Hugh Baillie, Biographical Notes, identifies him with the John Angell, clerk of the fraternity of St Nicholas who sang at the funeral of Sir Thomas Lovell in 1524 (Letters and Papers Foreign and Domestic of the Reign of Henry VIII, ed JS Brewer (1870), 4, 1524–6, Pt I, p 150) and (much more doubtfully) with the indi- vidual of this name who was a conduct of St Peter Cheap in 1547 and a gentleman of the Chapel Royal temp. Edward VI. Probably the John Angell who was master of the parish clerks in 1553: see EA Ebblewhite, The Parish Clerks Company (privately printed, 1932), p 16. The Biographical Dictionary of English Court Musicians confuses him with a priest of the Chapel Royal.
  • 8. Among deaths for 1519 (598), John Bate was parish clerk of St Peter Cheap, although he lived in the neighbouring parish of St Michael Wood Street. By his will of 3 August, proved 30 August, 1518, he bequeathed 12d to 'my company of St Nicholas' (Guildhall MSS 9171/9, f. 97v, 9168/6, ff. 14, 16). His wife Alice acted as his executrix and his son Alexander was a minor at the time.
  • 9. Perhaps the Thomas Fitzjohn who was mentioned as parish clerk in the church- wardens' accounts of All Hallows Staining for 1525–9 (Baillie, Biographical Notes). An earlier Thomas Fitzjohn was junior master of the fraternity in 1479 (204).

  • 13. A John Sharp is recorded as a conduct at St Margaret Pattens in 1511–2 (Baillie, Biographical Notes).
  • 14. Baillie, Biographical Notes, identifies this John Wright with the conduct of St Mary at Hill who appears in the churchwardens' accounts there between 1525 and 1527, but the name is extremely common.
  • 15. The Christian name Cyprian is highly unusual: it is shared by no other clerk on BR. Consequently this individual may be the 'Cyprian' who was conduct at St Andrew Hubbard in 1511–2 and also perhaps the organ player and vestment mender of All Hallows Staining 1515–8 mentioned in their respective churchwardens' accounts (Baillie, Biographical Notes, sub Cyprian).
  • 16. Perhaps the Robert Smith recorded on a missing leaf of BR as junior master in 1523 and parish clerk of St Olave, Southwark (Christie, p 55).

  • 18. Elizabeth, wife of John Banks, the junior master in this year (551). She survived him, acting as the executrix of his will proved on 11 May 1518 (Guildhall MS 9171/9, f. 87r).
  • 19. Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Killick (Kyllyk), parish clerk, of St Botolph Bish- opsgate, who appears among admissions for 1511 (511) and deaths for 1519 (598). He died intestate in 1518 and Elizabeth is mentioned in subsequent Commissary court proceedings providing for the compilation of an inventory of his goods (Guildhall MS 9168/6, f. 19r).
  • 20. William Blount, 4th Baron Mountjoy, who died on 8 November 1534 (see GEC Complete Peerage). He left a will of 14 October 1534, proved 11 February 1536 (PROB 11/25, f. 243r).
  • 21. Of Thaxted, Essex. Cutt requested burial in the parish church there until his own chapel was built under the terms of his will of 3 April, proved 28 June, 1521 (PROB 11/20, f. 87r). His wife Elizabeth was admitted with him below (555).
  • 22. Two knights of this name, Sir Thomas Tyrrell of Gypping, Suffolk and Sir Thomas Tyrell of Heron were created in 1513 (Shaw, Knights of England, II, 38).
  • 23. Presumably the Ralph Dodmore (Dodmor) esquire of Putney, Surrey, whose will of 3 August, was proved 3 September, 1558 (PROB 11/41, f. 6r). His wife Margaret is mentioned there and a Margaret Dodmore was admitted with Ralph in 1515 (555).
  • 24. Chicheley was apparently a parishioner of St Stephen Walbrook in 1509, later resi- dent on London Bridge 1517–25 and served as a conduct of St Mary at Hill (Baillie, Biographical Notes).
  • 25. Henry Home, citizen and grocer, who requested burial in the Lady chapel of St Sepulchre (although a parishioner of St Audoen) by his will of 12 June, proved 21 September, 1544 (PROB 11/30, f. 109v). He left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' frater- nity and the same sum to the Pappey brotherhood; also a new black gown to Robert Thompson, parish clerk of St Audoen, probably the Robert Thomson among the clerks admitted in 1514 (542).
  • 26. Probably the Innocent Austen who requested burial in the parish church of Guisnes, Pale of Calais, near to one of his late wives Margaret and Elizabeth, by his will of 13 October 1524, proved 23 May 1528 (PROB 11/22, f. 256r). A Margaret Austen (555) was admitted with Innocent.
  • 27. Among deaths for 1518 (588). A mercer, who requested burial under the cross in the Pardon churchyard of St Paul's by his will of 3 August, proved 31 August, 1517 (PROB 11/18, f. 258r). Issam also left £5 for clerks and priests to attend his burial. His wife Agnes is mentioned there and is probably the Agnes Issam admitted with John below (555).
  • 28. Baillie, Biographical Notes, identifies him with the Stephen Holt who was sexton of St Mary Magdalen Milk Street 1518–28, which is a possibility although the name is a common one. His further identification of this individual on BR with the parish clerk of St Dunstan in the West is without justification.
  • 29. Baillie, Biographical Notes, identifies him with the Thomas Man recorded as a singing man living in the parish of St Mary Aldermanbury in 1532, but the name is too common and the gap in the record too great for this to be any more than an outside possibility.
  • 30. Joan Lynde is attested as prioress of Holywell in 1515 and died in 1534 (VCH Middlesex, I, 178).
  • 31. Wife of Sir John Cutt, admitted above (554). By her will of 10 November 1523, proved 6 May 1524, she requested burial with her husband at Thaxted, Essex (PROB 11/21, f. 154r). She had previously been charged under his will (PROB 11/20, f. 87r) with establishing an almshouse for 12 bedesmen there.

  • 35. A Thomas Jakes, apparently a lawyer, requested burial in the church of the Black- friars, London, by his will of 20 January 1513, proved 8 July 1514 (PROB 11/18, f. 12v). His wife Elizabeth (formerly Frowyk) is among deaths for 1516 (569).
  • 36. William Brown, elected master of the Mercers in 1507 and 1514, alderman 1505–14 and mayor from 1513 until he died on 3 June 1514 (Beaven, II, 20–1). His parents Sir John and Dame Anne Brown, and current wife Alice are mentioned in his will of 28 May 1514 by which he requested burial within the church of St Thomas of Acon (PROB 11/17, f. 104r). A Mistress Alice Brown is among deaths below (560).
  • 37. A John Kirkby (Kirkeby), citizen and vintner, who requested burial within the church of St Magnus Martyr, left 20s for payments to priests and clerks attending his obit by his will of 24 September 1513, proved 26 November 1514 (PROB 11/17, f. 230v).
  • 38. John Tate, alderman 1485–1515, Kt 1497, MP London 1503, 1510; four times master of the Mercers (Beaven, II, 17; Thrupp, p 369). A benefactor of St Anthony's Hospital where he was buried (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 184). By his will of 3 January, proved 20 January, 1515 he left 40s to the parish clerks' fraternity 'whereof I am a brother' (PROB 11/18, f. 25r). The fraternity was to help at his dirige and funeral, with a substantial number of the fellowship being present to bear his body to burial.

A Thomas Hickman is recorded as one of the minor canons and almoner at St Paul's in 1521 although the claim that he was subdean is probably erroneous as he overlaps with Robert Ashlyn (498) who held that office. See W Sparrow Simpson, The Charter and Statutes of the College of the Minor Canons in St Paul's Cathedral (1871), p 34 and MS notes by JS Bumpus bound into the Guildhall Library copy of this work. By his will of 6 May, proved 17 June, 1534, Hickman requested burial in the chancel of St Gregory by St Paul's (PROB 11/25, f. 99r).
  • 41. The name is unusual and he is probably identifiable therefore with the Thomas Andus of Lincoln diocese who was ordained subdeacon 17 December 1513, deacon 10 March, and priest 31 March, 1514 in London diocese on the title of 'Holy Trinity' (Davis, 18914).
  • 42. A John Darley (Darlay) of York diocese was ordained subdeacon on 23 February, deacon 16 March, and priest on 30 March, 1510 in London diocese on the title of Elsing Spital (Davis, 14813).   • 48. Perhaps the Nicholas Gladwin (Gladwyn) who was a conduct of St Mary at Hill during one quarter in 1514–5 (Baillie, Biographical Notes). Baillie speculates that he is the conduct of the same name at the College of Stoke-by-Clare, Suffolk, in 1526.
  • 49. Among deaths for 1520 (609). Probably the Richard Tucker who appears as parish clerk in the churchwardens' accounts of St Dunstan in the West for 1516–8 (Baillie, Biographical Notes).
  • 50. A William Alderson is noted among the choristers of the Chapel Royal in 1509 and 1513 (Kisby, Royal Household Chapel, Appendix 1). He may however, have been too young to be admitted to the fraternity in 1516.
  • 51. A William Smith was a conduct of St Mary at Hill in 1523–4 where the name recurs as that of a singer in 1547 (Baillie, Biographical Notes).
  • 52. Michael Dormer, Kt, alderman 1531–45, mayor 1541 and master of the Mercers 1531 and 1545 (Beaven, II, 27). His monument was erected in St Lawrence Jewry (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 276) where he requested burial in the churchyard with his late wife Elizabeth by his will of 20 September, proved 2 October, 1545 (PROB 11/30, f. 291r). An Elizabeth Dormer was admitted with Michael below (564).
  • 53. Perhaps the John Park, citizen and mercer, who requested burial in the Lady chapel of St Lawrence Jewry where his mother was buried by his will of 5 April 1525, proved 24 October 1528 (PROB 11/22, f. 310v). His wife Margaret is mentioned there and a Margaret Park was admitted with John below (564).
  • 54. Among deaths for 1520 (610). Probably the John Warren, citizen and merchant taylor, who requested burial in the church or churchyard of St Lawrence Jewry by his will of 17 August 1508, proved 5 September 1519 (Guildhall MS 9171/9, f. 125r). His wife Margery, mentioned there, survived him and a Margery Warren was admitted with John below (564).
  • 55. Among deaths for 1517 (577). Presumably the William Tykul (Tykhull), gentleman, of London who requested burial in the middle of the choir of St Kath- erine Coleman by his will of 9 October 1516, proved 29 July 1517 (PROB 11/18, f. 268r). His wife Philippa, mentioned there, survived him and a Philippa Tykul (Tychull) was admitted with William below (564).
  • 56. Perhaps the Nicholas Darley, citizen and grocer, who requested burial in the cloister of the hospital of St Thomas of Acon (although a parishioner of St Mary Colechurch) in his will of 10 November 1528, proved 27 April 1529 (PROB 11/23, f. 42r). His wife Agnes is mentioned there and an Agnes Darley is among admis- sions for 1519 (596).
  • 57. Probably the William Dauntsey, master of the Mercers 1532 and alderman 1536–43, who died on 23 April 1543 (Beaven, II, 28). By his will of 5 July 1542 he requested burial close to his late wife Agnes in the chapel of St Anne within St Antholin (PROB 11/29, f. 172Ar). An Agnes Dauntsey (Dancy) was admitted with William below (564).
  • 58. A Ralph Shelton, mercer, of London, requested burial in his father's vault within the church of St Thomas of Acon by his will of 7 March, proved 5 November, 1522 (PROB 11/20, f. 89v).
  • 59. A Henry Tripshaw, citizen and barber-surgeon, requested burial in St John's chapel at St Mary Colechurch by his will of 5 June, proved 14 June, 1520 (Guildhall MS 9171/9, f. 153r).

  • 66. Probably the Robert Young, scholar of Winchester College, admitted there in 1470; scholar 1477, and fellow 1479–85, of New College, Oxford who proceeded MA by 1483–4. He was rector of St Michael Crooked Lane 1493–1515 (Emden, BRUO to 1500). By his will of 31 October, proved 7 November, 1515 (PROB 11/18, f. 90r) he requested burial in the choir of his church before the high altar.
  • 67. William Capel, Kt, alderman 1485–1515, and mayor 1503, served six times as master of the Drapers between 1487 and 1512 (Beaven, II, 18). For his family, see Thrupp, p 328. By his will of 1 September 1515, proved 7 March 1516, he requested that four [parish or choir] clerks were to be present at his funeral and 4d paid to each clerk present at his trental of diriges and masses after burial (PROB 11/18, f. 96r). He was interred in the south chapel of St Bartholomew-by-the-Exchange which he had rebuilt (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 285).
  • 68. A William Atwood (at Wood), gentleman, of London, requested burial in the church of St Botolph Aldersgate by his will of 18 February 1514, proved 2 October 1515 (PROB 11/18, f. 83v).
  • 69. Alice Josson is mentioned in the will of 28 January 1524 of John Josson, citizen and skinner, as his late wife who was buried in the church of St Antholin (PROB 11/21, f. 133r). In that year his wife was named Anne, and an Anne Josson is among admissions above (564). John is among admissions for 1508 (474).
