And the jury well know John son of Arnald de Percy, aged 30, to be the next and lawful heir of William de Vescy.
With a memorandum as follows:—
This is a transcript of an inquisition taken before the escheator which was returned into the chancery without a writ.
Petition to the king and [council by John de Percy ?] to have the inheritance [of William de] Vescy of Kildare. (French, undated fragment.)
Petition of Thomas Wake to the king for delivery to him of the manor of Langeton, part of Melton, co. York, which was taken into the king’s hand after the death of William de Vesci, and which ought now to revert to the said Thomas as heir of Robert de Stutevile, who gave it to Eustace de Vesci and to Bourge his daughter in free marriage and to the heirs of their bodies, because William de Vesci heir of the said Eustace died without heir. (French, undated.)
Petition of Roger de Mortimer of Wyggemor to the king and council for delivery to him of the manor of Wyntringham, co. York, now in the king’s hand, as his escheat by reason of the death without heir of William de Vescy of Kyldare, who held it of him. (French, undated.)
Writ of amotus de plenius certiorari as to whether or not Gilbert de Aton, Robert de Hilton, and William de Chauncy are heirs of William de Vescy the elder as they assert, 24 Feb. 8 Edw. II.
YORK. Inq. 2 June, 8 Edw. II.
Gilbert de Aton is next heir of William de Vescy the elder, for, after the said William’s death without heir of himself, the right of his tenements resorted to one Warin de Vescy as kinsman and heir of his brother, one Eustace, grandfather of the said William the elder on the side of William his father, and from the said Warin the right descended to Margery his daughter and heir, and from her to William her son and heir, and from him to Gilbert his son and heir, and from him, who died without heir of himself, to one William his brother and heir, and from him to the said Gilbert de Aton his son and heir, who is of full age.
Writ of certiorari on the complaint of John Barde and Walter de Percehaie, executors of the will of William de Vescy of Kildare, that whereas he left two houses in the city of Lincoln to be sold, and the money to be received to be distributed for his soul amongst his poor and faithful servants, the escheator detains the same houses in the king’s hand, 2 May, 8 Edw. II.
LINCOLN. Inq. taken in the hall of pleas, Lincoln, on Wednesday in Whitsun week, 8 Edw. II.
The said William bequeathed the said messuages as abovesaid, and they are bequeathable (legabilia). There was no heir of the said William to be warned, because he was a bastard, and died without heir of himself.
Writ de melius inquirendo to enquire of whose gift the said William held his lands &c., and to whom they ought to revert, 11 June, 8 Edw. II.
LINCOLN. Inq. Tuesday the feast of St. Oswald, 9 Edw. II.
William de Vescy of Kildare held all his lands in co. Lincoln of the gift of his father, to him and the heirs of his body, and because he died without such heir all the lands which he thus held in fee tail ought to revert to Gilbert de Aton, as next heir of William de Vescy the father; for one William de Vescy had two sons Eustace the elder, and Warin, and from Eustace issued William, and from him John and William, who both died without heir of themselves, and the right of inheritance resorted to the said Warin, and from him descended to Marjory his daughter &c. (as above), and to Gilbert de Aton, who is 26 and more.
Writ de melius inquirendo to enquire whether the said William held the manor of Cathorp &c. of the king, or not, and who is his next heir, 24 June, 8 Edw. II.
LINCOLN. Inq. Tuesday the feast of St. Oswald, 9 Edw. II.
Caithorp. The manor with its appurtenances in Friston, Normanton, Sudbrok and Wyleghby (full extents given) including meadow in places called Wedenesse and Esthenges, and plots of pasture called Le Haye and Brademere, was held by the said William of the king in chief by service of 1 knight’s fee, of the gift and enfeoffment of William de Vescy his father, so that if the said William of Kildare should die without heir of himself the manor should remain to the right heirs of the said William the elder.
He was a bastard and died without heir of his body.
Writ of plenius certiorari whether or not William de Karliolo is the right heir of William de Vescy as he asserts, 1 Sept. 9 Edw. II.
Mandate from the escheator to the sub-escheator in Norfolk to make inquisition accordingly, reciting the above writ.
NORFOLK. Inq. 20 Oct. 9 Edw. II.
William de Karliolo is the next heir of William de Vescy, and not Gilbert de Aton nor John de Percy nor any other. For one William de Vescy the stock (stipes), ancestor of the said William lately deceased, had a son Eustace and a daughter Maud, and through Eustace the right of his inheritance descended to William his son, to John his son, and to William de Vescy, brother of the said John, who lately died without heir of his body; where-upon the right of inheritance reverted to the said Maud, sister of the said Eustace, who was married to Adam de Karliolo, from whom it descended to Eudo de Karliolo her son, to William his son, to William, the second, his son, and to William de Karliolo, the third, his son and heir who now claims it. The jury being demanded how they know this so openly, seeing that the late William de Vescy had no lands &c. in Norfolk, say they know it because William de Vescy, the stock, gave the manor of Saxlingham, co. Norfolk, in free marriage to the abovesaid Adam de Karliolo with Maud his daughter, to be held of himself and his heirs by service of 1/2 knight’s fee, and also certain lands and tenements in Saxlyngham to be similarly held by service of 3/4 knight’s fee, which Simon de Goseford and Peter de Narford now hold of the said William de Karliolo. This inquisition was delivered into the chancery at Lincoln, 12 Feb. 9 Edw. II.
Endorsed. Returned at the suit of William de Karl[iolo].
LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Haltokston in the sheriff’s turn, on Saturday after St. Martin, 9 Edw. II.
William de Carliolo is not the next heir of William de Vescy the elder, but Gilbert de Aton and no other, of whom a full pedigree is given, as above.
Memorandum by the escheator. William de Karliolo has been warned to be in the King’s chancery on the quinzaine of St. Martin.
Writ to the escheator to make the above inquisitions without delay and have them in the chancery on the quinzaine of St. Martin next, the day given to the said Gilbert de Aton and John de Percy, and to give notice to the said William de Karliolo to be there also, 23 Oct. 9 Edw. II.
Writ of scire facias to the escheator, to warn Robert de Hilton, John de Percy, and William de Chauncy to be before the king in his next parliament at Lincoln on the quinzaine of St. Hilary next, the day given to Gilbert de Aton and William de Karliolo, each of whom claims to be next heir to William de Vescy the elder, 5 Dec. 9 Edw. II.
Writ of scire facias to the escheator, to warn Robert de Hilton, William de Karliolo, John de Percy and William de Chauncy to be in the chancery on the octave of St. Hilary next, to show cause why the manor of Wintringham and certain lands in Dukelesby, which William de Vescy of Kildare held in fee tail, should not be delivered to Gilbert de Aton as next heir of William de Vescy the elder, 16 Dec. 10 Edw. II.
Similar writ concerning the manor of Catthorp and certain lands &c. in Dukelesby, 17 Dec. 10 Edw. II.
Writ to the escheator to deliver to Gilbert de Aton, kinsman and heir of William de Vescy of Kildare, deceased, the manor of Malton which is of that inheritance, and which the escheator has detained, as is said, with the profits from 7 Nov. last, when the king took his homage, 6 June, 11 Edw. II.
Return by the escheator. On Saturday after SS. Peter and Paul he came to Meauton with a great assembly of people to deliver seisin of the manor to the said Gilbert, but he could not have entry, for Robert son of Richard Cursy professing to be keeper of the manor for Lady Joan de Comyn held it with force and arms. (French, undated.)
C. Edw. II. File 40. (1.)

Gilbert de Aton is next heir of the said William, and of full age.

Heir as above, aged 30.
NORTHAMPTON. Inq. 20 Jan. 8 Edw. II.
Faxton. Two parts of the manor (full extent given), held in demesne as of fee, which manor is held of John de Darntayne by service of 2 knights’ fees.
Her next heir is Robert, son of Adam de Welle deceased, who is in the king’s wardship, aged 19 on the day of the Circumcision, which Adam was her son and heir. And the said Isabel, long before her death, granted by indenture to Cecily and Aline de Welle her daughters, and the heirs of their bodies or of the survivor, for life, 20l. of yearly rent issuing from two parts of the same manor.
