  • 2. A common name. A William Cox was rector of St Margaret New Fish Street 1472–1512, when he died (Hennessy, p 275) but another priest of this name was admitted in 1474 (159).
  • 3. Several clerks or conducts of this name are noted in Baillie, Biographical Notes. The identifications offered there are speculative.
  • 4. A John Tuke is noted as a clerk of the second form from Michaelmas 1486 to 21 December 1492 and master of the choristers and organ player at St George's Chapel, Windsor. See R Bowers, Lists of Windsor personnel deposited at St George's Chapel Archives.
  • 5. Among deaths for 1509 (492). Probably the John Cross of St Margaret Westminster whose wife is mentioned as the recipient of wages for washing the church's linen and vestments in the churchwardens' accounts from 1500–6 (Westminster City Archives: E1 (microfilm), pp 422, 452, 488 and 514). This was a traditional task of the parish clerk or his wife.
  • 6. Junior master and parish clerk of St Bride in 1503 (412). It is unlikely that the John Burbridge (Burbrig) who was clerk of St Andrew Hubbard in 1523–5 is the same man (contra Baillie, Biographical Notes) although he might be related.
  • 7. Among deaths for 1504 (431). John Wryth, Garter King of Arms, who requested burial in the choir of St Giles Cripplegate with his late wife Elinor by his will of 30 March, proved 30 April, 1504 (PROB 11/14. f. 71v). Clerks (i.e. parish clerks) who attended his funeral were to be paid 'after the rate', namely the rate set by their Fraternity of St Nicholas. On the fees charged under the ordinances of 1553, see Christie, pp 149–50. Elinor was admitted with him in 1487 (281).
  • 8. Thomas Holme, Kt, Clarenceux King of Arms, who granted arms to the parish clerks' fraternity in 1482. See FW Steer, The Armorial Bearings of the Worshipful Company of Parish Clerks of London, (privately printed, 1975), p 1. The grant is in the Museum of London. Holme's death is not recorded on BR.
  • 9. Among deaths for 1487 (285). Robert Drope, master of the Drapers 1477 and 1482; alderman 1468–87, mayor 1474 (Beaven, II, 13; Thrupp, p 337). By his will (codicil 19 June) proved 19 October 1487 he requested burial in the tomb he had erected in the choir of St Michael Cornhill and left 20s to the parish clerks' frater- nity (PROB 11/8, f. 32r).
  • 10. A Henry Mayre (Mayour) was admitted to the Scriveners' fraternity in 1481, served as clerk and beadle of the Goldsmiths in 1486–92 and of the Merchant Taylors from 1493 until after 1512. See M Davies The Merchant Taylors' Company of London: Court Minutes 1486–1493 (2000), pp 10–2.
  • 11. Among deaths for 1498 (368). Probably the Thomas Parker, citizen and leath- erseller, of St Olave, Southwark whose wife Agnes is described as deceased in his will of 30 November, proved 13 December, 1497 (PROB 11/7, f. 127v). An Agnes Parker was also admitted in 1487 and is among deaths for 1498 (281, 369). Parker had however, married another wife Elizabeth by the time his will was drawn up.
  • 12. Among deaths for 1501 (396). Probably the Thomas Garnet, citizen and armourer, of London who requested burial in the church of St Mary Magdalene, Southwark, by his will of 27 September, proved 14 October, 1500 (London Metropolitan Archives: DW/PA/7/2, f. 71r). His wife Elizabeth is mentioned there and an Eliza- beth Garnet was admitted with Thomas below (281).
  • 13. Among deaths for 1499 (377). Probably the Henry Sherwood, citizen and fuller, who requested burial in the church of St Swithin by London Stone and was born in Saffron Walden, Essex. He left a will of 30 July 1498 (Guildhall MS 9171 8. f. 187v) and probate was granted to his widow Alice later that year (Guildhall MS 9168/1, f. 79v). An Alice Sherwood (Scherewode) was admitted with Henry above (281).
  • 14. Among deaths for 1511 (518). Perhaps the Henry Front (Fronte/Frounte) of St Olave Silver Street whose will was proved on 26 May 1511 (Guildhall MS 9168/3, f. 52r).
  • 15. Among deaths for 1507 (467). He was churchwarden of St Mary at Hill in 1492–3. See H Littlehales, The medieval records of a London city church, Early English Text Society (1905), p 182. A citizen and fishmonger, Howting requested burial in the above church within the chapel of St Katherine by his will of 17 August, proved 3 September, 1506 (PROB 11/15, f. 99v). His wife Margaret, mentioned there, was admitted with him in 1487 (281).
  • 16. Among deaths for 1491 (314). Probably the Thomas March who requested burial in the church of St Mary Magdalene, Southwark by his will (no date of probate) of 8 January 1490 (PROB 11/8, f. 217r). His wife Elizabeth is mentioned there and an Elizabeth March was admitted with Thomas in 1487 (281).
  • 17. Among deaths (as Wesbery) for 1488 (293). Probably the David Westbury, citizen and woodmonger, who requested burial close to his wife in the church of St Andrew Hubbard by his will of 2 January, proved 23 January, 1488 (Guildhall MS 9171/7, f. 106v).
  • 18. Among deaths (as Peparde) for 1504 (431). Presumably the William Pippard, waxchandler, of St Lawrence Jewry who died before 2 May 1504 and whose widow Elizabeth renounced the administration of his will (Guildhall MS 9168/2, f. 17v). See Elizabeth Pippard below (281).
  • 19. The title is incorrect, as there is one unmarried woman, Margaret Marshall, among the wives of the laity listed below.

This is the Dame Margaret Alley (Halley) who, after the death of her previous husband Clement Lyffyn in 1450 (29) married Richard Alley, alderman and skinner and subsequently Adam Castlehill. By her will of 23 June, proved 28 November, 1486 she requested burial with Lyffyn in the Lady chapel of St Michael Cornhill and left 6s 8d to the parish clerks' and Pappey frater- nities respectively (Guildhall MS 9171/7, f. 60r).
  • 21. Elizabeth, wife of Sir Thomas Holme, also admitted in 1487 (280). She acted as executrix of his will and was granted probate on 10 June 1494 (PROB 11/10, f. 69v).

  • 32. Probably the Robert March who requested burial before the altar of St Anne in St Mary Magdalene, Southwark with his late wife by his will of 2 February, proved 14 February, 1487 (PROB 11/8, f. 2v). His son Thomas is mentioned there and one of this name is among admissions above (280).
  • 33. A blacksmith and common councilman (Tucker); he requested burial within the church of St Sepulchre by his will of 31 May, proved 4 July, 1487 (PROB 11/8, f. 23v). Clampard's wife Elizabeth is mentioned there and an Elizabeth Clampard is among admissions for 1486 (271).

  • 38. A Thomas Fairfax who requested burial in the church of St Mary Woolnoth left a will of 1 October, proved 7 October, 1490 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 10r) but there is no indication as to his occupation.

By his will of 27 May, proved 2 July, 1499, he requested burial in the church of St Michael Crooked Lane (PROB 11/11, f. 286v). His wife Katherine was admitted with him below (292).

Probably the Thomas Spence, citizen and stockfish- monger, who requested burial in the church of St Michael Crooked Lane by his will of 9 June, proved 16 July, 1503 (PROB 11/13, f. 193v). His wife Elizabeth is mentioned there, and an Elizabeth Spence (Spens) was admitted with Thomas below (292).
  • 43. Among deaths for 1491 (314). William Wilkins, citizen and brewer, who requested burial in the church of St Martin Orgar, with his late wife Alice, by his will of 16 November, proved 17 December, 1490. (PROB 11/8, f. 287v). He bequeathed 6s 8d to the parish clerks' fraternity to pray for his soul. Alice was admitted with him below (292).

  • 47. Thomas Creymer, a draper, who married Joan, widow of William Heryot, alderman and draper (Thrupp, p 349, sub Heryot). His future wife Joan along with her first husband's brothers Edward and John Finkell and other Finkells were all admitted in 1488 (290, 292).
  • 48. Among deaths for 1517 (577). John Hawes (Hawys), master of the Mercers 1502, 1510, alderman 1501–10 (Beaven, II, 20). He requested burial in the church of St Thomas of Acon with his late wife Margaret if he died in London by his will of 28 August 1516, proved 18 May 1517, and left 40s to the parish clerks' and Pappey fraternities respectively (PROB 11/18, f. 240r).
  • 49. Among deaths for 1499 (377). Kitchin was junior master of the Carpenters in 1489 and 1490 and requested burial in St Andrew Undershaft by his will of 3 September 1496, proved 28 November 1498 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 192v).
  • 50. Elizabeth Fitzjohn, wife of Thomas Fitzjohn, master in 1479 (204) and parish clerk of St Stephen Coleman Street who is mentioned in his will of 20 February 1498 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 214v). She apparently succeeded Margery Fitzjohn, among the clerks' wives admitted in 1479 (206), and perhaps Margaret Fitzjohn who is among deaths for 1488 (293).
  • 51. Widow of William Heryot, alderman and draper. She later married Thomas Creymer (Creyme) above (290). See Thrupp, p 349.

  • 53. Joan Test, widow of Sir Robert Test (169) requested burial with him in the church of All Hallows Staining (although she was lately of St Gabriel Fenchurch Street) by her will of 16 January, proved 31 October, 1487. Their joint monument was erected there (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 204). Her admission on BR is apparently a posthumous one.

  • 58. Presumably the Julian Whaplode who is mentioned as the wife (in 1477) and exec- utrix (in 1480) of Richard Whaplode in his will (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 308v). He appears among admissions for 1457 (51) and deaths for 1481 (229). She apparently succeeded Joan Whaplode, who is among admissions for 1457 (52) as a later wife of Richard. Julian is also mentioned as the mother-in-law of Robert Swayne, also among deaths for 1488 below (293) in his will of 9 June, proved 17 June, 1488, where he requested burial next to her in the porch of St Margaret Fish Street Hill (Guildhall MS 9171/7, f. 127v).
  • 59. A William Driver requested burial in the sepulchre of St Dunstan, Stepney, Middlesex, by his will of 14 September, proved 28 November, 1487 (Guildhall MS 9171/7, f. 117v). Among his children was a son Thomas and a Thomas Driver is among admissions for 1482 (234).
  • 60. William Randall appears as parish clerk of St Anne and St Agnes from 1480 (Mc Murray, Index).
  • 61. Perhaps the William Park who was master of the choristers of the Lady chapel choir at Westminster Abbey between 1491 and 1497 (Westminster Abbey Muniments 19102–7). See F Kisby, 'Music and Musicians of Early Tudor Westminster', Early Music (May 1995), p 236.
  • 62. Richard Gardener, mercer; mayor and MP London 1478; alderman 1469–90, when he died (Beaven, II, 14; Thrupp, p 344). By his will of 1 April 1488, proved 4 February 1490, he requested burial in the Lady chapel of St Pancras Soper Lane (PROB 11/8, f. 277r) where his monument was erected (Stow, Survey, ed Kings- ford, I, 261).
  • 63. A William Granger is among deaths for 1504 (431) although another of this name was admitted in 1498 (365). Perhaps the William Granger of Stepney, Middlesex, probate of whose will was granted to his widow Margaret on 16 July 1504 (Guild- hall MS 9168/2, f. 55v). A Margaret Granger was admitted with William in 1489 (298).
  • 64. Among deaths for 1499 (377). Presumably the Henry Waite (Wayte), citizen, mercer and merchant of the Staple, who requested burial in his parish church of St Margaret Pattens by his will of 17 June, proved 16 October, 1498 (PROB 11/11, f. 156r). This mentions his wife Alice and an Alice Waite (Wayte) was also admitted in 1499 (374) when Henry's death is recorded. Among other bequests he left 5s to 'John our parish clerk' to pray for him.
  • 65. Among deaths for 1495 (345). A citizen and tailor, Kellow requested burial in the chapel of St Stephen at St Mary at Hill, and left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity by his will of 11 December 1494, proved 9 January 1495 (PROB 11/10, f. 173v).
  • 66. Probably the later wife of William Oppy, brewer and parishioner of St Magnus Martyr, who is mentioned in his will of 2 September, proved 21 September, 1496 (PROB 11/11, f. 7v). William Oppy is apparently among admissions for 1479 (181) and deaths for 1497 (361).

Perhaps the Stephen Burton, citizen and freemason, who requested burial in the church of St Michael Cornhill with his late wife Joan by his will of 30 October, proved 13 November, 1488 (PROB 11/8, f. 105r). He was active from 1442, served as a churchwarden of the above parish, and apparently specialised in making stone fireplaces from the stock described in his will.
