  • 1. Among deaths for 1515 (556). Perhaps the Richard Merry of London diocese who passed through various clerical grades in 1503–4 being ordained priest (on the title of St Mary's Hospital Bishopsgate) on 2 March 1504 (Davis, 15400).
  • 2. A Thomas Cobb (Cob) of London diocese who passed through the higher clerical grades in 1502–3 was ordained priest on 17 April 1503 on the title of Elsing Spital (Davis, 11273). Baillie, Biographical Notes, identifies him with the priest who sold a pair of organs to All Hallows London Wall c1512 and received the old organs and five marks in return, but the name is too common for certainty.
  • 3. Probably the Oliver Godfrey of London diocese who proceeded through various clerical grades in 1504–5 being ordained priest on 22 March 1505 (Davis, 15311).
  • 4. Thomas Guy was parish clerk of St Leonard Eastcheap and junior master in 1519 (590). Probably the individual of this name described as citizen, linen draper and late parish clerk of St Leonard Eastcheap, who died in 1559 (Guildhall MS 9171/14, f. 95r). He requested burial in the churchyard of St Benet Fink of which he was then a parishioner.
  • 5. A Ralph West appears as a clerk at the Chapel of St Thomas on London Bridge in 1519–20 (Baillie, Biographical Notes).
  • 6. Presumably the Sir Henry Frowyk, of Hilling, Middlesex, who left a will of 2 April 1504, proved 15 November 1505 (PROB 11/14, f. 325r) as he is the only knight of this name identifiable at the time. If so, the admission may have been a posthumous one, as it occurred around the period of his death which is not separately recorded on BR.
  • 7. Probably the Henry Walter, citizen and scrivener, who requested burial in the church of St Christopher le Stocks where his late wife Agnes was buried by his will of 27 November 1527, proved 15 January 1528 (PROB 11/22, f. 207v). He left 3s 4d for the parish clerks' fraternity to be present at his burial. Walter was also a lay brother of the Austin Friars.
  • 8. Among deaths for 1513 (540). Thomasine Percival, a Cornishwoman who married (as her third husband), John Percival, Kt, alderman and merchant taylor (Thrupp, p 360). He appears among deaths for 1504 at the end of the list of deceased laywomen (432). Thomasine requested burial within his tomb at St Mary Woolnoth by her wills of 26 March, and 4 April, proved 30 July, 1512 (PROB 11/17, f. 218r).   • 9. Probably the Thomas Marow, a lawyer, who held land in five counties and was the third son of William Marow, grocer and alderman (Thrupp, p 355). By his will of 31 March, proved 10 April, 1505, he requested burial in the church of St Botolph Bishopsgate where his father was interred (PROB 11/14, f. 221v).
  • 10. Probably the Elizabeth Brice, parishioner of St Mary Woolnoth and widow of Hugh Brice, Kt and alderman, who died in 1496 and was buried in this church (Beaven, II, 15; Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 205). Her will was proved 16 November 1504 (Guildhall MS 9168/2, f. 39v). She was a native of Ruston, Yorks (Thrupp, p 326).
  • 11. A Joan Soper, parishioner of St Benet Gracechurch, is noted in the act book of the London commissary court among testamentary business for 1505 (Guildhall MS 9168/2, f. 47v).
  • 12. An error for 'Rogeri'.

  • 14. William Marchant's admission is not recorded. Baillie, Biographical Notes, identi- fies him with the chorister of St George's Windsor of this name who resigned on 16 June 1472 (St George's Chapel Archives: treasurer's roll xv. 34.56 and attendance book v. B.2) but this is no more than a possibility.
  • 15. Probably the Richard Hayward who was sub-prior of St Mary Overy, Southwark, in 1501 (VCH Surrey, II, 110).
  • 16. Presumably the Thomas Brown among deaths for 1514 (546) and perhaps identifi- able as the monk of Westminster Abbey with this name who was admitted there in the year Michaelmas 1485–6 and who died in 1513–4 (Pearce, p 171).
  • 17. Perhaps the Thomas Stowell, monk of Westminster Abbey (admitted there in the year Michaelmas 1498–9, first mass 1500–1) who is last noted in 1515–6. See Pearce, p 177.
  • 18. Among deaths for 1516 (565). Presumably the John Young DCL, who was arch- bishop's chancellor in 1507, Master of the Rolls 1508–16 and Dean of York 1514–6, who died in London 25 April 1516 of the sweating sickness. He was also rector of St Mary le Bow 1504–14 (DNB; Emden, BRUO to 1500). In his will of 25 April, proved 17 May, 1516, he asked for burial in the Rolls Chapel and construction of a tomb there (PROB 11/18, f. 132r) where his effigy by Torrigiano still survives.
  • 19. Among deaths for 1509 (491). Perhaps the John Smith (Smyth) DTh, formerly fellow of Pembroke Hall, Cambridge c1477–91 who was vicar of St Sepulchre by 1505 (Emden, BRUC to 1500). He requested burial in the chancel of St Sepulchre by his will of 1 May, proved 8 May, 1509 (PROB 11/16, f. 107r).
  • 20. This may be John Young, educated at Winchester College and New College, Oxford; DTh 1504; archdeacon of London 1514–26 and bishop of Gallipoli 1513–26. He served as suffragan to Bishop Fitzjames of London 1513–21 (Emden, BRUO to 1500).
  • 21. Perhaps the Thomas Ashburn who was elected master of the Hospital of St Augus- tine Pappey between 1504 and 1507 (VCH London, I, 550).
  • 22. Among deaths for 1510 (504). Presumably the John Wenlock, priest, who requested burial in the Pardon churchyard of St Paul's by his will of 19 October 1509, proved 6 March 1510 (Guildhall MS 9531/9, f. 193v).
  • 23. Among deaths for 1512 (525). Possibly the Thomas Johnson, priest serving All Hallows Bread Street, who requested burial close to St Paul's Cross by his will of 27 November, proved 11 December, 1511 (Guildhall MS 9531/9, f. 203v).
  • 24. Baillie, Biographical Notes (followed by the Biographical Dictionary of English Court Musicians) identifies him with the John Sudbery among deaths of laymen for 1520 (610), but this is an error. Lay and parish clerks are normally classified correctly in years when their deaths are separately accounted for on BR and the form Sudbery (i.e. Sudbury) is distinct from Sudborow (Sudborough). There is however, no reason to dispute that the Sudborough admitted above was the John Sydborowe, gentleman of the Chapel Royal, who was active between 1493 and 1520. He appears as a parishioner of St Mary at Hill providing dinner for other visiting gentlemen of the Chapel Royal in 1510 and helping to select a new clerk for the church in 1512–3. His presence at the Field of Cloth of Gold in June 1520 however, implies that his death could not have been recorded on BR before the year beginning Ascension Day 1521, given the normal practice from 1470 of entering deaths in the year of account after their actual occurrence.
  • 25. Possibly the Robert Hawkins who was a gentleman of the Chapel Royal by 1509 and who was still in post in 1528. He read the gospel at the coronation of Henry VIII and was present at the Field of Cloth of Gold. See Biographical Dictionary of English Court Musicians.
  • 26. Presumably the William Crane who was a gentleman of the Chapel Royal from 1506–23 and master of the choristers there from 1523 (formally appointed in 1526). He died on 7 July 1545 (Abstracts of Inquisitiones Post Mortem, I, 58) leaving exten- sive property in the City and in Kent by his will of 6 July 1545 (PROB 11/31, f. 49r).   • 27. Perhaps the Matthew Dix (Dyx) who was a conduct at St Dunstan in the East where he appears in the churchwardens' accounts for 1503–5 (Baillie, Biographical Notes).
  • 28. Among the deaths for 1518 (587). Perhaps the John March (Marche) who was master of the choristers at St Anthony's Hospital in 1495 and 1509–10 (St George's Chapel Windsor Archives: treasurer's rolls xv.37.8 and 27). See Baillie, Biograph- ical Notes.
  • 29. Thomas Nightingale was parish clerk of St Lawrence Jewry and senior master in 1516 (561).
  • 30. Senior master in 1513 (530) when he was parish clerk of St Dunstan in the East and master again in 1522 (Christie, p 76). James How may also have acted as a conduct at St Margaret Pattens in 1520, where one of this name kept 'Jhesus masse and antems' with another outsider, Richard Griffiths (Baillie, Biographical Notes).
  • 31. Probate of the will of a Michael Mowforth, pauper, of St Botolph Aldgate was granted to Alice Mowforth on 19 April [1521] (Guildhall MS 9168/7, f. 30r).
  • 32. Probably the William Farthing who was a member of Lady Margaret Beaufort's chapel prior to 1507 (Biographical Dictionary of English Court Musicians). The suggestion there that he is also identifiable with the Thomas Farthing who was active as a gentleman of the Chapel Royal between 1511–20 is much more ques- tionable, although mistakes over Christian names in such lists are not unknown.

  • 34. Among deaths for 1509 (493). James Vyall, esquire, requested burial before the altar in the Lady chapel of St Lawrence Jewry by his will of 21 April, proved 26 October, 1508 (PROB 11/16, f. 45r).
  • 35. Among deaths (as Hugh Kaye) for 1512 (450). Probate of the will of a Hugh Kay (Key) of St Botolph Bishopsgate was granted on 28 April 1512 to his widow 'Elena' (Guildhall MS 9168/3, f. 71v) and a Helen Kay was admitted with Hugh above (451).
  • 36. A Robert Hastings (Hastynge), citizen and parishioner of St Andrew Undershaft, requested burial in his parish church by his will of 3 September 1508, proved 23 January 1509 (PROB 11/16, f. 72r). His wife is named there as Elizabeth, and an Elizabeth Hastings was admitted with Robert below (451).
  • 37. Possibly the same Robert Fenrother who was admitted in 1511 (513).
  • 38. Presumably the William Brocket (Broket), citizen and goldsmith, who asked for burial in the middle aisle of the nave at St Peter Cheap by his will of 31 October, proved 25 November, 1536 (PROB 11/25, f. 312r). He left 5s to the Pappey frater- nity and the parish clerks' fraternity respectively for coming to his burial. In 1529–30 he served as warden of the guild of the Holy Name of Jesus based at the Shrouds Chapel in St Paul's. Further biographical information is in the appendices to New, Cult of the Holy Name of Jesus.

  • 40. Bartholomew Reed (Rede) was prime warden of the Goldsmiths in 1492, alderman 1498–1505 and mayor 1502; Kt 1503 (Beaven, II, 19; Thrupp, p 363). He requested burial in the cloister of the London Charterhouse and left 8d to any parish clerk helping to bring him to burial by his will of 19 October, proved 26 November, 1505 (PROB 11/14, f. 313v). His wife Elizabeth was admitted in 1510 (502).
  • 41. Probably the William Salford, citizen and mercer, who was a merchant of the Staple. He requested burial next to his late wife Elyn in the chapel of St Stephen and St Nicholas at the church of St Thomas the Apostle by his will of 31 March, proved 26 August, 1505 (PROB 11/14, f. 282r). A Helen Salford is among admissions and deaths for 1502 (406, 411).
  • 42. A John Style, parishioner of St Margaret Lothbury, requested burial in the church of St Thomas of Acon if he died in London by his will of 14 July, proved 17 October, 1505 (PROB 11/14, f. 292v).
  • 43. Described as a gentleman in his will. A citizen and tailor, who requested burial in the Trinity chapel of St Botolph Billingsgate by his will of 10 November 1505, proved 27 January 1506 (PROB 11/15, f. 5v).
  • 44. Probably the John Peek (Peke), squire, who requested burial in the church of the London Charterhouse as close as possible to the place where his two late wives were buried (although he was a parishioner of St Botolph Aldersgate) by his will of 9 March, proved 27 March, 1506 (PROB 11/15, f. 38r). His current wife Elizabeth, mentioned in his will, may be the Elizabeth Peek among deaths for 1519 (601). Peek was also master of the Trinity guild at St Botolph Aldersgate in 1499–1500 (Basing, Parish Fraternity Register, 133).
  • 45. William Holt, citizen and grocer requested burial in the church of St Olave, South- wark, by his will of 1 May 1504, proved 26 August 1505, and left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity 'for there I am a brother' (PROB 11/14, f. 277v).
  • 46. James Swetman, citizen and fishmonger, requested burial at the south door of St Nicholas Cole Abbey by his will of 1 November 1505, proved 11 February 1506 (PROB 11/15, f. 22v). He also left 10s to the Pappey brotherhood and 10s to the parish clerks' fraternity to pray for his soul.
