MS: F, ff. 262v–263. Rubric: Confederatio Sancti Victoris Paris' et Westmonasterii. Clxj.

Date: Apparently issued during a vacancy at Westminster. Stylistically, it appears to date from late 12C. The vacancy therefore either that between d. of Laurence, 10/11 April 1173 and election of Walter, post 8 July 1175, or that between d. of Walter, 27 Sept. 1190, and election of William Postard, 9 Oct. 1191 (Heads, 77). It is unlikely that Westminster would have entered into confraternity with St Victor post 1204.

Note: The obituary list of St Victor includes members of the Order of Sempringham, and some individual clerics in England, but makes no mention of the convent of Westminster, nor of any of the abbey's personnel, either under 1 May or any other day of the year (Obituaires de la Province de Sens, tome I (Dioceses de Sens et de Paris), ed. A. Molinier (Recueil des Historiens de la France, Academie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, Paris, 1902), (i), 531–608; cf. Repertoire des Documents Necrologiques Français, ed. P. Marot avec J.-L. Le Maitre (Recueil des Historiens de la France, Academie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres I, Paris, 1980, 591–4). Abbot Laurence of Westminster has been suggested as the author of a report of lectures given by Hugh of St Victor, while the title magister, ascribed to him by St Bernard, implies that he taught in the schools (F. E. Croydon, 'Abbot Laurence of Westminster and Hugh of St Victor', Medieval and Renaissance Studies II, ed. R. Hunt and R. Klibansky (1950), 169–71; cf. Flete, 91). Laurence, when abbot of Westminster, wrote to his kinsman, Abbot Ervisius (? Hervey) of St Victor, commending to him a certain John, a kinsman of the prior of Westminster, who wanted to study in the schools (PL 196, col. 1385, no. VII). A similar letter, written c. 1166, commended Laurence's own nephew, another John (Croydon, 'Abbot Laurence', 170). The unsatisfactory Ervisius was reputedly English (Fourrier Bonnard, Histoire de . . . St Victor de Paris (Paris, 1904–8), 1,227; PL 196, col. xiv), and numerous English exiles were at his abbey during the Becket dispute (PL 196, col. xv). The confraternity agreement was prob. made during the vacancy following Laurence's d., and perhaps negotiated by one or other of his protégés commended to the abbey of St Victor.

401. Notification by Walter [of Coutances], abp. of Rouen, of his grant of an indulgence of twenty days, with participation in the prayers and spiritual benefits of the church of Rouen, to all those who visit the abbey at Christmas, Easter, Ascension and Pentecost; at the Feast of the Holy Relics, on all feasts of St Peter and of all the Apostles, and on the two feasts of Blessed Edward, king and confessor. [Nov. 1184 × 16 Nov. 1207 (? Oct. 1191 × ante 25 Dec. 1193)]

Date: Walter's term of office (Gams, 640) but papal confirmation of his elevation was received at Rouen only on 3 March 1185, and he was still styled bp. Lincoln at Christmas 1184 (Fasti III, 2). Note: Brungar the champion was perhaps a professional duellist, employed in judicial duels (cf. The Treatise on the laws and customs of the realm of England commonly called Glanvill ed. G. D. G. Hall (1965), 23–5, 28).

The prior gave John a gersum of five marks (£3. 6s. 8d.). [Temp. John]

MS: WAD, f. 556. Rubric: Carta Johannis filii Edwardi de uno mesuagio in Westmonasterio.

Date: John succeeded his father some time before 30 Oct. 1197 (Fines 9 Ric. I, 55, no. 79; cal. Fines London and Mddx, I, no. 10). The attestation of Theobald of Feering, as seneschal, indicates a date within the abbacy of William Postard. The absence of the official titles of William of Ely and Robert Mauduit is not significant, since this text is not the original.

410. Confirmation by Richard son of Ranulf to the Lady Altar of Westminster of 4d. rent, which John son of Edward the reeve rendered him for two acres, with all liberties, free customs, reliefs or escheats due to Richard or his heirs. [Early 13C]

411. Quitclaim by Simon of the Gaol to the Blessed Virgin and the church of St Peter of Westminster of his whole land in the vill of Westminster, lying between the land of Randulf Siket and that of Reginald carpenter, to provide lights for the Lady Altar. The proctor of this altar is to render 1s. annually to the custodian of the anniversary of Edward, formerly reeve of Westminster. In return for this quitclaim and charter, Simon received 5 marks (£3. 6s. 8d.) from Robert of Moulsham, precentor and proctor of the altar. [Oct. 1197 × c. 1200]

Date: The second witn. is prob. the Mr John of London who became a canon of St Paul's 1201 × 1203, and d. prob. ante May 1212 (Fasti I, 46).

Note: Stephen son of Osbert confirmed this grant temp. Abbot William d'Humez (WAM 17439; WAD, ff. 349v–350), and about the same time, made a further grant of 8s. rent in Tothill (WAM 17319; WAD, f. 350).

The dating of Stephen's confirmation suggests that Mr Simon was father of the Walter Niger, alias of London, canon of St Paul's in the 1230s (Fasti I, 76).

432. Confirmation to the Lady Altar by Laurence Muschet, for his soul, and those of his parents and ancestors, of a rent of 6d., payable to the proctor, from the tenement which he holds of Roger Paschar' in the vill of Westminster, from a curtilage pertaining to that tenement. [Temp. John]

437. Notification by Marwanna daughter of William, that she has sold to William of Ely, the king's treasurer, for two marks (£1. 6s. 8d.), her messuage at Endiff [in Westminster], adjacent to that of John Pymerich. She has done this at the petition, and with the assent, of her son William, as she was seized of that messuage by right and inheritance. William had never had seisin of it, even though he and his wife Alice might dwell there at Marwanna's pleasure, so that neither William nor any heir of his may claim right in that messuage. Marwanna and William warrant this sale to the treasurer and his heir or assign. In return, he gave £1 to William and 1s. to Alice, who witnessed and assented to the sale, and confirmed that she had no dower rights in that messuage, her dower comprising only onethird of his acquisitions and a gold ring. Halimote, Westminster [c. 1196 × 1212]

438. Acknowledgement by William, son of Absalon and Marwenna, together with his wife Alice, that he was present at the sale which Marwenna made to the king's treasurer, William of Ely, of her messuage, saving the service due. It is next to the messuage of John Pimerics, which he has at Endiff; of which messuage Marwenna was seized as her right and inheritance, when she sold it. William was never seised of that messuage, although he and Alice lodged there at his mother's pleasure. William and his wife assented to the sale, which he, his mother and his heirs warranted to the treasurer and his heirs. In return, the treasurer gave him £1, and 1s. to his wife, who acknowledged in the halimote that she would never claim this messuage in dower, since it formed no part of the dower assigned at her marriage. When the messuage was sold, William had no children by his wife, nor any hope of any. Halimote [Westminster], [c. 1196 × 1212]

447. Confirmation by Simon son of William of Hanslope, with the assent of Clarice his mother, to Lucy, widow of Richard of Barking, of all his land in the vill of Westminster, in Tothill Street and the curtilage adjoining it, which is of the fee of Avice of Longditch, namely the land formerly belonging to Geoffrey the priest of Tothill, which William of Hanslope held of John son of Edward, as half a messuage and lying between the land of Wlveva the laundress and that of Adam of Sunbury. Simon has restored to Lucy the charters concerning that land. Lucy will render 1 lb cumin annually to Simon, and 2s. 6d. to John Fitz Edward as chief lord of the fee, for the curtilage, concerning which Simon has restored the cirograph to Lucy, who will also provide for the abbot, one day in the year, a man to cut hay or gather fodder. Dislodgement prohibited. Lucy may designate as her heir any man or woman she chooses. Gersum of 6 marks (£4). [Temp. John]

Gersum of six marks (£4). [Temp. John]
