SOMERSET. Inq. 13 June, 4 Edward III.
Dulvertone. Two parts of the manor (extent given), held for her life, of the grant of King Edward I; which two parts Thomas de Pyn and Hawis his wife held in fee of Emery Paunsefout, as of the honour of Kyrkehowel in Wales, by service of two parts of half a knight’s fee, and granted to the said king in fee, for a sum of money in which the said Thomas was bound to the same king; who re-granted the said two parts to the said Thomas and Hawis, for their lives, with reversion to the said king and his heirs for ever.
The king is her next heir of the said two parts.
Dulverton. A third part of the manor (extent given), held of Emery Paunsefout as of the honour of Kirkehowel in Wales, by service of a third part of half a knight’s fee.
Nicholas de Bolevyle, aged 30 years and more, is her next heir of the said third part.

HERTFORD. Inq. 16 April, 4 Edward III.
Hicche. The manor held jointly with Margaret his wife, now living, by the grant of King Edward II, to them and the heirs male of their bodies, in chief, by service of a knight’s fee and a half; and the sheriff receives yearly from the said manor 40s. for the aid of the county, and 40s. from the view of frankpledge.
Madecroft. The manor held jointly by the said Robert and Margaret to them and the heirs of the said Robert, by the enfeoffment of Gerard de Eyllesford, of Thomas de Furnival of Scheffeld, by service of 1d. yearly and 10s. for sheriff’s aid.
Wakele. The manor similarly held of William son of Ralph by service of 15s. yearly.
Aspedene and Codrethe. Lands and rent similarly held of the countess of Penebrok, as of the castle of Anesty by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee.
Aldenham. Two messuages and a carucate and a half of land held jointly by the said Robert and Margaret, viz.—one messuage and a carucate of land held of the heir of Henry atte Nassche by service of a rose yearly, and the other messuage and half carucate of land held of the heir of John de Sancto Amando by service of a clove gillyflower yearly.
Idelestre. Two messuages, lands and wood, held jointly by the said Robert and Margaret to them and the heirs of the said Robert, of the kitchener (coquinarius) of St. Albans, by service of 24s. 5d., and 20d. to the abbot of St. Albans.
Edward, son of the said Robert and Margaret, aged 21 years and more, is their next heir in the form above written.
SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. 21 April, 4 Edward III.
Shaldene. The manor (extent given), including a view of frankpledge held yearly by Queen Isabella’s bailiffs of Odyham, held jointly with Margaret his wife to them and the heirs of their bodies, of the enfeoffment of Nicholas de Bosco, by fine levied in the king’s court, of Henry, earl of Lancaster, as of his manor of Hurtligh Mauduyt, by service of half a knight’s fee.
Shirefelde. A messuage and lands held jointly with Margaret his wife, of John de Warblyngton, by service of 3s. 2d. yearly.
The said Margaret survives, seised of the aforesaid lands and tenements.

BEDFORD [AND HERTFORD]. Inq. 17 April, 4 Edward III.
Luyton. A sixth part of the manor, except the capital messuage, held jointly with Margaret his wife to them and the heirs of the said Robert, of the enfeoffment of John Power, of the king in chief, by service of a sixth part of half a knight’s fee.
Luyton. Seven cottages, 14a. land and a toft, held jointly with the said Margaret of Hugh ate Spitele, Robert Bischop, and Hugh de Northwode, by service of 2s. yearly; a messuage, lands, a water-mill, wood, and rents held of Christina late the wife of John de Moutroun, the younger, by service of 77s. 2 1/2d. yearly; and 43 1/2a. land, held by service of 2s. 7d., and to the lord of the prebend of Cadyndon 2s. 6d., and to John Aignel 2s. 6d. for the same.

Bergholte. A capital messuage, lands, and rent (extent given), held, of the inheritance of Walter son of the said Thomas, and kinsman and heir of Joan de Fenne, on account of the upbringing of the said heir as his mother, to whom, according to the custom of socage tenure, the upbringing belonged, of the king, in free socage, by service of paying 20s. yearly of fee-farm, called blanchfarm, at the king’s exchequer; lands (extent given), held by reason of the aforesaid upbringing, of Nicholas Fraunceys, knight, in free socage, rendering 8s. yearly to the said Nicholas at his manor of Bergholte; and 6a. of several pasture, held in manner aforesaid, of the prioress of Campeseye, by service of 2s. yearly.
Stratford. Lands (extent given), held for her life, of the grant of Joan de Fenne, of the inheritance of the said Walter, of William de Holebroke, by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee, and by service of rendering to the said William a pair of gilt spurs yearly.
Aston. 24a. land, held of the inheritance of the said Walter for her life, of the grant of the said Joan, of Robert de Peytone, knight, and other divers lords, by divers services unknown at present.
Walter, son of the said Thomas, aged 16 years and more, is her next heir.

Bathelle. A moiety of the manor (extent given), held by the courtesy of England, of the inheritance of the aforesaid Lucy, of Queen Isabella, as of the manor of Fakenham, by service of paying 100s. yearly at the said manor, and it is held for 40 years by the grant of King Edward II.
Gatele. The manor (extent given), held by the courtesy of England, of the inheritance of the aforesaid Lucy, of Queen Isabella as of the manor of Haule, by service of two knights’ fees, and rendering 20s. yearly for the ward of the castle of Dover.
Lucy daughter of Roger atte Asshe, whom Robert son of Robert Banyard married by the king’s licence, aged 30 years, is next heir of all the aforesaid lands and tenements.

291. JOHN SEWARD, SUWARD or SIWARD.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. 28 May, 4 Edward III.
Chelveston. The manor (extent given), including meadow land on the bank of the Nene, held long before his death, of the king in chief, as parcel of the manor of Higham Ferers which is held of the king in chief, by knight’s service; and the said John granted the said manor of Chelveston to Thomas, earl of Lancaster, and his heirs, who re-granted it to the said John for his life, rendering a rose yearly; afterwards the said earl granted the reversion thereof to Robert de Holand and his heirs, to whom the said John attorned, by his fealty, during the said earl’s life.
Robert son and heir of Robert de Holand, to whom the said manor descended after the said John’s death, by virtue of the aforesaid grant, is a minor and in the king’s wardship, being 17 years of age and more. The said John has no heir within the realm of England.

292. JOHN DE SHELVYNGGE.

KENT. Inq. Saturday after the Octave of the Purification, 4 Edward III. (defaced.)
Weveringge. 20s. yearly rent, held, together with Benedicta his wife to them and to the heirs of the said Benedicta, of the king in chief, together with 20s. rent held by the said John and Benedicta as of the right and inheritance of the said Benedicta, by service of finding for the king in his army of Wales a horse with a sack and pin (broch’) for carrying the king’s food, price 5s. 4d.
The said John held no other lands or tenements in the county on the day he died, because in 18 Edward II, he granted to Master John de Walemere and John de Strode all his lands and tenements in the said county, except the rent of Weveringe, for their lives, which John de Strode in 1 Edward III, released all his right in the same to the said John de Walemere, viz.—the manor of Bokton Munchensy, which is of the right and inheritance of the said Benedicta, and is held of the earl of Kent as of the fee of Munchensy by knight’s service; certain lands and tenements in Bishopsbourn (Bourne Archiepiscopi), which are of the said inheritance, and are held of the archbishop of Canterbury and the abbot of St. Augustine’s, Canterbury, by service of 34s. yearly rent; certain lands and tenements in Wodenesbergh which Thomas de Shelvyngg, father of the said John, gave to the said John and Benedicta and to the said John’s heirs 24 years ago, and which are held of the king, as of the honour of Creuker, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee, and doing suit at the king’s hundred of Estry every three weeks, and rendering yearly, viz.—every 24 weeks, 3s. 4d. for the ward of the castle of Dover; and certain lands and tenements in Forde by Reculvre, which the said John acquired to himself and his heirs, and which are held of the archbishop of Canterbury and the abbot of St. Augustine’s, Canterbury, and other lords, by service of 43s. 4 1/2d.

Knolton. The manor (extent given), held of the king, as of the manor of Elham, which is in the king’s hand by the forfeiture of Henry de Leybourn, by service of two knights’ fees and suit of court there every three weeks. The said manor of Elham is in the hands of Bartholomew de Burghersh by the king’s demise.
Estry. Lands, wood, and rents (extent given), of gavelkind, held of William de Tytindenne by service of a rose at Midsummer.
Thomas son of Simon Perot, aged 2 1/2 years at the feast of St. Augustine (Augusti) last, is his next heir.
BUCKINGHAM. Inq. Saturday after St. Matthew, 4 Edward III.
Chilwaldesbury. A messuage, three crofts and two little groves, held of Ralph de Wedon by service of 8s. 7 1/2d. yearly; a moiety of two fields containing 20a. held of the said Ralph by service of 5s. yearly; the other moiety of the said two fields containing 20a., a croft called Panycroft containing 8a., and a grove called Boleygrave, held of Ralph Basset by service of 11s. 4d.; the site of a messuage held of the prior of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem by service of 6d.; and a tenement called Coldelowe, containing 30a., held of the heir of James de Audele, a minor and in the king’s wardship, by service of 8s. 6d. and paying 1d. to Matthew la Vache, and to the lord of Montacute 40d. called ‘serjauntie.’

296. ROBERT SON OF JOHN DE THORP.

Return by the escheator that it has been found among the memoranda of the times of his predecessors, escheators citra Trentam, that both Robert de Thorp, of whom mention is made in the following inquisitions, and John de Thorp, his father, did homage to the king, and it has not been found that they held anything of the king except the manor of Combes, of which the escheator sends an inquisition indented.

Combes. A moiety of the manor (extent given), held of the king in chief, rendering yearly at the king’s exchequer 11l. 3s. 4d. of fee farm, and 15s. of the said yearly rent (as) scutage.

Horram. A messuage and 32a. land, held of the bishop of Norwich as of his manor of Hoxne, by service of 33s. 10 1/2d. yearly; lands (extent given), held of Isabella, queen of England, of her manor of Eye by a fee farm of 100s. yearly; lands and wood (extent given), held of Roger de Huntyngfeld of his manor of Horham, and of Peter Gernegan by service of 9s. 2d. yearly, and rendering at the end of every 30 weeks 4 1/2d. yearly for the ward of the castle of Eye; 28a. land, held of the said Roger de Huntingfeld by service of 15d. for the ward of the said castle, at the end of every 30 weeks; meadow, pasture, and wood, held of the said Roger by the aforesaid ward; and there are there rents, works, &c.
Fresingfeld. 1a. 1r. land and the advowson of a moiety of the church, held of the abbot of St. Edmund’s in free socage by fealty.
Helmyngham manor. 7l. 15s. yearly farm, to be received from Ralph de Bokkyngge, for the said manor demised to him for his life by John de Thorp, father of the said Robert, which manor after the said Ralph’s decease, ought to revert to the said Robert’s heirs; the manor is held of the earl of Norfolk, marshal of England, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.

Little Massingham. The manor (extent given), held of John Claveringge by service of a knight’s fee.
Congham. A capital messuage and 41a. land; whereof 31a. held of John de Congham by service of 19d. yearly, and 10a. held of William Mattild by service of 10d. yearly, and (it is?) socage.
North Creek. A moiety of the manor (extent given), held of the earl Marshal as of his manor of Fornesete, by service of a knight’s fee and a quarter.

Writ of certiorari to the treasurer &c. of the exchequer to examine the books of Domesday and of fees, and other memoranda of the exchequer, and certify whether the manor of Combes or Cambes, co. Suffolk, is held of the king or not, and if so, in what manner, 2 May, 4 Edward III.

In the book of Domesday under the title of ‘Lands of Robert count of Mortain in Suffolk’ it is thus found:—
Stou h(undred). Cambas, held by Ulnoth a freeman under King Edward &c.
In a book extracted from divers inquisitions taken ‘ex officio’ in the time of King Henry, the king’s great-grandfather, in Norfolk and Suffolk, under the title of socage, it is thus found:—
Cambas, held by Bartholomew de Crek at fee farm of the king, rendering 22l. half a mark, and 30s. yearly for scutage.
Cambes, held by Robert de Crek of the king at fee farm, rendering the farm at the exchequer, and he used to hold of Rodland Avenel by 22l. half a mark, and 25s. scutage, and nothing has been alienated.
Also in the same book under the title of escheats, thus:—
Cambes. 22l. half a mark from the manor, is the king’s escheat from Ralph Avenel the Norman, of whom Bartholomew de Crek held the manor by that service. (fn. 1)
In the great roll of 10 John, in Norfolk, thus:—
Cambe. Robert de Crek renders account of 11l. 3s. 4d. of farm, which he rendered to Rodland Avenel for half the 6th year, and 22l. 6s. 8d. for the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th years.
And in the great roll of 11 John, thus:—
Camb’. Robert de Crek renders account of 22l. 6s. 8d. for this year, and 7l. 10s. for yearly scutage for 5 years past, and 30s. for this year.
From 12 John to 4 Henry III, the said 22l. half a mark, and 30s. yearly scutage, are exacted under the name of Robert de Creke; from 5 Henry III to 13 Edward I, under that of Bartholomew de Creke; from 14 to 16 Edward I, under that of John son and heir of the said Bartholomew; from 17 Edward I, to 1 Edward II, under the names of Roger son of Peter and Sarra his wife; from 2 to 14 Edward II, one moiety of the said sums is required from John de Thorpe, kinsman and heir of Margaret, one of the paternal aunts and heirs of the said Sarra, and the other moiety from Edmund de Pagenham and Rose his wife, one of the kinswomen and heirs of Isabel, another of the paternal aunts and heirs of the said Sarra; from 15 Edward II, to the present time, one moiety of the said sums is exacted from the said John de Thorpe, kinsman and heir of the said Margaret, one of the heirs of the said Sarra, who is heir of John de Creke and late the wife of the said Roger son of Peter, and from the heirs of the said John, and the other moiety from Robert de Ufforde and Cicely his wife, and from the heirs of the said Cicely, as is contained in the yearly rolls.
Nothing is found in the book of fees or memoranda of the exchequer concerning the said manor.

Writ to the escheator to cause to be delivered in dower to Beatrice late the wife of the said John, the following lands &c. which the king has assigned to her, viz.—The manor of Little Massingham, co. Norfolk, a moiety of the manor of Northcreek, a third part of lands &c. in Wrenyngham, a third part of lands &c. in Bonewelle, a third part of lands &c. in Tyvetteshale, and a third part of lands &c. in Congham, all in co. Norfolk; a third part of lands in Horham and Fresyngfeld, and a third part of a moiety of the manor of Combes, co. Suffolk; and 46s. 9 1/4d. rent from certain tenants of the manor of Asshewellesthorp, and 6l. 10s. 2 1/4d. rent from certain tenants of the manor of Fundenhale, co. Norfolk; to hold in dower of the lands &c. of the said Robert, 15 July, 4 Edward III.
Letters Patent from the king, accepting a grant made by Thomas Bardolf, deceased, to Ralph Sefoul for his good service, of 10l., a robe, and a saddle, to be received yearly from the manor of Rungeton, co. Norfolk, for life, which manor is in the king’s hand during the minority of John son and heir of the said Thomas, and granting that the said Ralph should have the same during the said heir’s minority, 18 Sept. 4 Edward III.
Memorandum. That two parts of a moiety of the manor of Combes, which by reason of minority &c. are in the king’s hand, besides the dower assigned, are worth 10l. 5s. 8 1/2d., and it seems reasonable for the king to assign them to Ralph Sefoul for the 10l. &c. which Sir Thomas Bardolf granted him, as abovesaid, and which the king has commanded to be satisfied to him, but which is not yet done as he says, to hold &c. until the lawful age of the said Thomas’s heir; after which the said two parts shall revert to the king, and the said Ralph to receive the 10l. &c. from the manor of Rungeton.
Writ of certiorari to the treasurer &c. of the exchequer to examine &c. (as aforesaid) and certify what relief the said John and his ancestors have been accustomed to pay for the manor of Combes or Cambes.

The rolls and memoranda of the exchequer having been searched, it was found that Roger son of Osbert who married Sarra, sister and heir of John de Creke who held of the king in chief, was charged in the 21st year of King Edward I, with 22l. 6s. 8d. of relief for the above manor, viz.—so much as Robert de Creke used to render to the king’s progenitors yearly of the farm of Cambe, and 30s. for his relief of the yearly scutage of the same manor. It was also found that John de Thorpe, kinsman and heir of Margaret one of the paternal aunts and heirs of Sarra late the wife of Roger son of Peter son of Osbert, in the 3rd year of King Edward II, was similarly charged for his relief for a moiety of the above manor, which the said Roger held at his death of the king, of the inheritance of the said Sarra, at farm and by yearly scutage in form aforesaid.
