He also held a virgate of land in Walford, co. Hereford, service unknown.

YORK.	Inq. made at Hedon on Monday after the Annunication, 20 Edw. I.
	Sutton. A capital messuage, a fishery, 20 1/4 bovates of land, a windmill, and 49s. rent in Sutton, Conningeston, Gagensted, Hull and elsewhere, with the dower of Christiana late the wife of the said Saer, all held of Lady Isabel de Fortibus, countess of Albemarle, by knight’s service, which she holds as dower of the escheat of Albemarle; 2lb. pepper and 1lb. cummin rent; a plot of arable land and meadow called Braunceholm held of the heirs of William de Hylton, by homage and service; and a place called Ermytholm, held by homage and service, whereof a moiety is of the fee of the countess, and a moiety of the fee of the said heir of Hylton. Cristiana de Sutton his mother is dowered of a third of all the above. John his son, aged 21 on the octave of Holy Trinity, 19 Edw. I., is his next heir.

One ‘stal’ in the river Dee with a free boat (batello) rendering 3d. yearly at the exchequer of Chester; liberties within and without the city rendering 2d. yearly at the exchequer of Chester; a house held of Ralph son of Simon rendering 6d. yearly to Roger de Mouhaut; a house held of Ralph le Boteler, rendering to him 18d. yearly; and a house held of John Boydel, rendering to him a pair of white gloves yearly. 9.	RICHARD DE LA MORE.
	Writ, 6 May, 20 Edw. I.
GLOUCESTER.	Inq. Monday the feast of St. Augustine, 20 Edw. I.
	Oldelonde and Buttone. A capital messuage with other houses, gardens &c., a dovecote, a mill and half a water-mill, 100a. arable, 28a. meadow, 6a. pasture, 8 marks rent, whereof 4s. are of the fee of the earl of Gloucester, and pleas and perquisites of court, all held of the king in chief by service of half a knight’s fee; and 27a. arable and 5a. pasture, held of Thomas le Kniht of the fee of the earl of Gloucester. Bartholomew de la More, father of the said Richard, begat of his first wife a son named Nicholas, who had a lawful son named John now aged 30 years. The same Bartholomew begat of his second wife two sons, Bartholomew and the aforesaid Richard; and from the same Bartholomew, the brother, issued a lawful son Stephen, now aged 30, but the said Richard died without any heir of his body: which of the said John or Stephen is the next heir, the jury know not.
	Writ to the escheator to take the above lands into the king’s hand until it shall be settled in the king’s court which of the said Stephen and John is the next heir, 27 June, 20 Edw. I.
	Writ of scire facias to the escheator to warn the said John to be before the king on the morrow of Holy Trinity next, to shew cause why the lands &c. of the said Richard should not be delivered to the said Stephen as his next heir, 30 April, 21 Edw. I.

DERBY.	Inq. made at Derby on Saturday after St. Swithin, 20 Edw. I.
	Athlastre. 6 bovates and a plot of land, and 2s. rent at Mulnehay; whereof he held 2 bovates of Sir Thomas Thochet by homage, service of 16d., and suit of court, 2 bovates of William son of Richard de Atlastre by homage and service of 6d., and 2 bovates of the abbot of Derley by homage and service of 18d., the plot of land of William de Burley by service of 1d. yearly, and the rent of Milnehay of Robert de Stredeley by service of 2d. yearly. Philip his son, aged 20 at the feast of St. Michael next, is his next heir.
DERBY.	Inq. made at Asselbache on Wednesday after the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, 20 Edw. I.
	Brough (Burgum). A water-mill held of the king in chief by service of carrying a lanner falcon at the king’s court in the season at the king’s charges so long as he remains there, saving that he shall have his own horse when he comes, and if it die it shall be made good to him by the king. Hasselbach. A manor (extent given) including ‘loth’ of the mine (i.e. the thirteenth dish of lead), held of Sir Robert de Stredeley by homage and service of 1/4 knight’s fee. Wardelowe. 6s. from a freeholder, tenure unspecified. Heir as above.

11.	MARGERY DE MERLAY, LATE THE WIFE OF JOHN DE LEXINTON.
	Writ of plenius certiorari to Thomas de Normanvill escheator, on the complaint of Gilbert de Umframvill that whereas Richard de Umframvill, his grandfather, whose heir he is, granted the manor of Barwesford to Roger de Merleye in free marriage with Margery his daughter, to hold to them and the heirs of the body of the same Margery, with reversion to the said Richard or his heirs, now on the death of the said Margery without such heir the escheator has taken the said manor into the king’s hand and keeps it from the same Gilbert, 30 Jan. 20 Edw. I.
NORTHUMBERLAND.	Inq. made at Hedon on the Wall on Monday after St. Peter in Cathedra, 20 Edw. I.
	Barouesford. The said Richard granted the manor as abovesaid; the said Margery died without heir of her body; and the manor ought to revert to the said Gilbert as heir of Richard de Wmfrawill.
	Writ of certiorari super causa captionis concerning the lands which Margery de Merlay, lately deceased, held in dower of the inheritance of Richard de Sutton, son and heir of Robert de Sutton, deceased, who held of the king in chief, 4 February, 20 Edw. I.
[NOTTINGHAM] and DERBY.	Inq. Thursday before Lent, 20 Edw. I.
	Warsop. The manor (extent given), including stallage of the market and rents of 2 marks from the prior of St. Oswald for 20 bovates of land in Sulcolm’, and 5s. yearly from the abbot of Welbeck for the grange of Gledthorp, held of the king in chief, tenure unspecified. Pleseley. The park and 2 bovates of land in Schir[ebrok], held of the lord of Pleseley by service of 1d. yearly. Margery de Merlay was dowered of the above named manor together with the manor of Tokesforth for all the lands &c. which were of John de Lexinton her husband, ancestor of Richard de Sutton, of Cecily the wife of John de Bray, Agnes the wife of William de Sayntecroys, and John de Longevilers, a minor and in the king’s wardship, for which cause the escheator took the said manors into the king’s hand. The manors are of the inheritance of the said Richard, Cecily, Agnes and John.
NOTTINGHAM.	Inq. Saturday before Lent, 20 Edw. I.
	Tockisforth. The manor (extent given with names of free tenants), is held of the king in chief and is of the inheritance of Richard de Sutton, Cecily the wife of John le Bray, Agnes the wife of William de Seyntecrois, and John de Loungvilers, and Margery de Merlay was dowered thereof &c., as abovesaid.
	Writ of scire facias on the petition of Richard de Sutton, who claims as one of the heirs of Henry de Lexinton to have his share in the manors of Tokesford and Warsop, both of which were held in dower by Margery late the wife of John de Lexinton: reciting that on the suit of John de Bray, the manor of Tokesford, which Margery late the wife of John de Lexinton, brother of the said Henry, held in dower of his inheritance on the day of her death, was ordered to be divided equally between the said John de Bray and Cecily his wife daughter and one of the heirs of Robert de Markham, kinsman and one of the heirs of Henry de Lexinton, William de Sancta Cruce and Agnes his wife another daughter and heir of Robert de Markham, and John de Lungevilers, kinsman and third heir of the said Robert, the share of John de Lungevilers being by reason of his nonage, retained in the king’s hand; and commanding the escheator to warn the said parties to be before the king on Sunday in Mid-lent to receive their pourparties &c. and meanwhile to cause the said manors to be extended &c., 16 February, 20 Edw. I.
[NOTTINGHAM.]	Extent, Thursday the morrow of St. Gregory the Pope, 20 Edw. I.
	Toxford. The manor (full extent given with names of tenants), including meadows in the south park, Littil more, Eton, Lullewode and Karleton, and a little meadow called Ker, and among the free tenants, 6 bovates of land in Marcham and Milneton held by John de Riperes, 2 bovates of land in Bevercote held by William de Bevercote, and a toft in Toxford and a tenement in Marcham in Westmarcham, held by William de Sancta Cruce. Warsop. The manor (extent given), including 26s. 8d. rendered by the prior of St. Oswald for 6 bovates of land in Solweholm, 5s. yearly by the abbot of Wellebek for the grange of Gledthorp, the park of Plessley and 2 bovates of land in Shirebrok which are held of the lord of Pleseley by service of 1d., and stallage of the forest. 	Calestone and Cameresford. A messuage and 2 carucates of land, held at fee farm by socage of the king in chief, rendering 58s. 4d. yearly; and a park and pasture, held of the treasurer of Salisbury by knight’s service rendering to him 20s. yearly. Lyttlecote [alias Litlecote]. A knight’s fee held of Robert de London in chief by knight’s service. Childhamton. A hide of land held of the abbess of Wylton in chief by knight’s service. Little Derneford [alias Durnesford]. A carucate of land held of the earl of Lincoln by knight’s service. Ebbelesburne Wake. 100s. rent held of Ingram Beneger by knight’s service. Roger his son, aged a year and a quarter, is his next heir.
[SOUTHAMPTON.]	Inq. made at Aundevere on Saturday after St. Gregory, 20 Edw. I.
	Knight’s Enham. 10l. yearly rent payable by the hands of the bishop of Bath who holds the manor in fee. The town is held of the heirs of Matthew de Columbariis, who hold the same of the king in chief. The advowson of the church belongs to the heirs of the said Roger. Heir as above.
	Writ of certiorari as to whether the said lands &c. held of the king in Caleston and Camerford are held by knight’s service, whereby the wardship pertains to the king, or in socage whereby they ought to pertain to the said Roger’s heir, 24 February, 20 Edw. I.
WILTS.	Inq. Tuesday the feast of St. Edward the King and Martyr, 20 Edw. I.
	Calston and Quemerford. A messuage and 2 carucates of land, were held at fee farm by socage of the king in chief, rendering 58s. 4d. yearly at the king’s exchequer. He held nothing else of the king in chief.

SOUTHAMPTON.	Extent, Friday before St. Dunstan, 20 Edw. I.
	Suthwargheborgh alias Suthwargheburn. The manor (extent given) held of the king in chief by service of a sore sparrowhawk, or 2s. yearly. Stampneshou within the liberty of Portem[uth], held of the king in chief. Heir as above, aged 17.
SOUTHAMPTON.	Extent, Thursday after St. John ante Portam Latinam, 20 Edw. I.
	Stampneshou. The manor (extent given) held of the king in chief in the liberty of Portesm[uth] by service of rendering a sore sparrowhawk yearly in the king’s exchequer. By charter of King Henry III. the bailiffs of Portesm[uth] are allowed 35s. 4d. yearly of their farm of 20l. at the exchequer for the land of Stampneshou. Heir as above, aged 17.

[SOUTHAMPTON.]	Inq. Saturday the eve of St. Thomas the Apostle, 21 Edw. I.
	Helesye alias Hulesye. 20a. land in the manor, held of the king in chief by service of suit of court at the castle of Porcestre, and by service of finding a man at the said castle for eight days in time of war with ‘parpoynt’, steel cap and lance, and the rent is worth 5s. 9 1/2d. yearly; 20a. land with a dovecot &c. in the manor, held of the lady of Warblinton by service of suit at the court of Middlington every three weeks, and 6s. rent; and 20a. arable held of Richard de Porteseye by service of 1lb. pepper and a rose yearly rent. Geoffrey de Insula, his brother, is his next heir and of full age.

	Esnebrugge. The town (extent given), including a rent of a pair of iron spurs, held of the king with his other lands by serjeanty of keeping the king’s forests in co. Salop; and he used to receive 42s. yearly from the lady of Boulewas. Roger son of John, his brother, aged 26 and more, is his next heir.
HEREFORD.	Inq. taken at Leominster on Wednesday before St. Mark, 20 Edw. I.
	Brumfeld. The manor (extent given) held of the king in chief by grand serjeanty by service of being chief forester in co. Salop. Heir as above, aged 30 and more.

[HEREFORD.]	Inq. made at Mawerdyn on Thursday after St. Luke, 20 Edw. I.
	Amberley. A messuage, 140a. arable, 18a. meadow, 6a. pasture and 2a. wood, held in dower of the inheritance of the said Nicholas of the heirs of Peter de Stanton by service of 20s. yearly. Deweschirche. A messuage and croft, similarly held of the prior of Culpek by service of 1/2lb. cummin. Wormeton. A carucate of land and 6a. meadow, similarly held of Hugh de Kynardesley by service of a pair of gloves, price 1d. Hunfreyeston. 39s. 2d. rent of assize similarly held of the king in chief by service of 5s. yearly. Birches. 13s. 4d. rent of assize similarly held of Hugh de Kynardesley by service of a pair of gloves. Deweswele. 3s. rent of assize similarly held of the same by the above service. The pleas &c. of Hunfreyeston, Birches and Deweswelle are worth 2s 6d. yearly. She held nothing except as dower. The said Nicholas had a son and heir Nicholas who survived his father and died without heir of himself, leaving four sisters and heirs, Alice the eldest, Cecily, Christiana and Denise. Christiana and Denise, being of full age and sui juris, quitclaimed to the said Alice in the king’s court before the justices of the bench all their right in the lands &c. of Nicholas their brother, and in those which the said Joan held as dower, so that the said Alice, aged 36 years and more, the wife of Walter de Frene, and Richard Danyel, aged 19 at the feast of St. John the Baptist last, son of the said Cecily deceased, are next heirs of the said Nicholas, but whether three parts ought to remain to the said Alice and the fourth to the said Richard, the jury know not. Petition of Walter de Frene and Alice his wife for livery of three parts of the above said lands &c., the said Alice having purchased the pourparties of her sisters Cristiana and Denise; which lands are in the king’s hand on account of the nonage of Richard Danyel. 	Botilbrigge. He held nothing of the king in chief, except by the mesne of Robert Gymis, who held of the king in chief, and the said John paid him a sore sparrowhawk or 2s. yearly. Overton and Botilbrigge. 105s. rent of assize, 80a. arable, 16a. meadow, and pasture; and he had a capital messuage and garden. He also held the manor of Drayton, co. Northampton of the king in chief. Simon his son, aged 10, is his next heir.
NORTHAMPTON.	Inq. Monday after St. Valentine, 20 Edw. I.
	Drayton. The manor (extent given), including a fishpond and dovecot held of the king in chief by service of 1/2 knight’s fee and rendering to the king yearly 13s. 4d. in the manor of Geytinton, and doing suit of court there. Margaret de Ryperiis, countess of Devon, held the manor in dower by the endowment of Robert Agulon, who held the same of the king in chief by service of a dish (ferculi) called ‘maupygernon’ on the day of the king’s coronation. Isabel, daughter of Robert Agulon, aged 30, whom Sir Hugh Bardolf married, is next heir of the said Robert.
