeld owes 3s. yearly to the heirs of Robert de Stiueton, and for the land of Aldefeld, Stodlay and Longelay, wardship, relief, (and) foreign service to the heirs of Sir Roger de Mubray, and suit of court at Kyrkeby.
William, son of Nigel de Aldefeld, aged 13 at Whitsunday last, is his next heir.
Writ (of certiorari), on the petition of Hugh de Beltoft and Egidia his wife for assignment of dower, showing that Nigel, son and heir of the said Alan, and with his consent, formerly dowered the said Egidia at the church door when he married he married her, but after his death the said Alan refused to assign her the said dower, 1 Feb. 6 Edw. 1.

Nigel son of Alan de Aldefeud, with the assent of his father, dowered Egidia his wife at the church door of Pennesthorn of a third part of all the lands &c. of the said Alan without charter, and the said Alan received the said Nigel and Egidia at his manor of Aldefeld, and found them all necessaries for sixteen years, where they had six sons and daughters; after that they removed to the said Egidia's manor of Azerlay, by the advice of the said Alan, and remained there until the death of the said Nigel, when the said Alan took William the son and heir of the said Nigel and married him to the daughter of Sir Elias de Knol, and took for that marriage 40 marks; and because the said Alan kept her children at his own cost, she was unwilling to press him and so left her dower in peace during his life, and he also dowered her of certain lands.
On the day he dowered her the said Alan had the following:—
Aldefeld. The manor, of the fee of Mubray.
Stodlay. 7 bovates land, of the fee of Moubray.
Horselay in the field of Aldefeld. 24a. and a water-mill, of the same fee.
Norton. 22 bovates land, 5a. meadow, and 3s. 6d. rent of cottars, of the fee of the abbey of St. Albans.
Rybbestan. 30s. rent of assize, of the fee of ...
Cundale. 15s. rent of assize from the prior of Newburgh (Novo Burg') for a pasture, of the fee of Mubray.
Rypon. 3s. rent of assize from Richard Huberd for a messuage, of the fee of the archbishop of York.
Longelay. 1 bovate.
And the said Alan gave to Jolland his son 7 bovates land in Stodlay and 1 bovate in Longelay; and to Nicholas his son the mill of Aldefeld, 24a. land in Horselay, and 30s. rent in Ribbestayn.
William son of Nigel de Aldefeld, aged 13 at Whitsuntide last, is his next heir.
