	2 March, 1510.—Wrote last on 12 Jan. The Emperor's ambassadors subsequently departed re infecta, and the Emperor has gone to the Diet. Afterwards came Badoer's letters, of 31 Jan., retained till 4 Feb. Although Winchester expressed surprise that they had not answered the King's proposal, they are sure that theirs of 6 Jan. will have satisfied both him and all the Councillors, and that he will have continued what he began—by influencing the Emperor and Diet in their favour, as he has influenced the Pope. Badoer shall, both to the King and him, excuse delay as due to distance, interception of letters, &c., and express the Signory's thanks that by the work of the King and his ambassador the Pope, on 24 Feb., gave them his benediction. They pray the King to continue the settlement of their matters with the Emperor and induce the latter to take up the enterprise of driving the French out of Italy; and especially to hasten the league between him and them, which, as he himself has wisely said, brooks no delay, and get Spain to join it. Although, contrary to what the French ambassador has falsely said, they have a strong army, they are now increasing it and adding a powerful armada, and they will do more if they meet with allies.
	He shall also tell the King that, on 16 Jan., they elected another ambassador to him, viz. Francesco Capello, knight, and immediately asked the Emperor's ambassadors at Feltre to obtain the Emperor's safeconduct for him; but they have as yet no answer, and therefore they pray the King to obtain such safeconduct, both from the Emperor and Madame Margaret. He shall further tell the King that the bp. of York informed their ambassadors of his conference with the Pope in presence of the Spanish ambassador, assuring them there was good understanding between England, Scotland and Venice, and his King would make no league without Venice, and exhorting his Holiness to make a league including the Signory. Finally, he shall thank Winchester for his letters to the Pope in their favour.
	Amendments were made to insert paragraphs (given) touching their offers to the Emperor and readiness to send ambassadors to the Diet.

	1 March, 1510.—Perceive by their letters of 23rd ult. that the bp. of York, besides the letter written in their favour by his King to the Pope, mentioned his belief that there would be a triple understanding or league made between England, Scotland and Venice. The ambassadors shall give him the Signory's thanks and show that nothing could be more desirable than such an understanding.
	2 March, 1510.—Another letter directing them to arrange with the Bp. of York, jointly, to urge upon the Pope the advantages of the above league for repressing the pride of France.

	[Note of letters read 1 April, 1510.]
	From Andrea Badoer, from London, 23 Feb., detained till 4 March.—French ambassadors have come, first the Abbot of Fachan (Fécamp), afterwards Monsignor de Cerisola and lastly the bailly of Miens (Amiens) with eight carts containing a great present of money. The King told Badoer that he expected a Spanish ambassador and had been wronged by the Emperor's capitulating with Spain that Duke Charles, his brother-in-law, should not inherit in Spain until 24 years of age; also that he suspected the said Spanish ambassador, who remained in Paris, had been bribed by the King of France, as usual; he would make no agreement save to the advantage of Venice. The King awaits answer from France and Spain about the Flanders galleys. Fresh news, of 12 Feb., from the French Court that the King will not come into Italy this year but stay on these frontiers. Repeats his request for money.

	1. "The copy of Edward Greville's bill that he sent to Richard Emson the 2d day of March, anno primo regis Henrici octavi, touching Thomas Lucy, and the answer thereupon made." Touching the manors of Sesoncote and Gouldicote in co. G[loucester], which Lucy alleges Empson gave him in marriage with his daughter. Empson denies his title. Subscribed as sent "to Edward Grevile, wordly, the 6th day of March the year abovesaid."

	3. Sir Richard Empson to [Thomas] Lucy. Stating that John Greville leased him the manor of Sesoncote after the death of Sir Thomas Cokesey and the marriage of Sir Edward Stanley to Lady Cokesey, who sued Greville for her dower and obtained from him this manor. Empson subsequently made over to Lucy on his marriage his own interest in the lease.

	4. Sir Richard Empson to [Edward] Greville. Replies, at great length, to a letter touching the writer's "occupation in the manor" of Sesoncotes, leased to him by Greville's father. That the church is ruinous and used by the writer's cattle is not his fault, as Greville is at liberty to repair it; and the keepers are "very beastly if they suffer it to be so, for it is the place they say their devotions in." No one uses it but the writer's servants, as there are "no mo parisshens." Mr. Wrenne, the King's chaplain, is incumbent.

9 March. Adv. MS. 72.	389. CHARLES DUKE OF GUELDRES to JAMES IV.
	James's letters and the bearers of them were both most acceptable, Has accepted the treaty made between Maximilian and the French King at Cambray, in which Lewis caused him to be included. Has yielded to the pressure of the times, though he thinks his country should first have been restored to him. Arbiters, however, are appointed touching the rights of Gueldres, viz. the Emperor and England for the Prince of Spain, and the French and Scotch Kings for Gueldres. Sends copy of the articles of the peace. Understanding from James's letters that he is to meet the King of England, begs he will commend the cause of Gueldres to him so that he may recover the patrimony of which he has been unjustly stripped. 	Draft of a treaty between the Emperor, the Archduke Prince of Spain and the Archduchess, on the one side, and Charles of Gueldres on the other; proposing a marriage between the said Charles and Isabel, second daughter of the late King [Philip] of Castile; to be consummated when she is of suitable age.

VII., between Richard [Fox], bp. of Winchester, and the Earl, touching the manors of Nafferton, Hundmanby, &c., in co. York; of which indenture both parts were in the custody of Edmund Dudley. 	Begs favour for Thomas Ducmanton, of Styde, who has wedded a daughter of the writer's wife's aunt and is "patent man" of Rannysdale, to have his patent allowed. Desires Mr. Chancellor to know that John Agard spoke with the King's solicitor, at Derby, on the assize day, and within two days after attached Robert Fitzherbert's land of Tyssyngton, whose son went about in the writer's name "to ask the King's duty." Now that my lord Steward and Mr. Chancellor are agreed, trusts that every man may occupy his office in peace, and that he shall be suffered to gather the King's duty and not come up empty-handed. Hears that Sir John Hussye is out of his office of Master of the Wards. Would advise Mr. Chancellor to ask of the King the keeping of the wards of the Duchy and have them severed from the other. 	Warrant to the Great Wardrobe to deliver Ralph Jenet and Wm. Cheyne, yeomen of the Wardrobe of Beds, red say for covering the steps of a font, fine holland for the bottom of the same, two ells of "sipres or lawne" for a "straynor," and 4 ells to cover the font, and 6 ells of good linen cloth for "aprons and napkins for four gentlemen and the serjeant of our vestry, according to the old use and custom in that case heretofore used," also "leire," ribbon, gilt nails and hooks. 	15 March, 1510.—The letters of himself and colleagues of 25, 27 and 28 Feb. and his own of 3, 4 and 7 March, received together three days ago (hozi terzo zorno). To begin with the most important, that of the 3rd, about the Pope's saying he wished to have a real league with Venice, the ambassador shall thank his Holiness and urge him not to delay uniting all the potentates of Italy in such a league against the supremacy of the French. Tell his Holiness that one of the [French] prisoners, now released, said that as there was one God in Heaven so there should be only his King on earth. If the Pope make the league, the Emperor, England, Spain and other Christian princes will help him and he will be able to free not only his own dear country (fn. 4) but all Italy. Describe, for the Pope's information, their negociations with the Emperor.

	Long to hear from him that the King of England has effected their reconciliation with the Emperor. He shall tell the King how they are reconciled to the Pope, and cannot send their ambassador to England because the Emperor refuses safe conduct (begging him to intercede with the Emperor and Madame Margaret for it); also that as only the fear of England can keep France from invading Italy he should beware of giving ear to the King of France. The Councillors to be urged to promote the projected league between England, Scotland and other princes. 17 March, 1510.

	17 March, 1510.—His of 9 and 10 inst. from Civita Vecchia, are sufficiently answered by their last of the day before yesterday. He shall extol the Pope's wisdom, and measures taken against the designs of France, viz. (1) through the bp. of York and the swift mission of D. Christopher (fn. 5), to prevent the King of England agreeing with France, and (2) to bring over Maximilian to their side and have an understanding with the Swiss. In their last, declared the terms in which they stand with Maximilian, who has now refused their request of safeconduct for an ambassador to England. Trust that the Pope, through the bp. of Gurk, may render him more accommodating. It would be well to gain over Madame Margaret. France is making a show of preparations, and collecting money for fear of England.

	The enclosed is to be forwarded, through the bp. of York, to the consul in London. Dated 17 March, 1510.

	From Dr. Hirolamo Donado, ambassador, Civita Vecchia, 18 March.—Conversation with the Pope, who showed him letters of 3 and 5 March from the bp. of Grassis, ambassador in Germany, written at Augsburg, telling how he controverted statements in the Diet that Venice attacked states of the Church and called in the Turk, and the Pope would not absolve her. Also the Pope showed him letters of 24 Feb. from the Cardinal of Toledo, at Madrid, requesting him to absolve Venice.
	From the same, of same date.—Conversation with Spanish ambassador.
	From the same, Rome, 24 March.—Dined on the 22nd, at La Magnana, with the Pope, who declared himself satisfied with the answer about the Marquis of Mantua and discussed making a league with Spain, England, the Emperor and Venice. He thanked the Pope for the briefs to Spain and England. Returning to Rome, he communicated the whole to the English ambassador, who had sent the brief to England in the cover of a book, as the French search all who pass. Death of Card. Santa Sabina. The English ambassador says the King [of France] will not come to Italy this year and peace will not follow between England and France; also that, by letters of 4 March, the Spanish ambassador was still at Paris, and there was doubt that he might be bribed and rumour that 400 lances and 8,000 foot were sent to Italy.

	Is not surprised that he has written to him five letters from Padua without receiving any answer. The posts in Flanders are very indifferent. Would have thought it better not to write than have his letters miscarry, but now has learnt that his tutor, who, by virtue of James's nomination given at the writer's leaving, has received the archdeaconry of Aberdeen and yet the collation is detained. Begs him not to permit this. As he has already written of his condition and his lessons, is the more brief on this occasion. In consequence of the war, and to avoid suspicion, does not add the King's title. Padua, vii. kl. April.

	[Note of letters received 1 May, 1510.]
	From Andrea Badoer, London, 30 March.—Madame Margaret has written to the King complaining that her father wishes to sell Verona, Vicenza and Padua to the French. The King is well disposed to the Signory. At his Court are ambassadors of France, one of Spain and one of Burgundy. Describes his own poverty. Carmeliano has helped him, but Pasqualigo and the merchants have not. The French brought much wrought silver, as presents, and therefore have made the agreement with the King, which is said to be not bad for the Signory, and to contain an article that Venetian ships and galleys may navigate. This agreement is called invalid as the King is under 21. Wrote in December last to the banker, Alvise Pisani, that the Signory should send ambassadors to the Diet, and the King would mediate for them. The King's chamber always open to him. A courier coming from Venice has been robbed by Stradiots at Rovere. Has received the briefs of absolution and will deliver them after Easter, and likewise that for Burgundy. No talk of armata. The King of France will stay about Paris.

	From Lorenzo Pasqualigo to his brother Francesco, London, 30 March.—The Embassy of France has left, after renewing the agreement with the capitulation for navigation of ships and galleys, which is not to be trusted. The reports about Scotland and the King's wishing to break with France were fancies, and he never wrote them. No talk of naval preparations. The King of France, who is at Paris, going to Lyons, has made 10,000 Norman and Gascon foot for Italy. It were well to agree with the Emperor.

	From the ambassador, Hier. Donado, at Rome, 30 March.—The Pope sends Christopher Freschies into England with another brief, showing that the rose will be sent him by the said messenger, who will pass through France.
