Monday before the Feast of St. Dunstan [19 May], 19 Edward I. [A.D. 1291], the Small Beam granted to William de Bettoyne for life. (fn. 1)

The same day, in the presence of the Warden, Sheriffs, and Aldermen, a certain plot of ground and a shop situate without Lodgate were granted to Johanna, relict of Bartholomew the Smith (Faber), at an annual rent of 10s., payable quarterly to the Chamberlain, on condition she cleared the said gate of all filth, &c., whenever necessary.

Deed of grant by John, son of John de Betoigne, to Walter de Stibenhuthe of an annual quitrent of 40s. issuing from a tenement in the parish of All Hallows de Stanyngechirche, situate between "Martelane" towards the east, and a little lane which leads to the said church towards the west; to hold the same for a term of ten years from the Feast of St. John Bapt. [24 June], 3 Edward II. [A.D. 1310]. In case of sale the said Walter to have priority by half a mark. Witness, Thomas Romayn, Mayor, &c. Dated the day and year above written.

The King's letters renewing the right of the Mayor and citizens to take certain customs for the term of two years from Easter next to assist them in the repair of the City's walls and enclosure, on condition that they cause the City wall near the Preaching Friars towards the Thames to be erected. (fn. 2) Dated Nettleham, 4 Feb., 12 Edward I. [A.D. 1283-4].

Writ to the Sheriff of Middlesex commanding him to take into the King's hand all lands and tenements in his bailiwick, the owners of which (as possessing 40 librates of land in fee and inheritance) had failed to take upon themselves knighthood, as they should have done, (fn. 3) pursuant to a precept of 18 Feb., 20 Edward I. [A.D. 1291-2] Dated Newcastle-on-Tyne, 2 Jan., 21 Edward I. [A.D. 1292-3].

Friday after the Feast of Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr of Canterbury [7 July], 22 Edward I. [A.D. 1294], came Adam de Bikenore, potter, and acknowledged himself bound to Nicholas de Wadrideseye, "dinaunter," (fn. 5) in the sum of 100s.; to be paid at the Feast of St. Bartholomew.

Tuesday after the Feast of Assumption B.M. [15 Aug.] came William Bonefaunt and acknowledged himself bound to Ralph Pikett in the sum of 42s.; to be paid by weekly instalments of 4s. from the Feast of St. Bartholomew up to Michaelmas, and afterwards by weekly instalments of 3s. until, &c.

Saturday after the Feast of St. Bartholomew [24 Aug.] came Thomas Pikeman and acknowledged himself bound to Roger de Paris in the sum of 48s.; to be paid a fortnight after Michaelmas.

Tuesday the Feast of Exaltation of H. Cross [14 Sept.], 22 Edward I. [A.D. 1294], came Elias de Wallingford and acknowledged himself bound to John de la Thour and Vidal de Tarremere his merchant in the sum of 60s.; to be paid in the octave of Michaelmas.

Monday before Michaelmas Day came Laurence Bollock and acknowledged himself bound to Peter Simon de Burdeus in the sum of £8; to be paid in the octave of Michaelmas.

(Friday after the Feast of St. Edmund, K., anno 23 Edward I., came the said Peter and acknowledged satisfaction. The recognizance is therefore cancelled.)

Thursday the morrow of St. Edward [13 Oct.] came Nicholas de Hodesdone, baker, John of the Chamber, clerk, and William Box, corder, and acknowledged themselves bound to Thomas Deuteyt, taverner, in the sum of 1 mark; to be paid at Christmas, &c.

The following day came Thomas de Hales and acknowledged himself bound to Alan de Castello in the sum of 100s.; to be paid at Easter, &c.

Friday after the Feast of All Saints [1 Nov.], 22 Edward I. [A.D. 1294], came Stephen de Paris, draper, and acknowledged himself bound to Hugh de Fromound de Brucelle in the sum of £24; to be paid, viz., one moiety on Sunday after the Feast of St. Martin and the other at Christmas, &c. And be it remembered that as soon as the said Hugh shall have been fully paid two letters obligatory for the sum of £73 13s. 4d. shall be made void.

Wednesday before the Feast of St. Martin [11 Nov.], 22 Edward I. [A.D. 1294], came Thomas de Bykenore, potter, and acknowledged himself bound to Godschal de Udendale in the sum of £4; to be paid by two annual instalments at Michaelmas. Out of the last payment Nicholas Pikot to receive 5s. The creditor appoints Richard de Caumpes his attorney to act in his absence.

(Afterwards, viz., on Friday after the Feast of St. Edmund, anno 31 Edward I., the said Godschal came and acknowledged satisfaction. It is therefore cancelled.)

[A.D. 1294-5], came Reginald de Frowick, goldsmith, and John Matefrey and acknowledged themselves bound to Isabella, wife of Adam de St. Alban, junior, ironmonger, in the sum of £28; to be paid, viz., £10 at Midsummer and Christmas, and £8 at the following Midsummer.

Thursday the Feast of St. Hillary [13 Jan.] came John le Murager, John le Eskot, [and] Geoffrey de Helwethon, executors of Robert le Eskot, before John de Canterbury and acknowledged themselves bound to Elias Berran in the sum of 51s. 8d.; to be paid, viz., 2 marks at the Purification, and the balance at Midsummer.

Wednesday after the Feast of St. Matthias, Ap. [24 Feb.], 23 Edward I. [A.D. 1294-5], came Alan de Neuberi and acknowledged himself bound to Elias Peres and Bartholomew de Vendines, merchants of Gascony, in the sum of 10s.; to be paid at the Feast of Pentecost.

(On Monday after the octave of H. Trinity, anno 24, came Bartholomew de Vendines and on behalf of himself and his fellows acknowledged satisfaction. It is therefore cancelled.)

William le Barber de Douuegate acknowledged to the same 10s.; to be paid at the Feast of Pentecost.

The same day came Alan de Dalstone, potter, and acknowledged himself bound to William de Bettoyn in the sum of £8 10s.; to be paid fifteen weeks after Easter, &c.

Tuesday before the Feast of St. Gregory [12 March] came Gerard Bellami and acknowledged himself bound to Peter "Mounkuc" and Arnald Monader in the sum of 110s.; to be paid at Easter. The said Peter appoints Bernard "Mouncuk" his attorney.

The same day came Pentecost Russel and acknowledged himself bound to Elias Peres and Bartholomew de Vendines in the sum of 10s.; to be paid at Midsummer.

Friday after the Feast of H. Trinity [29 May], 23 Edward I. [A.D. 1295], came John le Rous, "fruter," and John le Wimpler, goldsmith, and acknowledged themselves bound to Thomas Romein in the sum of 16s. 9d.; to be paid at the Feast of St. Peter ad Vincula, &c.

The following Tuesday came Roger de Evere, "ferrun," and acknowledged himself bound to Richard de Caumpes and Hugh de Watham, clerk, executors of Alexander de Watham, in the sum of 60s.; to be paid, viz., 10s. at Midsummer, and 50s. at Michaelmas, &c.

(The said Hugh came and acknowledged for himself and his co-executors that the money had been paid. It is therefore cancelled.)

Saturday after the Feast of H. Trinity [29 May] came Richard de Enefeud, "le heymongere," and acknowledged himself bound to William de Bettoyne in the sum of 13s. 4d.; to be paid by quarterly instalments of 40d., commencing at Michaelmas.

Thursday after the octave of H. Trinity [29 May] came Orlandinus de Podio and Freduche de Ciocio before John Bretun, Warden of the City......

Friday after the Feast of St. Benedict [11 July] came John de Euerwick and acknowledged himself bound to John de Storteford in the sum of 60s.; to be paid on the Feast of St. Bartholomew.

Wednesday before the Feast of St. Peter ad Vincula [1 Aug.], 23 Edward I. [A.D. 1295], came William le Paternostrer and Beatrix his wife, who had been arrested for a trespass committed against Sir John de Metingham, a Justice of the lord the King, and acknowledged the trespass, for which they paid 10 marks, but were pardoned at the request of the Warden on condition they would not further molest the said Justice. Thereupon it was adjudged that five of the above 10 marks should be levied to the use of the Warden for the time being and the other to the use of the Sheriffs; and the said William and Beatrix are in mercy, &c. (fn. 7)

Tuesday before the Feast of St. Martin [11 Nov.], 23 Edward I. [A.D. 1295], came Adam le Auntiage, coffrer, Salomon le Cotiler, John le Coffrer, and William de Laufare, and acknowledged themselves bound to Giles le Quilter, Roger de la Vine, [and] Alexander le Coffrer, executors of John de Bockthon, in the sum of £50 10s.; to be paid, viz., £10 at Christmas, 100s. at the Purification and at Easter, and £30 10s. at Midsummer, &c.

Thursday after the Feast of St. Hillary [13 Jan.], 24 Edward I. [A.D. 1295-6], came Juliana, wife of Robert le Skot, John her son, Geoffrey de Helweton, [and] John le Murager, and acknowledged themselves bound to Peter Mounkuc, merchant, in the sum of 40s.; to be paid to the said Peter or Bernard his brother by instalments of 13s. 4d. at the Purification, at Midsummer, and at the Feast of All Saints.

Monday before the Conversion of St. Paul [25 Jan.] came John de Wodeford, "pessoner," Robert Treyere, and Robert Derman, and acknowledged themselves bound to Alexander Punge in the sum of 5 marks, which the aforesaid John had received from the said Alexander on taking William his son for apprentice, who is now released from his term; to be paid at Easter.

The same day came John de St. Saviour and acknowledged himself bound to the above William in the sum of £6; to be paid, viz., 40s. at Easter, 30s. at Midsummer and Michaelmas, and 20s. at Christmas.

The following Thursday came Robert le Haltrere (fn. 8) and acknowledged himself bound to William, Vicar of the Church of St. Laurence, Jewry, attorney and proctor of the scholars of "Ballol," Oxford, (fn. 9) in the sum of 16s.; to be paid, viz., one moiety at Hokeday and the other at Midsummer.

[A.D. 1295-6], came John Cole, draper, and acknowledged himself bound to Matilda, widow of Ralph le Blound, and William de Bettoyne, executors of the said Ralph, in the sum of £70; to be paid, viz., £10 at Whitsuntide and Midsummer, £20 at Michaelmas and Christmas, and £10 at Easter, &c.

The same day came William de Bassieshawe and acknowledged himself bound to the above William Sauvage in the sum of 24s.; to be paid a fortnight after Michaelmas.

Monday after the Feast of St. James, Ap. [25 July], came Hugh Pope before the Warden and Aldermen and acknowledged himself bound to Henry Berri in the sum of 33s. 4d.; to be paid on St. Edward's Day next.

Tuesday before the Feast of St. Peter in Cathedra [22 Feb.], 24 Edward I. [A.D. 1295-6], came John le Balauncer and acknowledged himself bound to Matthew Flambard in the sum of £4; to be paid to the said Matthew, or to his attorney bearing the tally of this debt, at Christmas next. The tally to be void on payment.

(On Monday before the Feast of St. Edward [18 March], 25 Edward I. [A.D. 1296-7], the said Matthew appoints William de Leyham, tailor, his attorney to receive the money.)

Thursday after the Feast of St. Katherine [25 Nov.], 25 Edward I. [A.D. 1296], came Hugh Skot and acknowledged himself bound to William de Waltham in the sum of 50s.; to be paid, viz., 10s. at Christmas, and 40s. at the Purification.

Monday after the Feast of Conception B.M. [8 Dec.], 25 Edward I. [A.D. 1296], came William de Horsham and acknowledged himself bound to Stephen Eswy in the sum of 49s.; to be paid at the Purification.

(Friday after the Purification the said Stephen came and acknowledged satisfaction. It is therefore cancelled.)

Tuesday before the Feast of St. Nicholas [6 Dec.], 25 Edward I. [A.D. 1296], came Richard Osser, "tannur," and Robert de Padinton and acknowledged themselves bound to "Hardmot," merchant of Almaine, in the sum of £4 8s.; to be paid to him or to Richard de Caumpes his attorney, viz., 8s. on Christmas Eve, and 20s. at the four following quarter days.

Saturday the morrow of the Conversion of St. Paul [25 Jan.], 25 Edward I. [A.D. 1296-7], came William de Evere, late valet of Robert de Evere, and acknowledged himself bound to "Hardmod," merchant of Almaine, in the sum of £6 14s.; to be paid to him or to Richard de Caumpes his attorney, viz., £4 on Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, and the rest at the Feast of Pentecost, &c.

The same day came Agnes de Writele and Robert de Fingerie, executors of John de Writele, and acknowledged themselves bound to "Harmod," merchant of Almaine, in the sum of £6; to be paid by quarterly instalments of 20s. to him or his aforesaid attorney.

[A.D. 1297], came Walkelin de Waledene, John his son, and John Besaunt of London, and acknowledged themselves bound to Johanna, relict of Reginald le Chaundeler, in the sum of £9; to be paid by quarterly instalments of 7s. 6d., commencing at Midsummer, until, &c.

The following day came Richard de Maran, "tannur," and acknowledged himself bound to Richard de Hakene and Hugh de Badewe in the sum of £8 10s.; to be paid at Michaelmas.

Saturday after the Feast of St. Mark [25 April], 25 Edward I. [A.D. 1297], came Simon de Paris, Nicholas Pikot, and Ralph Godchep, "mercers," in the presence of Salomon le Cotiler, Alderman, (fn. 10) and acknowledged themselves bound to John le Blound and William de Bettoyne in the sum of £7 6s. 8d.; to be paid about the Feast of H. Trinity, and unless, &c.

(On Saturday after the Feast of St. Barnabas the said Simon, Nicholas, and Ralph came and paid the debt. It is therefore cancelled.)

Saturday after the Feast of St. Barnabas [11 June] came Gilbert le Mareschal and William Amis, and in the presence of Sirs John de Banquell, John le Blound, Nicholas de Farndone, Richard de Gloucester, and William de Bettoyne acknowledged themselves bound to Peter Mounkuck and Bernard his brother in the sum of £37 10s., to be paid at the Feast of St. Edward; and the said Peter and Bernard appoint Bidau Manent or Bydau de Maderes their attorney, and in their absence Geoffrey Segyn.

Saturday before the Feast of Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr [7 July] came Peter de Heggesete, apothecary, and acknowledged himself bound to Richard Golde, taverner, in the sum of 33s. 4d.; to be paid, viz., 10s. at Michaelmas and Christmas, and 13s. 4d. at Easter following. And be it known that the said Richard has a writing obligatory for the debt, which writing will be void on payment of the debt.

[A.D. 1297], came John le Mareschal de Walebrock and acknowledged himself bound to Mabel, widow and executrix of Roger the Shearman (retonsoris) of Bredstrate, in the sum of 7 marks; to be paid, viz., 20s. at the four quarters, commencing at Michaelmas, and 13s. 4d. at the following Michaelmas.

Friday before the Feast of St. Edward, K. [13 Oct.], came Nicholas le Flauner, pepperer, and acknowledged himself bound to William de Garthone in the sum of 10s.; to be paid by quarterly instalments of 10d., commencing at Christmas. For John atte Boch, goldsmith, in prison.

The same day came Thomas le Noble and acknowledged himself bound to William de Garthone in the sum of 10s.; to be repaid as above.
