R. O.	Since my coming home, Buttone has been with me and shown me your letters commanding him to attend your Lordship tonight or tomorrow with his sureties. Those who would have been bound for him the last day have ridden home since your Lordship's departure and he would find great difficulty in getting merchants, so I trust his own bond, considering his lands and substance, will be sufficient. 26 Feb.	358. Edward Montagu to Cromwell.
R. O.	Thomas Bryght was of late attainted of high treason, at Oxford, before Mr. Porte and me, drawn through the town and executed. The mayor and his brethren, the commissary and proctors of the university, Sir Walter Stoner, Sir Wm. Baryngton, Sir John Clarke, Sir John Browne, Mr. Wylliams, and others of the shire, assisted. Today Wm. Parr, the marquis of Exeter's bearward, and John Payne were attainted of high treason, before Mr. Porte and me, at Gloucester, by the verdict of Sir John Brydges, Sir John Huddelston, and others. Mr. Panter and five of his neigh bours did the King service therein, which it were well to recompense. My lord President and Mr. Sulyarde were also at Gloucester, and we determined to ride together to Hereford. Divers were punished for seditious words; and as for felons and murderers, there is such number in this circuit as I have not seen. Gloucester, Tuesday, 26 Feb. Signed.

26 Feb.	359. John Wellysburn to Cromwell.
R. O.	Mr. Chancellor of the Augmentations came hither on Tuesday sevennight. Praises his conduct. The tenants of Abendon are well content. Last week Mr. Chancellor viewed the manors belonging to Abendon, which are within 4 or 5 miles, and last Sunday he rode further. Finds much honesty in him, more than the common opinion or his own. For the lewd priest's matter which he brought before Cromwell, offered himself to Mr. Peter ad penam talionis if the matters he put in writing and delivered to Mr. Wrethesley are not sufficient for his deprivation. Cromwell should examine Andrewes, who was of Audlett's counsel. He saved the priest from hanging, being then undersheriff, and Sir Simon Harecourt, sheriff, as they be both this year. Has more to say against the priest than he left with Mr. Wrethesley, but thinks that sufficient.
	If the King's pleasure is that he shall be keeper here, asks him to move the Chancellor of Augmentations for such leases as will be convenient. The small house he keeps here at the King's charge relieves the town and country and keeps them quiet. Does not hear of any man grieved for dissolving the abbey. Abendon, 26 Feb.

R. O.	I have delivered your Lordship's letters to my lord President, who sent Mr. Ric. Bellacis on the 20th inst. to view some of the King's castles in Northumberland, Bamburghe, of which I have the rule, being one. I doubt not you will hear from my lord President how it is to be repaired, and I beseech you "to have your tender respect" towards its reparations. New castle-upon-Tyne, 26 Feb.

R. O.	Thanks him for his kindness when he was last at London. Delivered his letters to the archbp. of York on the 12th Jan., who promised to send his answer by his chancellor in eight days. Desires to know what he should do until the castle of Bambrugh, where he has the rule, be repaired, which is in such decay that there is neither lodging for man nor horse, door, window or house that is dry, as will be seen by the certificate to be made by my lord President. Has also written to my lord Privy Seal. Sends copy by bearer. Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 26 Feb.

27 Feb.	364. Henry Earl of Essex to Cromwell.
R. O.	In answer to Cromwell's letter in favour of Thomas Wrenn, King's auditor, assures him that he never had any lease of the Eail's manor of Drynkestone, in Suffolk. His only interest in it is under a lease made to his uncle John Wrenn, deceased, which was forfeited before his death by the laws of the realm. Moreover, since his uncle's death he had felled, stubbed, and stocked 800 oaks, as presented in the manor court, for which he has been indicted at the assizes, and the indictments have been removed to the courts at Westminster. Nevertheless, he has felled and stocked an additional hundred oaks, as Cromwell will see by a letter of Sir George Somerset, the Earl's steward. Would have waited on Cromwell himself, but as Cromwell knows, he has grown unwieldy with age, and his hearing is not what it has been. Basse, 27 Feb. Signed.

R. O.	On Saturday, 23 Feb., Sir Will. Bulmer, lately returned from London, repaired to his wife in co. Durham, made search among the evidences of her inheritance and so departed unkindly from her, as is reported. She accordingly, on Sunday the 24th, made search, with a friar named Thos. Gibson and her servant Will. Asilbe, whether any of her evidences were embezzled, and found a letter (enclosed) written to Sir William by the late rebel Sir John Bulmer all in his own hand, which as in duty bound she sent to us. Have charged the parties to keep the matter secret till your pleasure be known. Topclif, 27 Feb. Signed.

R. O.	"Thanks for letter sent to him and the escheator of Durham for finding an office of Thorp Bulmer, which is done. Has sent the King a letter of Sir John Bulmer to his brother Sir William, which has come to the knowledge of himself and Mr. Wodall. The Council know best how Sir William departed to come hither. He is far in debt and his wife's land under execution of statutes. Mr. Carnaby broke with me at Newcastle for leave to come up; to which I could not agree as he would leave the rebels on his back. He did not tell me why he would go to Court, but told some of my fellows he was weary of his office of Tynedale. Toplyff, 27 Feb.

28 Feb.	367. Instructions for Chr. Mount.
R. O.	The duke of Saxony and landgrave of Hesse lately sent letters to the King making overture to send hither a solemn ambassador, and the King, by letter, signified that shortly after the despatch of their messenger he would send some sage personage to declare to them his opinion touching the pretended Council of the bishop of Rome and his inclination for the advancement of God's word, so that they may the better instruct the personages they have promised to send hither. The King has therefore appointed Chr. Mount to go to the said Duke and Landgrave, deliver the King's letters, and, after preliminary compliments, &c., say that the King accepts their offered embassy and begs them to send men of wisdom and gravity. He is then to declare, as of himself, the King's labours to advance the Gospel and release his people from the yoke of Rome. Whereas by their letters to the King and declaration to the whole world it appears they foresee that the bp. of Rome's purpose in his pretended Council is the suppression of God's word and the maintenance of his own glory, Mount is to declare the King recognises no authority in the bp. of Rome to indict any such Council, and besides it is indicted to a place unsafe for a great part of the princes of Christendom to resort to. The King, therefore, marvels that at the diet of Ratispon they granted "that he might call a Council, or in case his Council so indicted should take effect at the place limited within six months after the indiction they would repair unto it." Now that the time prescribed is past and the Council tossed to another place, they should beware of giving him such authority again. The King would like to know their whole purpose touching the Council, and what order they have devised for their defence in case the bp. of Rome attempt to coerce them. And here Mount is to get them to declare how many princes are joined with them, and whether the king of Denmark is one, and whether they are bound for mutual defence in cause of religion only, or in case of any invasion; saying that the King's honour requires that in giving them assistance he should not offend his leagues with the Emperor. If they answer that in their articles and petitions sent hither by the bp. of Hereford and others the King's ambassadors, they expressed their opinion of the Council and marvel they had no answer, Mount shall say that answer was deferred until their sending hither of an honourable embassy. If they are resolved to send an ambassador, Mount must get them to appoint Philip Melancton to be one of the legation. If anyone speak of the King's supremacy, he shall say that at the coming of their embassy they shall be fully satisfied therein, and for his own opinion he shall cite such scriptures as are contained in a letter written by the bps. of London and Durham, of which he shall take a copy. He shall then take leave and return with the ambassadors if they are ready, or before then, having taken special care to investigate the conditions of their league.

[28] Feb.	368. Geo. Rolle to Lady Lisle.
R. O.	Commendations to lord Lisle. Has received her letter bidding him speak to lady Coffyn about her title to Esthagyngton, Devon. Sir Wm. Coffyn had an estate in tail to him and heirs of his body and is dead without issue, so that the reversion should revert to John Bassett, unless there was some discontinuance of the same made by Sir William in his life time. Mr. Ric. Coffyn, the next heir, claims it by his uncle's feoff men t, so that the law will put Mr. Bassett from his entry and compel him to take his action of "forme downe" which is very dilatory. Will sue out a writ of diem clausit extremum, to find Mr. Bassett's title if any evidence can be got from John Davye. This will cost 5 marks. When he meets Mr. Harys, the best way shall be taken. Lady Coffyn is in Leicestershire. Is going into the country on the 8th March. London, last day of Feb.

28 Feb.	369. Cranmer to Cromwell.
R. O. C.'s Letters, 362.	Hearing that the priory of Pomfrete is to be surrendered, (fn. n2) asks that John Wakefelde, controller of his household, may have the preferment of the said pricry with the demesnes in farm. Has known him for 12 years. He has always been ready to promote the word of God soberly in his country. The clergy hate him for speaking against their abusions. In this last commotion he was trained to Pomfrete Castle by lord Darcy, whose letters are enclosed, but seeing no fidelity in him, withdrew, to his jeopardy and the loss of his goods. He has been compensated by Norfolk, but not in com parison to his loss. Thinks there will be small suit for the lands, as they are valued to the uttermost and have no common pasture nor woods. [28] Feb. R. O.	370. John, bp. of Exeter, and Thomas Brerwod to the King and Council.
	On receipt at Credington, Devon, 1 Feb., of the enclosed commission, we sent copies thereof to every collector named in it, commanding them to be with us at Exeter by 24Feb. The abbots of Fourd and Buklond appeared not, although by their vice-collectors it appears that in August 28 Hen. VIII. the arrearages upon the abbot of Fourd, collector for the first year of the Subsidy, were 171l. 7s. 1½d., and upon the abbot of Buklond, collector in three years, 1,453l. 2s. 3¼d. For exoneration of the latter John Crofte, vice- collector, showed three acquittances made by the bp. of London, in May and October 29 Hen. VIII., amounting to 402l. 5s. 4d., and said that he and one Tucker, the abbot's brother, had 200l. more ready for the bp. of London. The vice-collectors to the two abbots demand allowances, i.e., 55l. 18s. 2d., taxed on the benefices of Adam Travers and Peter Ligham, clks., exempt from the general pardon and by Act of Parliament exonerate of the Subsidy; 179l. 16s. 9d. upon stipendiary priests who have fled the diocese or died without goods; 197l. 13s. 1d. for collection of the subsidy during four years, 8d. in the pound.
	As to the supplement mentioned in the said commission which the four collectors should have paid to the bp. of London in December 29 Hen. VIII., three of them, the prior of Bodmin and the abbots of Hartelond and Tavestocke, confess to have 103l. 4s. 3d. We know not what the abbot of Dunkeswell has, for whom we have often sent but he comes not. Exeter, the last day of February. Signed.

[28 Feb.]	371. Bp. Roland Lee to Cromwell.
R. O.	I have received your Lordship's letters, dated at the Court, 17 Feb., that, seeing the complaints against Sir John Huddleston on the one part, and Sir John Bridges on the other, I should keep a vigilant eye on the factions in Gloucestershire. I, Sir Wm. Sulyarde, Mr. John Vernon and Thos. Holte, were at the assizes at Gloucester with the justices, when one Roger Morgan, of Wales, on a charge of rape, forcibly carrying oft a widow from a church, was acquitted against strong evidence. This is a vice common in Wales, and for its reformation we caused the trial to be made, but all the honest persons we had appointed to the inquest absented themselves. "Thereupon the said jury was and is bounden to appear at the next assizes," and, meantime, before the Council in the Star Chamber upon 10 days warning. Sends copies of the evidence, and begs that the matter be "looked upon," else farewell all good rule. At the assizes, six were condemned for felony and two for treason, whose heads and quarters shall be sent to eight of the best towns of the shire. "Those twain" were the "berewarde" and his fellow brought by the sheriff from your Lordship. Two others for seditious words were put on the pillory and had their e[ars] nailed to the same. 	The walls of the four towers are sore decayed. Repairs are estimated as 40 mks. a piece, and 100 mks. for the great dongeon. Roofs, floors, and other woodwork, an iron door, a well, bakehouse, &c. is required. There is no ordnance or artillery. Signed.

R. O.	I thank you humbly for the great benefit you have conferred upon me out of regard for my uncle, Captain Chapron. I will take care to report it to him and he will be bound to you in consequence. There is a gentleman in prison who was in the galleon. I assure you if wrong was done he was not the cause, for he is a young man who was never at sea before, and is well kinned (apparenté) at die Court of France, for he is a near relative of Mons. le Vicomte de Za, one of the King's hundred gentlemen. The Viscount is also a kinsman of Mons. de Tarbes, who is gone in embassy to the king of England. I should have come to thank you in person, but was afraid the common people might do me some displeasure. Boulogne, last day of Feb.

R. O.	I have written certain letters to you, but, contrary to my wishes, for my maitre de chambre has dictated them and compelled me to write them. I am very sorry he should have so much power as to take and keep the letters you send me, so that I can neither see them nor answer them except as he pleases. If I was ill or ill-treated I could not send word. There are some here who have been ill for a month, and he has compelled them to send word that they were quite well. All the letters you will have from me are false, except those that have my seal like the present. Paris, 28 Feb.

Wilkins, iii. 829.	Mandate of John, bishop of Lincoln, (fn. n3) to the beneficed clergy throughout the deaneries of N., &c. (some of whom do not visit their cures once in three years or even in 10 years, and some not at all), to preach in person or by sufficient deputies at least four times a year in their churches, either in Latin or in the vulgar tongue as it shall seem fitting; so that, however, they introduce no doubtful matters, but truly declare the articles lately sanctioned by the King and the whole clergy of England in convocation. Add. MS. 5,498 f. 1.	1. "A memorial [by Cromwell] to my friend Philip Hoby touching such matters as he hath now committed to his charge."
B. M.	To repair with diligence to where the young duke of Longueville lies, where he shall find the two daughters of Mons. de Guyse, whom he shall salute, declaring that having business in these parts he could not omit to visit the one of them of whom he hath by his late being there some acquaintance. And therewith he shall view well the younger sister, and shall require the Duchess, her mother, or whoever has the government of them, that he may take the physiognomy of her, that he may join her sister and her in a fair table (picture). Which obtained, he shall go to the duke of Lorraine, deliver my letter of credence, and declare that no doubt he has heard of my good will to advance some personage of his house to the marriage of the King my master; and albeit my purpose has not taken the effect I desired, yet my affection remains the same; and learning lately that his Grace has a daughter of excellent quality I directed the said Philip, who has other affairs there, to see her and get her picture. Requiring him to show his inclination and to devise some overture to the King, upon which I may set forth this thing. Philip shall also speak in the same manner to the young lady. As soon as he has gotten her physiognomy and known the Duke's pleasure he shall return with all possible diligence.

B. M.	To repair to Mr. Hutton and tarry secretly at his lodging until he shall have been with the Regent. Then upon Hutton's advertisement to go to the Duchess, present Cromwell's commendations and say that no doubt she has heard from the Lady Regent and by the relation of the King's ambassador there, the cause of his coming and Cromwell's inclination to the advancement of the same as is declared in the letter. He shall then beg her to take the pain to sit that a servant of the King, who is come thither for that purpose, may take her physiognomy; and shall ask when Mr. Hanns (fn. n4) shall come to her to do so. The said Philip shall as of himself express a wish that both for my Lord's reports of her virtues and for his own view of them, it might please the King, being now without a wife, to advance her to the honour of a queen of England. And he shall well note her answers, her gesture and countenance with her inclination, that he may at his return declare the same to the King's Majesty. Her picture taken, he and Hanns shall return immediately. (The original was here signed by Cromwell)

	Given verbatim. The last sentence is:— For the great good reports of my Lord of your virtues and goodly qualities and by mine own view and experience of the same, considering the King's Majesty is widower and without a wife, would to God it would please his Majesty to advance your Grace to the honour of Queen of England, considering your virtuous qualities are a great deal more in deed than ever was notified, and for a great con firmation of amity and love to continue between the Emperor's Majesty and the King's Highness."

R. O.	I beg your favour for the bearer, Mr. John Symson, sometime abbot of Tychefylde, which abbey you have by the King's gift, subject to the payment of his pension of 20l. a year. If you can obtain for him the benefice of Horsted, Suss., valued in the King's books at 13l. 6s. 8d (the patronage belongs to the prior of Lewes and now to my lord Privy Seal) and pay the first fruits for him, I think he would release you of the pension. 	382. Sir Antony Wyndesor to Lord Lisle.
R. O.	As to your great wood you wrote for, there is a thousand ready tallied in Farahame park and a thousand more shall be ready shortly, and then your warrant is expired. I would advise you to make suit to my lord of Winchester to have a quantity of wood every year, for there is a new woodward, a servant of Sir Wm. Paulet's. As to game, there is no great plenty of male deer, but there is pretty store of rascal, as all the borders, gentlemen, and others, report. I think as long as it is unsowed Mr. Owedall and his will do no harm, but I intend to sow it this Lent. Your Lordship will understand that by sudden changes of officers there will be secret enemies, and when the wrong doers are tried, it will be well to have a friend about the King. You should write a loving letter to my lord Admiral to assist your officers. I doubt not the forest will increase in spite of all your enemies, and this will be a good mean to stay warrants which are like to come thick and threefold, if some persons can help it. I beg you to take no displeasure with James Hawksworth for his slack writing, for he is diligent in your affairs. I beg you to allow Ralph Rigby towards a servant, and to make it up four nobles.

Appulgarth, now chanter of the chantry in Willesthroppe chapel, in co. city of York, concerning an annual pension of 4l. 13s. 4d., which the said chanter claims, in right of his chantry and chapel, out of the issues of the possessions of the said monastery of Nonnemonketon.
