Footnotes

  • 1. E.359/44, r. 19 gives surname as Tomer.
  • 2. Anthony James swore before the barons that the value of his goods and chattels at the time of taxation did not exceed £50. The barons discharged him and the collectors of 50s. of the 100s. assessed on him (E.159/321, communia Easter 34 Hen. VIII, r. 66).
  • 3. E.359/44, r. 19 gives William as first name.
  • 4. The enrolled accounts mistakenly give £10 as the assessment in Broad Street ward and £10 6d. as the payment in the king's household (E.359/44, r. 19).
  • 5. Sir Brian Tuke claimed that whereas subsidy commissioners living within the limits of their commissions should be assessed there and whereas he was a commissioner for Essex and had a residence there he should not be assessed in London. The barons discharged him in London on payment of an assessment of £16 13s. 4d. in Essex (E.159/321, communia Trinity 34 Hen. VIII, r. 25).
