Wednesday before the Feast of SS. Simon and Jude [28 Oct.], 17 Edward I. [A.D. 1289], came Robert, son of John de Turri [or "de la Tour"], before the Aldermen and Chamberlain of London, and caused a writing to be read whereby he quitclaimed to John de Canterbury all his tenements and rents, within the City and without, for ever. Saturday before the Feast of St. Luke [18 Oct.] came Wolmar de Essex and acknowledged himself bound to James le Barber of Paris in the sum of £8; to be paid at Easter.

Saturday before the Feast of St. Martin [11 Nov.] came Walter Ruce and acknowledged himself bound to Walter Hauteyn in the sum of 113s. 4d.; to be paid, one moiety at Easter and the other at Michaelmas; and unless, &c.

The same day came Hugh Lupus and Simon le Fannere and acknowledged themselves bound to Geoffrey de Northon in the sum of £4; to be paid at Christmas.

The same day came Ralph Pointel and acknowledged himself bound to Stephen Vallad, merchant of Spain, in the sum of £20; to be paid by quarterly instalments of 40s. until, &c.

Tuesday before the Feast of St. Martin [11 Nov.] William de Seuelesho, chaucer, acknowledged himself bound to the executors of Jurdan Godchep in the sum of £8 6s. 8d.; to be paid by quarterly instalments of half a mark until, &c.

Friday the Feast of St. Martin [11 Nov.] came Simon de Merredeuue (?) and acknowledged himself bound to Robert, the Vicar of the church of Preston near Wengeham, (fn. 3) in the sum of 10 marks; to be paid at Christmas. If the said Robert die in the meanwhile, the money to be paid to Cristiana de Preston, living with the said Simon.

Wednesday the Feast of St. Edmund, Conf. [20 Nov.], 18 Edward I. [A.D. 1289], came William Poyntel, William de Helweton, and Stephen Thourgod, and acknowledged themselves bound to Giles Martin, merchant of Pampelon', (fn. 4) for Richard Poynte in the sum of £27, whereof £20 are to be paid at Christmas, and £7 a fortnight afterwards.

(Monday before the Feast of St. Hillary came the said Giles and acknowledged satisfaction. It is therefore cancelled.)

The following Friday came Henry de Durham, William Servad, and Paul Godchep, and acknowledged themselves bound to Friar Robert, the hermit of Crepelgate, (fn. 5) in the sum of 10 marks; to be paid on Easter Eve.

Wednesday the morrow of St. Nicholas [6 Dec.] came Robert Skot and acknowledged himself bound to Rustan de Solar' and William de Acre his merchant in the sum of 60s.; to be paid on Ash Wednesday.

Wednesday after the Feast of St. Lucia [13 Dec.] came John de Thele and acknowledged himself bound to William de Wakerle, Bailiff of Westminster, in the sum of 37s.; to be paid, viz., 11s. on Sunday next, and 26s. on the Feast of the Purification; and unless, &c.

Wednesday before the Feast of St. Lucia [13 Dec.], 18 Edward I. [A.D. 1289], came Henry de Arraz, son and heir of Wybert de Arraz, and acknowledged himself bound to John le Blound, draper, in the sum of 18 marks; to be paid, one moiety at Easter and the other at Michaelmas, and unless, &c.

Friday before the Feast of St. Thomas, Ap. [21 Dec.], came Walter Dirrie and acknowledged himself bound to Hugh de Viene in the sum of 7 marks and 40 pence; to be paid at the Feast of Pentecost.

Thursday before Christmas came William Sauvage, "armurer," and acknowledged himself bound to Geoffrey de Neuton, clerk, in the sum of 15 marks; to be paid by instalments of 5 marks at mid-Lent, Easter, and Midsummer.

Memorandum to the effect that on the same day Henry le Galeys paid to the Chamberlain and the Aldermen the sum of 100s. for making a courtesy (ad curialitatem faciendam) to the King and Queen on their arrival from parts beyond the sea; (fn. 6) on condition that it be not prejudicial to his letters from the lord the King.

Saturday the eve of the Circumcision [1 Jan.], 18 Edward I. [A.D. 1289-90], came Michael Garsie, merchant of Pampelona, and appointed Giles Martin his attorney to recover the sum of £18 from Thomas de Winchester.

Wednesday the eve of the Purification [2 Feb.], 18 Edward I [A.D. 1289-90], came Geoffrey de Cherlewode, late apprentice to Nicholas de Hedresete, and acknowledged himself bound to John de Abindon, draper, Nicholas Pikot, mercer, Adam Trog, girdler, and William Dagenhale, mercer, in the sum of £20 15s.; to be paid to them as executors of Nicholas de Hedresete, viz., 105s. at Midsummer, £5 5s. at Michaelmas and Christmas, and £5 at Easter, and unless, &c.

Monday after Ash Wednesday [15 Feb.] came Martin de Dullingham and acknowledged himself bound to Robert de Pakewode in the sum of 54s.; to be paid a fortnight after Easter.

(Friday after the Feast of St. Barnabas the said Robert came and acknowledged satisfaction. It is therefore cancelled.)

The same day came Roger le Waleys and acknowledged himself bound to the above Robert in the sum of 14s.; to be paid at the same time.

The same day came Ralph de Finchingfeud and acknowledged himself bound to the above Robert in the sum of 26s.; to be paid at the same time.

The same day came Joyce le Achatur for William "Neven" and acknowledged himself bound to the above Robert in the sum of 7s.; to be paid at the same time.

Monday after Ash Wednesday [15 Feb.] came Richard Godchep and acknowledged himself bound to William de Bettoyne, William Beck, and Ralph Godchep, executors of Jurdan Godchep, in the sum of £80; to be paid, viz., 100s. at Easter and Midsummer, and 40s. at Michaelmas and following quarters until, &c.

The same day came Paul Godchep and acknowledged himself bound to the same executors in the sum of 80 marks; to be paid, viz., 10 marks at Easter and Midsummer, and 10 marks every Christmas, until, &c.

[A.D. 1289-90], William de Laufare, cotiler, who had the guardianship of Robert, son of Robert Deumars, granted to him by the Mayor and Aldermen, anno 6 Edward I., came before Sirs John de Banquell, Alderman, (fn. 8) and William de Bettoyne, Chamberlain and Alderman, (fn. 9) and others, and rendered an account of the sum of £9 6s. 8d. received in money and of 13s. annual rent issuing from a certain house in the City of London. And after all costs and expenses he answered for the sum of £20 clear to the use of the aforesaid Robert, which sum remains in the charge of the said William with the consent of the auditors aforesaid, of Cristiana, the mother of the said Robert, and other friends, to be disposed of for the benefit of the said Robert wheresoever and whensoever required. And thereupon the said William offers security, viz.......

Letter from John, Duke of Brittany and Earl of Richmond, to R[alph] de Sandwich, Warden of the City, and Commons of the same, acknowledging the receipt of letter complaining of the conduct of the Duke's stewards and bailiffs towards the citizens of London at his Fair of St. Botolph's. He is sending his steward Richemund to notify his wishes to the citizens, promising to see justice done. Dated the Feast of Innocents [28 Dec.].

The King's writ to Edmund, Earl of Cornwall, his locum tenens in England. Whereas, at the request of the citizens and merchants of Bordeaux, he had recently given orders that they should be allowed to bring their wines, &c., into the City of London on payment of the accustomed dues, the citizens of London now complained that such a proceeding was prejudicial to their liberties. He is to summon a council and to see justice done to both parties. Dated at "Bona Garda," in Gascony, 18 Jan., 17 Edward I. [A.D. 1288-9].

Be it remembered that on Thursday after the Feast of St. Matthias [24 Feb.], 19 Edward I. [A.D. 1290-1], came Fulk le Bret, on whom a "macer" cup had been seized for an assessment of 3s., temp. Hugh Motun, Chamberlain, and granted the cup to Geoffrey de Norton to acquit him; and it was delivered to the said Geoffrey in the presence of the said Fulk, &c., and the said Geoffrey will answer to the Chamberlain for the 3s. aforesaid.

Friday after the Feast of St. Scolastica [10 Feb.], 19 Edward I. [A.D. 1290-1], came William de Bettoyne, executor of Jordan Godchep, and acknowledged that he had received from Paul Godchep, mercer (mercenarius), the sum of 10 marks, in part payment of 80 marks in which the said Paul stood bound to the said William and his coexecutors by a recognizance formerly made on paper, viz., on Monday after Ash Wednesday, 18 Edward I.

Be it remembered that on Thursday the Feast of the Invention of H. Cross [3 May], 19 Edward I. [A.D. 1291], came Walter Mitte, Mayor (Mere) of Caleys, before the Warden and Aldermen and acknowledged that he had bought 7 casks of wine from a stranger and 3 casks from a certain freeman of the City out of the 12 casks which had been seized upon him as forfeited; and further, that the said wine did not belong to Sir Edmund the King's brother or to any one of his household, but belonged to him (the said Walter); and the said Sir Edmund had petitioned that the said Walter might be forgiven his forfeiture this time.

The same day (in the presence of Ralph de Sandwych, Warden; Gregory de Rokele, (fn. 10) Stephen Aswy, (fn. 11) Robert de Basinge, (fn. 12) Ralph le Blound, (fn. 13) William de Farndon, (fn. 14) Richard Aswy, (fn. 15) John le Blound, (fn. 16) Nicholas de Winchester, (fn. 17) William de Bettoyne, (fn. 18) Adam de Foleham, (fn. 19) John de Canterbury, (fn. 20) and Walter Hauteyn, (fn. 21) Aldermen, Thomas Romeyn and William de Leyre, Sheriffs) Thomas Juvenal was elected by the assent of the foregoing to the office of Common Serjeant of London, and sworn well and faithfully to perform that office, &c.

Tuesday the morrow of St. Peter in Cathedra [22 Feb.], 18 Edward I. [A.D. 1289-90], came Hugh de Waltham, clerk to the Sheriffs of London, and acknowledged himself bound to William de Bettoyne, Chamberlain of the Guildhall, in the sum of £18; to be paid fifteen days after Easter, and unless, &c. Nevertheless the said Hugh delivered to the said William 10 casks of wine which remained in the custody of the said Hugh in two cellars in the Vintry, by way of pledge, on the understanding that if the said wine be not sufficient for the aforesaid sum, the balance shall be raised on other goods and chattels of the said Hugh.

(Wednesday after the Feast of St. Hillary, anno 19 Edward I., came William de Bettoyne and acknowledged that the said Hugh had satisfied him of the money. It is therefore cancelled.)

[A.D. 1289-90], a certain writing was acknowledged whereby Friar J. de Coleworth, Prior of Westminster, bound himself to Paul Godchep, merchant of London, in the sum of £16 for 150 friezes for clothing of the Friars, at the hands of Roger de Bures, about Michaelmas, anno 17 Edward I.; to be paid, one moiety a fortnight after Easter in the year aforesaid, or within eight days next following, and the other a fortnight after Pentecost. Dated at the Chapter House, Westminster, v. Nones March [11 March], the year aforesaid.

Saturday before the Feast of St. Gregory [12 March], 18 Edward I. [A.D. 1289-90], came Fulk de St. Edmund and acknowledged himself bound to Ernard du Spucz (fn. 22) in the sum of 8 marks; to be paid at the Feast of Pentecost, and unless, &c.; and the same appoints "Moniun'" (?) Bonin and Peter de la Chaumbre his attorneys to recover and receive the money.

Wednesday after the Feast of St. Gregory [12 March] came Richard de Hakeburne, mercer, before the Chamberlain and acknowledged himself bound to Hugelin Peter and his partners, merchants of the Society of Beteri (?) of Luka, in the sum of £7; to be paid, viz., 40s. at Michaelmas and Christmas, and 60s. at St. Giles's Fair; and unless, &c.

The same day came William Heyrun before the Chamberlain and acknowledged himself bound to the same in the sum of 76s.; to be paid by annual instalments of 10s. at Michaelmas until, &c.; and unless, &c. Afterwards the said William promised to pay 16s. at Michaelmas in the second year next ensuing, &c.

[24 June] came Gerard de Brie, attorney of William de Prangers, and Simon Godard, clerk, attorney of Peter de Russilun, and acknowledged satisfaction for the sum of £14 17s. in which Richard de Asseburne, John de Westmelle, and Henry de Peck bound themselves to the said William and Peter on Friday after the Feast of Conception B. Tuesday the Feast of St. Peter ad Vincula [1 Aug.], 18 Edward I. [A.D. 1290], came John Fitz Roger and acknowledged himself bound to John Viel in the sum of 20s., to be paid by instalments of half a mark at the Feast of St. Bartholomew, Michaelmas, and the Feast of All Saints; and unless, &c.

Saturday after the Feast of St. Bartholomew [24 Aug.] came Reginald le Chandeler and William his son, residing at St. Michael le Quern, and acknowledged themselves bound to Ponce "Raby" (fn. 26) and Peter Remund, "Peytveyn," merchants of Toluse, in the sum of £14 for wine; to be paid, viz., 100s. at Michaelmas, and 60s. on Christmas Eve, Easter Eve, and Midsummer Eve, as appears in a certain writing obligatory between them made and sealed with their seals; and unless, &c. Wednesday after the Feast of St. Michael [29 Sept.] came Hugh de Fremingham, apothecary, and John, son of Thomas Herun, and acknowledged themselves bound to John le Chalicer in the sum of 18s., to be paid, viz., one moiety at Christmas and the other at the Feast of the Annunciation.

Friday the Feast of Translation of St. Edward [13 Oct.] came John Orpedeman and promised to make good to the executors of Thomas Orpedeman any of the debts he may have received, as contained in three rolls which he had delivered to Thomas Cross and the other executors of Thomas Orpedeman.

Saturday after the Feast of All Saints [1 Nov.] came William de Aveynes and acknowledged himself indebted to John de Aveynes in the sum of £6; to be paid by yearly instalments of 40s. at St. Botolph's Fair until, &c.
