In 1276 the Preaching (or Black) Friars had removed from their house near Holborn and settled in the Ward of Castle Baynard; and in July of that year the King had called upon the citizens to devote a portion of their murage dues to perfecting the City wall near their house. Three years later a similar appropriation took place, so that the City in general reaped, for a time, but little benefit from murage. Nevertheless, the wall still remained unfinished. 'Chron.
