Footnotes

  • 1. For the reason for the entry of outgoing carts and horses in the account see above p. xliv.
  • 2. For this and for similar entries below, the valuation applies only to the goods listed after the semicolon.
  • 3. The tallow fat was melted in a pot and skimmed to remove impurities. It was then emptied through a sieve into a tub and was ready for use after standing for three hours (R. Monier-Williams, The Tallow Chandlers of London (1970), I, 35–6).
  • 4. An esquire of the household, born in Genoa and granted letters of denization in 1475 (C.P.R. 1467–77, 518).
  • 5. Probably a mistake for alien, see 4 above.
  • 6. Hereafter this is calendared simply as 'of Guipúzcoa'. In December 1474, in compensation for losses sustained from English attacks, Guipiizcoan merchants were granted 11,000 crowns (less 600 already paid) to be acquired by retaining half the customs chargeable on their goods in English ports. And in August 1476 this grant was amended to include the goods of all merchants of Castile and Léon in London, Sandwich, Southampton and Bristol (C.P.R. 1467–77, 480, 600).
