PRAYERS.

Bill against seditious Conventicles.

The House proceeded in Consideration of those Matters as passed in Difference on Saturday last, at the Conference between both Houses, concerning the Alterations and Provisos added to the Bill against seditious Conventicles; wherein this House agreed to many of the Alterations offered by the Commons, and added a short Preamble and Proviso to that Proviso against those People commonly called Quakers; and ORDERED, To have a Conference with the House of Commons, to communicate their Resolutions to them.

Message to H. C. for a Conference about it.

A Message was sent to the House of Commons, by Sir Thomas Bird and Sir Moundeford Brampston Knight:

To desire a present Free Conference, in the Painted Chamber, touching the Matter of the last Conference, concerning the Bill against seditious Conventicles.

The same Lords who managed the last Conference are appointed to manage this Free Conference; and to let the House of Commons know the Reasons which induced their Lordships thus to concur with the Commons.

The Messengers returned with this Answer:

Answer.

That the House of Commons will give a Free Conference, as is desired.

Then the House was adjourned during Pleasure, and the Lords went to the Conference; which being ended, the House was resumed.

Message from H. C. for another Conference on it.

A Message was brought from the House of Commons, by Sir Edmond Pooly and others:

To desire a Free Conference, touching the Subject Matter of the last Free Conference.

The Answer returned was:

Answer.

That this House will give a present Free Conference, in the Painted Chamber, as is desired.

The same Lords who managed the former Free Conference are appointed to manage this Free Conference.

The House was adjourned during Pleasure, and the Lords went to the Free Conference; which being ended, the House was resumed.

Report of the Conference.

The Earl of Anglesey reported the Effect of this Free Conference; and shewed wherein the House of Commons have agreed with their Lordships, and wherein they have made some Alterations, whereto they desire their Lordships Concurrence.

The said Alterations were read Twice, and Agreed unto by this House.

Then the House was again adjourned during Pleasure; and the Lords went into the Painted Chamber, to acquaint the Commons (who stayed for their Lordships Answer) that their Lordships do agree with them in their Alterations.

The Lords returning, the House was resumed.

Message from H. C. for another Conference on it.

A Message was brought from the House of Commons, by William Coventry Esquire and others:

To desire a Conference upon the Subject Matter of the last Conference.

The Answer returned was:

Answer.

That this House will give a present Conference, in the Painted Chamber, as is desired.

ORDERED, That the same Lords who managed the last Conferences are appointed to report this.

The House was adjourned during Pleasure, and the Lords went to the Conference; which being ended, the House was resumed.

Report of the Conference Proviso concerning the Quakers lost.

The Earl of Anglesey reported, "That the House of Commons acquainted their Lordships, at this Conference, That, since the last Free Conference, having received the Bill and the Papers touching seditious Conventicles, they looking into the said Bill, find the Proviso concerning the Quakers missing, which they conceive to be a material Part of the Bill: Therefore they desire this House, that some Way may be found to supply this Defect, whereby to prevent the losing of the said Bill."

Hereupon divers of those Lords that managed that Free Conference avowed, "That the said Proviso missing was delivered, with the Bill and other Papers, to Serjeant Charlton, at the said Conference."

This House, upon this, directed those Lords that were appointed to manage that Conference, videlicet, the Lord Treasurer, the Duke of Bucks, Earl of Bridgwater, Earl of Anglesey, Lord Mohun, and the Lord Ashley, to withdraw, and peruse the original Papers of this House out of which the said Proviso was written, and prepare a Draught of the same Proviso as it was passed this House, and present the same to their Lordships.

Their Lordships having accordingly withdrawn, the Earl of Anglesey reported, "That the Lords have prepared a Draught of the Proviso in Parchment, which hath been carefully examined with the original Papers out of which the former was written, and passed this House."

Which said Draught this House received, and read Twice, and approved thereof, as being exactly agreeable to the original Paper out of which the former was written, which was sent to the House of Commons.

As for the other Papers wherein the Amendments of the House of Commons are contained, they are in the Possession of the House of Commons.

Message to H. C. for another Conference about it.

A Message was sent to the House of Commons, by Sir Thomas Bird and Sir Justinian Lewin:

To desire a present Conference, in the Painted Chamber, touching the Matter of the last Conference.

Heads for the Conference.

The same Lords that managed the last Conference are to manage this Conference; and to let the House of Commons know, "That this Draught of the Proviso that is missing is exactly according to the original Paper which remains in this House; and to desire that they would look out their original Papers, and perfect the same, that so the said Bill may be ready for the King to give His Royal Assent thereunto." And further to let them know, "That in regard it is now late, and the King hath tarried long to put an End to this Sitting, His Majesty hath given the Houses Leave to adjourn themselves until To-morrow Morning; and then His Majesty will be here present, at Eleven of the Clock, to give His Royal Assent to those Bills which have passed both Houses, and then to make a Recess."

The Messengers return with this Answer:

Answer from H. C.

That the House of Commons will give a present Conference, as is desired.

Then the Lords went to the Conference.

Adjourn.
