Sir Gilbert Dethick, Garter King of Arms; William Flower, Norroy King of Arms; John Cooke, Lancaster Herald; and Edmund Knight, Chester Herald were exonerated by virtue of letters patent of 4 June 1549 and writ from the queen to the treasurer and barons of the exchequer dated 1 July 1581 (E.359/52, r. 14). 'Herald' is written in the margin next to each of these names.
  • 2. E.359/52, r. 14 gives Bartholomew as first name.
  • 3. Mowse was exonerated from payment by process; as rector of East Dereham in the diocese of Norwich he paid towards the clerical subsidy more than his assessment for the lay subsidy (E.359/52, r. 14).
  • 4. Stanhope was exonerated on the same basis as Dr. Mowse, above. Stanhope was prebendary of the prebend of Botevant in the cathedral church of York (E.359/52, r. 14).
