Friday in the week of Pentecost, 6 Edward I. [A.D. 1278], came Thomas de Cestrehunte, cordwainer, and acknowledged himself bound to Peter de Bures, merchant of Spain, in the sum of £22 for leather and bazen; the same to be paid six weeks after the Feast of St. John the Baptist, viz., two-thirds in round pence and one-third in good halfpence; and unless, &c.

On the Saturday following came Thomas de Derby, Richard de Burgo, Hugh de Byflete, and John de Rele, cordwainers, and acknowledged themselves severally bound to Bernard Mauffray de "Kerisi" in the sum of £43 12s. in round pence; the same to be paid at Winchester Fair, and unless, &c.

The same day the recognitors aforesaid acknowledged themselves bound to Gerard de Perstis, of Newcastle, in the sum of £16 in whole pence for leather; the same to be paid at Winchester Fair, and unless, &c.

The same day came Thomas de Derby and acknowledged himself bound to Gerard de Perstis in the sum of £13, viz., two-thirds in round pence and one-third in good halfpence, for leather, the same to be paid in the quinzaine of St. Michael, viz., the Feast of St. Edward the King [13 Oct.]; and unless, &c.

Robertus Renaume.

Wednesday next after the octave of St. John the Baptist [24 June], the same year, Robert Renaume, citizen of London, acknowledged himself bound to Waubert Pyket, burgess of Douay, in the sum of £80 for cloth and for money, &c.; the same to be paid, viz., 100s. at St. Ives Fair, A.D. 1279, and so from year to year until the whole be paid; and unless, &c.

Tuesday next after the Feast of Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr [7 July], 6 Edward I. [A.D. 1278], came Richard de Morton, leather merchant, and acknowledged himself bound to William Russinol, a Lombard, and Jakemin de Pavia his partner, in the sum of £70; the same to be paid at the Feast of St. Andrew next, viz., £45 in round pence and £25 in good halfpence without clipping. Surety for due payment, Adam Brock, cordwainer, and unless, &c.

Saturday next after the Feast of St. Swythin [15 July], the same year, a final concord was made between Henry de Hereford, vintner, on the one part, and Ralph Hardel and John his brother on the other, whereby the said Ralph and John bound themselves to pay the said Henry ten casks of wine of the value of £20, if they should be the cause of any dispute with the said Henry. The deed enrolled in the presence of Poncius de la More, William de Durham, and Hugh Motun, Chamberlain.

Wednesday the Feast of St. Margaret [20 July], the same year, came Robert de Totenham and Hugh de Byflete, cordwainers, and acknowledged themselves bound to Peter de Yveneys, merchant of Spain, in the sum of £30 for leather; the same to be paid in the quinzaine of the Feast of St. Michael, one moiety in good pence and the other in good halfpence; and unless, &c.

Saturday next before the Feast of St. James [25 July], the same year, came Henry de Pelham, Richard de Burgo, John de Releye, John de Westmulne, and Thomas de Derby, and acknowledged themselves severally bound to Gerard de Russilun and William de "Rokoleby" in the sum of £80 5s. for leather and bazen; the same to be paid, viz., £55 at the Feast of All Saints and the residue at the Feast of St. Nicholas following; and unless, &c.

Friday next before the Feast of St. Peter ad Vincula [1 Aug.], the same year, came Ralph de Chester, Alan de Holecote, and Robert de "Ehefeud," skinners, and acknowledged themselves severally bound to Gerard de Russilun, merchant of Spain, in the sum of £30 for coney-skins; the same to be paid in good, unclipped pence and halfpence on the Feast of St. Edward next, and unless, &c.

Wednesday the Feast of St. Laurence [10 Aug.], the same year, came Henry de Pelham, Richard de Burgo, John de Westmulne, and Richard de Asseburne, and acknowledged themselves severally bound to Peter de Yveneys, merchant of "Waumesel," in Spain, in the sum of £49 10s. for leather; to be paid at the Feast of the Nativity the following year, and unless, &c.

Wednesday next after the Feast of Assumption of B. Mary [15 Aug.], the same year, came Tristram le Cheverer and acknowledged himself bound to Gerard de Russilun, and William de Prangeres and William de "Rocolum-beuino" (fn. 1) his partners, merchants of Spain, in the sum of £50 for goat-skins; to be paid on the Feast of St. Nicholas [6 Dec.], 7 Edward I. [A.D. 1278], in good, unclipped pence and halfpence. Pledges, Robert Haweteyn and Walter Haweteyn And unless, &c.

[A.D. 1278], came Thomas de Cestrehunte and Vincent de Totenham, cordwainers, and acknowledged themselves severally bound to Peter de Yveneys, merchant of Spain, in the sum of £23 for leather; the same to be paid, viz., one moiety in good pence and the other in good halfpence, at Christmas, 7 Edward I. [A.D. 1278]; and unless, &c. Nicholas de Madrit appointed Peter's attorney.

Tuesday next before the Feast of Nativ. B. Mary [8 Sept.], the same year, came Richard de Burgo, John de Westmulne, Thomas de Derby, and Hugh de Byflete, cordwainers, and acknowledged themselves severally bound to Peter Peres, merchant of Burus, (fn. 2) in Spain, in the sum of £32 for leather; the same to be paid at Christmas, and unless, &c.

Friday the morrow of the Nativity B. Mary [8 Sept.], the same year, came John de Northawe, goldsmith, and acknowledged he had received two cups of mazer (de murro) circled with silver, without feet, together with the sum of 20s. for adding feet to the said cups, from William de Ho, steward to the Queenmother; so that the said John shall well and truly make the cups according to agreement, and shall deliver them to the said William or his attorney within one month after Michaelmas Baudet Hun', le Buscher, of the Ward of Castle Baynard, appointed William's attorney to attend the enrolment and to receive the cups.

Tuesday before the Exaltation of H. Cross [14 Sept.], the same year, came John de Releye, cordwainer, and acknowledged himself bound to Peter Peres, merchant of Bures, and Martin John (?), merchant of "Botor'," in the sum of £20 for leather; the same to be paid in good, unclipped pence and halfpence at the Feast of St. Martin [11 Nov.] the following year [A.D. 1278], and unless, &c.

Friday next before Michaelmas, 6 Edward I. [A.D. 1278], came Richard de Burgo, John de Releye, Hugh de Byflete, and Thomas de Derby, and acknowledged themselves bound to Bartram de la Speres de Cundom' in the sum of £42 for leather; the same to be paid at the Feast of St. Andrew [30 Nov.] the following year [A.D. 1278], viz., two-thirds in round pence and the remainder in good halfpence; and unless, &c.

Tuesday before Michaelmas, the same year, came Emma, wife of Bernard de Fylers, and acknowledged herself bound to Walter de Sandon', co. Surrey, in the sum of 100s. for wheat, barley, and oats; to be paid at the Feast of the Purific. B. Mary [2 Feb.] the following year [A.D. 1278-9], and unless, &c.

Saturday after the octave of St. Michael, the same year, came Isabella Bukerel and Dyonisia, relict of William Bukerel, executors of William Bukerel, draper, (fn. 3) and acknowledged themselves severally bound to John Dunden and his partners, merchants of "Cauz," in the sum of £20 9s. 4d. for cloth; the same to be paid, viz., £7 10s. at the Feast of St. Martin, £7 10s. at the Feast of the Purification, and £5 9s. 4d. at Easter; and unless, &c.

The same day came Robert, late servant to Henry de Gloucester, goldsmith, and acknowledged himself bound in the sum of £10 for releasing him from service; the same to be paid to the said Henry by instalments, viz., 5 marks at Christmas next and 2 marks at each of the five quarters following. Sureties for payment, viz., Richard, son of Richard Bonaventure, John de Pontefract, goldsmith; Gregory le Lorimer, Richard Bonaventure, goldsmith, and unless, &c. Also Walter le Poter became surety to indemnify the Chamberlain by reason of the above acquittance. (fn. 4)

Saturday next after the octave of St. Michael, the same year, came Reymund de Bordeaux, saddler, and Symon de Sancto Licio [Senliz], saddler, and acknowledged themselves bound to Gobert Gerard de "Caurs" (fn. 5) or Stephen "Karewen" de "Caurs" in the sum of £31 16s., viz., one moiety in good, unclipped pence and the other in halfpence, for leather and red bazen; the same to be paid at the Feast of St. Nicholas next [6 Dec.], and unless, &c.

Friday the morrow of the Feast of Translation of St. Edward [13 Oct.], the same year, came Matthew the saddler, of the Ward of Chepe, to the Guildhall, and acknowledged himself bound to Boydin de Cambray in the sum of 76s.; to be paid at the Feast of St. Nicholas next [6 Dec.], and unless, &c.

Monday next before the Feast of St. Luke [18 Oct.], the same year, came Henry de Pelham, Richard de Burgo, John de Releye, Robert de Totenham, Thomas de Derby, Thomas de Cestrehunte, Hugh de Byflete, and John de Westmulne, and acknowledged themselves severally bound to Stephen de "Caruien," merchant of "Cauurs," and Bernard his brother, in the sum of £113 for leather and bazen; the same to be paid, viz., £13 at the Feast of St. Hillary next and £100 on Palm Sunday; and unless, &c.

The same day came John de Pontefract, goldsmith, and acknowledged himself bound to Robert, late servant to Henry de Gloucester, in the sum of £10, money borrowed; the same to be paid, viz., 5 marks at Christmas, 7 Edward I. [A.D 1278], and 2 marks at each of the five quarters following. Sureties for payment, viz., Hugh de la More, John, son of David de Enefeud, goldsmith, Colin de Northamptone, goldsmith, Martin de Amberesbire, goldsmith; and unless, &c.

Saturday next after the Feast of All Saints, the same year, came Hugh de Byflete, Richard de Burgo, John de Releye, John de Westmulne, Thomas de Derby, and Vyncent de Totenham, cordwainers, and acknowledged themselves bound to Arnold Beck, of Montpellier, and Bernard de "Vrue," of the same, in the sum of £35 for leather; the same to be paid at the Feast of Pentecost, and unless, &c.

Gendun.

Friday the Feast of St. Martin [11 Nov.] before Christmas, in the month of October (sic), the same year, came John Paris (?), saddler (cellarius), and acknowledged himself bound to John Gendun, merchant of "Caurs," in the sum of £17 in good pence and halfpence; to be paid to him or his attorney, or to his partners, viz., Peter or William de Busseneys, of the company of William de Verteyl, on the morrow of Pentecost; and unless, &c.

[A.D. 1278], came Richard de Burgo and acknowledged himself bound to Peter de Wamesel, in Spain, merchant, in the sum of £4 10s. for bazen; the same to be paid, viz., 50s. at the Feast of St. Nicholas [6 Dec.], and the residue at Christmas; and unless, &c.

Tuesday next after the Feast of St. Martin [11 Nov.] in October (sic), the same year, came Thomas de Cestrehunte, cordwainer, and acknowledged himself bound to Hugh Megg', or Bartram Belny his servant, in the sum of £9 for bazen; to be paid at Stamford Fair at mid-Lent, and unless, &c.

Thursday next after the Feast of St. Martin [11 Nov.] in October (sic), 7 Edward I. [A.D. 1278], came Bartholomew le Blund, goldsmith, and acknowledged himself bound to "Deutanto the Bailiff (?) in the sum of 39s. for the manufacture of a cup; the same to be paid within eight days of Wednesday next after the Feast of St. Edmund, Abp. [16 Nov.], and unless, &c.

Wednesday the Feast of St. Andrew, Ap. [30 Nov.], 7 Edward I. [A.D. 1278], came Richard de Burgo, Henry de Pelham, John de Releye, Thomas de Derby, Thomas de Cestrehunte, Richard de Aseburne......and acknowledged themselves severally bound to Peter, son of Peter Peres, and Andrew his brother, of Castle Suris (de Castello murium), (fn. 6) in the sum of £60 8s. 8d. for leather and bazen; the same to be paid, viz. [two-thirds] at mid-Lent in good, unclipped pence, and one-third at le Hokeday in good, unclipped halfpence; and unless, &c.

The same day came the aforesaid Richard, Henry, John, Thomas, Thomas, and Richard, together with Hugh de Byrflete, to the house of Hugh Motun, the Chamberlain, when the Jews were at the Guildhall, (fn. 7) and acknowledged themselves bound to the above Peter and Andrew, of "Castris Surys," in the like sum for leather and bazen; the same to be paid, viz., two-thirds in good pence and one-third in good halfpence, one moiety at mid-Lent, and the other at le Hokeday; and unless, &c.

Wednesday the morrow of St. Lucia [13 Dec.], 7 Edward I. [A.D. 1278], came William de Bray, currier, to the house of Hugh Motun, Chamberlain, and acknowledged himself bound to Ralph Poyntel, of the same craft (ejusdem officii), in the sum of 66s. 6d. for leather; the same to be paid, viz., 6s. 6d. on Christmas Eve, 20s. at Easter, and so from term to term 20s. until the whole be paid; and unless, &c.

Thursday after Ash Wednesday [15 Feb.], the same year [A.D. 1278-9], came Richard de Reyns, cordwainer, and acknowledged himself bound to John Bartram, merchant of Pampeluna, in the sum of £3 16s. for leather; to be paid at le Hokeday, and unless, &c.

On the Feast of St. Mark [25 April], the same year [A.D. 1279], came William de Braye and William Poyntel, curriers, to the house of Hugh Motun, Chamberlain, when the Jews found pledges (vadiati) at the Guildhall, and acknowledged themselves bound to Gerard Russilun, merchant of Spain, in the sum of £8 in good, unclipped pence and halfpence, for Spanish goat-fells; the same to be paid to him or to William de "Rocolbewyn" his attorney, viz., 40s. at Easter, 60s. at Pentecost, and 60s. at Midsummer; and unless, &c.

Wednesday before the Feast of Annunciation B Mary [25 March], the same year, came Walter le Waleys, cordwainer, to the shop of Hugh Motun, Chamberlain, and acknowledged himself bound to Peter Custes, merchant of Spain, in £50 for leather; the same to be paid, viz., one moiety in good pence and the other in good halfpence unclipped, in the rent (in redditu) of the said Walter at St. Ives Fair, and unless, &c.

Friday next before the Feast of Annunciation B. Mary [25 March], 7 Edward I. [A.D. 1278-9], came Thomas de Derby, cordwainer, and acknowledged himself bound to Matthew de Bures, merchant of Spain, in the sum of £7 10s. for leather; the same to be paid, viz., one moiety at the Feast of Pentecost and the other at Midsummer, to wit £6 in round, unclipped pence and the remainder in good halfpence; and unless, &c.

Saturday in Easter week, 7 Edward I. [A.D. 1279], came William de Braye and William Poyntel, curriers, to the shop of Hugh Motun, and acknowledged themselves bound to Matthew, merchant of Bures, in Spain in the sum of £8 10s. for leather; the same to be paid, viz., one moiety in good pence and the other in good halfpence, without clipping, on the octave of St. John the Baptist; and unless, &c.

The same day came Richard Prueth, mercer, to the same place, and acknowledged himself bound to Nicholas Dare, burgess of St. Omer, in the sum of £4 7s. for wimples (pro Ginplis) of St. Omer; the same to be paid within one month from Saturday next, and unless, &c.

Thursday next before le Hokeday, the same year, came Thomas de Derby, cordwainer, to the shop of Hugh Motun, and acknowledged himself bound to Matthew de Bures, merchant of Spain, in the sum of £6 10s. for leather; the same to be paid at the Feast of St. James [25 July], viz., two-thirds in round, unclipped pence and the rest in good halfpence; and unless, &c.

Saturday next before le Hokeday, the same year, came Nicholas de Kerkeby, "megucer," and acknowledged himself bound to "Arparicius," merchant of Bures, in Spain, in the sum of £13 for white leather, viz., "Baldred" of Spain; the same to be paid at the Feast of Pentecost in good, unclipped pence or halfpence, and unless, &c.

Tuesday next after the Feast of H. Trinity [28 May], 7 Edward I. [A.D. 1279], came Richard Prouet to the house of Hugh Motun, Chamberlain, and acknowledged himself bound to Nicholas Dare, merchant, in the sum of 72s. for wimples (pro wimplis) of St. Omer; the same to be paid in good money that day five weeks, and unless, &c.

Thursday next after the Feast of H. Trinity, the same year, came William de Braye and William Poyntel, curriers, to the house of Hugh Motun, Chamberlain, and acknowledged themselves bound to Matthew de Bures, in Spain, in the sum of £15 10s. for leather; the same to be paid at the Feast of St. Bartholomew [24 Aug.], viz., £10 in round pence and £5 10s. in round halfpence; and unless, &c.

Trinity, the same year, came Thomas de Derby, cordwainer, to the house of Hugh Motun, and acknowledged himself bound to Sanchius [Sauchius ?] de Botor' in the sum of £15, of good, round, unclipped pence, for leather; the same to be paid on the Feast of St. Giles [1 Sept.] at Winchester Fair, and unless, &c.

Monday next after the Feast of St. Barnabas [11 June], the same year, came Henry de Coventre, and acknowledged himself bound to Arnold Johannis de Contins, merchant of Bayonne, in the sum of £50 good and lawful sterling, the mark being reckoned at 13s. 4d.; the same to be paid at Michaelmas next, and unless, &c. Thereupon the said Arnold came and granted £10 of the said debt to John de Roncevaus (or Ronceval), (fn. 8) and he would stand to the law in the City in respect of the sum of £10 which is still owing, as the said John de Roncevaus asserts, and which was paid at the request of the said Arnold to Bertram Malvin and on his behalf, but this the said Arnold denies. Accordingly £10 of the debt are to stand over until the matter be discussed between them, &c. (fn. 9)

Wednesday next after the Feast of St. Botolph [17 June], the same year, came William de Braye and William Poyntel, curriers of "Basanc'," (fn. 10) and acknowledged themselves bound to Gerard de Russilun and William de Rocolbewyn, merchants of Spain, in the sum of £11 10s., good money, for bazen of Spain; the same to be paid, viz., one moiety at the Feast of St. Bartholomew and the other at Michaelmas; and unless, &c.

Monday next after the Feast of Nativity of B. Mary [8 Sept.], 7 Edward I. [A.D. 1279], came Richard de Mortone to the Guildhall, and acknowledged himself bound to Gerard de Turon' de Caus and John de la Pype, merchants of Bures, in the sum of £50 for leather and bazen; to be paid at Christmas, 8 Edward I. [A.D 1279], and unless, &c.

Friday next after the Feast of St. Lucia [13 Dec.], 8 Edward I. [A.D. 1279], came Simon de Gant, the elder, to the Guildhall, and acknowledged himself bound to Simon de Gant, his son, a clerk, in the sum of £40, money borrowed; to be paid in the quinzaine of the Purification, and unless, &c.

Monday before the Feast of St. Thomas, Ap. [21 Dec.], the same year, came Walter Hauteyn to the Guildhall, and acknowledged himself bound to Robert de Basinge in the sum of £40 for wool; the same to be paid, viz., £20 at Easter and £20 at Pentecost; and unless, &c.

Friday before Christmas, the same year, came Reginald de Suffolk, "feleper," and Gilbert the pelterer of Honilane, before William de Durham at the Guildhall, and acknowledged themselves bound, as principal debtors, to Godwyn the "feleper," (fn. 11) on behalf of Richard le Lung, "feleper," in the sum of £10; the same to be paid by quarterly instalments of 50s., and unless, &c.

The same day the said Richard le Lung, "feleper," acknowledged himself bound to the said Godwyn the "feleper" in the sum of 40s.; to be paid by instalments of 10s. a quarter, and unless, &c.

Wednesday next after the Feast of the Purification [2 Feb.], 8 Edward I. [A.D. 1279-80], came Hugh Trigot, "laner," (fn. 12) and acknowledged himself bound to Ralph de Bedefunte in the sum of five marks; the same to be paid by instalments of one mark a quarter, and unless, &c.

Monday next after the octave of the Purification, the same year, came Saer de Bockinge and acknowledged himself bound to Adam de Arcubus in the sum of £10 13s. 4d. for a horse; the same to be paid at mid-Lent, and unless, &c.

Saturday next after Ash Wednesday [16 Feb.], 8 Edward I. [A.D. 1279-80], came Simon Blouggerun, mercer, and acknowledged himself bound to Gilbert le Boucler in the sum of £6; to be paid by instalments of 15s. a quarter, and unless, &c.

Friday next before the Feast of Annunciation of B. Mary [25 March.], the same year, came Ralph de Balesham, saddler, and acknowledged himself bound to Gerard de Russilun in the sum of 68s. for leather and bazen; the same to be paid, viz., one moiety at Hockedaye and the other at the Feast of H. Trinity; and unless, &c.

The following Saturday came Ralph de Balesham, saddler, Gilbert de Granele, and John de Gardebois, and acknowledged themselves bound to Peter Coste in the sum of £4 13s. 4d. for bazen; the same to be paid at Whitsuntide, and unless, &c.

The same day came Ralph de Balesham and acknowledged himself bound to John Gardebois, son of Richard de Danecastre, saddler, in the sum of 48 marks; the same to be paid, viz., 20 marks at Whitsuntide, 20 marks at the Feast of St. Laurence at St. Botolph Fair, and 8 marks at the Feast of All Saints; and unless, &c. And the said John appoints Avice his wife his attorney to receive the money.

Friday next after the Feast of Annunciation of B. Mary [25 March.], 8 Edward I. [A.D. 1280], came Robert le Marescal, "Cossun," (fn. 13) and acknowledged himself bound to Ralph le Blund in 8 marks of good and new sterlings; (fn. 14) the same to be paid at Michaelmas, and unless, &c.

The same day came Richard Pruet and acknowledged himself bound to Robert Deumars in the sum of £9 4s.; to be paid at St. Botolph Fair, and unless, &c.

Saturday the morrow of the Assumption B. Mary [15 Aug.], the same year, came Cristian the taverner and acknowledged he had received six casks of wine from William Varache for sale, which wine was worth £13 and was stored in the cellars of Walter de Berdene. He further acknowledged he had received from the aforesaid William four silver cups weighing 40s. 3d., which he would account for when he had sold the wine; and for so doing he pledges himself and chattels, &c.

[29 Aug.] came Sarah, widow of Richard de "Depedale," and Elias de Wicumbe, and bound themselves to indemnify Robert de Thorneye and Stephen de "Depeldale" to the extent of 43s. against the executors of the aforesaid Richard, as appears in a certain deed between them made. Elena de Blonmoster gave 6s. for the recognizance.
