King's Answer to Address relating to the Parliament office, &c.

The Lord Steward reported, "That the Lords with White Staves had (according to Order) waited on His Majesty, with the Address of this House, of the 14th Instant, to desire that His Majesty would be pleased to order the Officers of the Board of Works to repair The Parliament-office, and re-build the House belonging thereto for the Use of the Clerks; and also to give Directions, that the Copies of the Journals of this House, lodged by the late Clerk Assistant in a Room adjoining to the House for their Lordships Use, may be continued there, upon a reasonable Gratuity to be given to his Executrix for the same: And that His Majesty was pleased to say, He would give Directions accordingly."

Heron Syke to Kirkby in Kendal Road, Bill.

The Earl of Warwick reported from the Lords Committees to whom the Bill, intituled, "An Act for widening and repairing the High Road leading from Heron Syke, which divides the Counties of Lancaster and Westmorland, to the Town of Kirkby in Kendall; and from the said Town of Kirkby in Kendal through the Town of Shapp, to Emont Bridge in the said County of Westmorland," was committed: "That the Committee had considered the said Bill, and examined the Allegations thereof, which were found to be true; and that they had gone through the Bill, and directed him to report the same to the House, without any Amendment."

Burton to Derby Road, Bill.

The Earl of Warwick also reported from the Lords Committees to whom the Bill, intituled, "An Act for repairing and widening the Road from the West End of the Town of Burton upon Trent, in the County of Stafford, through the said Town, to the South End of the Town of Derby, in the County of Derby," was committed: "That the Committee had considered the said Bill, and examined the Allegations thereof, which were found to be true; and that they had gone through the Bill, and directed him to report the same to the House, without any Amendment."

Morton Pleydell, Leave for a Bill:

After reading, and considering, the Report of the Judges to whom was referred the Petition of Edmund Morton Pleydell Esquire and others; praying Leave to bring in a Private Bill:

It is Ordered, That Leave be given to bring in a Bill, pursuant to the said Petition and Report.

Hodie 1a vice lecta est Billa, intituled, "An Act for vesting the Estate of Edmund Morton Pleydell Esquire in Trustees, to settle the same, pursuant to an Agreement made previous to the Marriage of Edmund Morton Pleydell the Younger Esquire with Ann his Wife; and for other Purposes therein mentioned."

Accompt of Orphans Fund delivered.

The House being informed, "That the Chamberlain of the City of London attended:"

He was called in; and delivered, at the Bar,

"An Accompt of the Surplus of the Fund for the Relief of the Orphans and other Creditors of the City of London, at Midsummer 1752."

And then he was directed to withdraw.

And the Title thereof being read by the Clerk:

Dysart, Duty on Beer, Bill.

A Message was brought from the House of Commons, by Sir Henry Erskine and others:

With a Bill, intituled, "An Act for laying a Duty of Two Pennies Scots, or One Sixth Part of a Penny Sterling, on every Scots Pint of Ale and Beer, which shall be brewed for Sale, brought into, tapped, or sold, within the Town of Dysart and Liberties thereof, and all Places adjacent, lying within Three Hundred Yards of the Boundaries of the said Liberties, for repairing, improving, and preserving, the Harbour of the said Town;" to which they desire the Concurrence of this House.

The said Bill was read the First Time.

Quarantine Bill.

Hodie 2a vice lecta est Billa, intituled, "An Act to oblige Ships more effectually to perform their Quarantine; and for the better preventing the Plague being brought from Foreign Parts into Great Britain or Ireland, or the Isles of Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney, Sark, or Man."

Ordered, That the said Bill be committed to a Committee of the whole House, on Tuesday next.

The Duke of Newcastle acquainted the House, "That His Majesty, having been apprized of the Contents of the said Bill, was graciously pleased (so far as the Interest of the Crown is concerned) to consent that their Lordships may proceed thereupon as they shall think fit."

Motion for an Address, for Examinations taken by the Lords appointed by His Majesty, to inquire into Informations relating to a Person in the Prince of Wales's Service and others, refused.

Accordingly a Petition of the said Lady Anne Jekyll, Widow and Relict of Joseph Jekyll Esquire, deceased, for and on Behalf of Anne Jekyll, her Infant Daughter and only Child by the said Joseph Jekyll, was presented, and read; praying Leave to bring in a Bill, to vest the said Infant's Twelfth Part of the Estate therein mentioned in Trustees, to convey the same, or join with the Owners of the other Shares thereof in conveying the Whole, to the respective Purchasers.

It is Ordered, That the Consideration of the said Petition be, and is hereby, referred to the Lord Chief Baron of the Court of Exchequer and Mr. Justice Clive; who are forthwith to summon all Parties concerned in the Bill; and, after hearing them, are to report to the House the State of the Case, with their Opinion thereupon, under their Hands, and whether all Parties who may be concerned in the Consequences of the Bill have signed the Petition; and also that the Judges, having perused the Bill, do sign the same.

The Order of the Day being read, for the Second Reading of the Bill, intituled, "An Act to dissolve the Marriage of John Ennever Gentleman with Mary Cornwell his now Wife; and to enable him to marry again; and for other Purposes therein mentioned;" and for hearing Counsel, as well for as against the same:

Counsel were accordingly called in.

But no Counsel appearing for Mrs. Ennever:

Thomas Evans was produced, and sworn, and examined as to the Service of the Order for giving her Notice; and informed the House, "That he delivered a Copy of the Bill, with the Order for giving her Notice of this Proceeding, to Mrs. Ennever, at her Lodgings in White Chappel; that he had never seen her before; but she acknowledged hereself to be Mr. Ennever's Wife."

Whereupon Sarah Briscoe was called in, and sworn; and informed the House, "That the said Mrs. Ennever lodges at her House; and that the said Thomas Evans delivered the Papers to the said Mrs. Ennever, on Friday the 16th of this Month, in her Presence."

Then Elizabeth Taverner was called in, and sworn; and, being examined as to any unlawful Familiarities between Mrs. Ennever and Jonathan Harvey Mr. Ennever's Cow-man, gave the House an Account, "That she was a Servant in the Family, and had very often observed very unlawful and indecent Familiarities between her Mistress and the said Jonathan Harvey the Cow-keeper; that she used to be much in his Company, and to be with him often alone; and that, after her Master had discharged the said Jonathan from his Service on account of those Familiarities, they often met together in the Stables and Cart-houses; and her Mistress set her to stand Watch, to give Notice when her Master came Home."

She is directed to withdraw.

Next, William Reynolds, who also was a Servant in the Family, was called in, and sworn; and gave the like Account of very indecent Familiarities between his Mistress and the said Jonathan Harvey; and "That she used to order the Maid to stand Watch, that they (fn. 1) may not be surprized by the other Servants; and also that she eloped from her Husband on the 16th of August 1750; and that, when she went away, she was reputed to be with Child, and that her Husband and she had kept separate Beds from February 1748/9."

Then Thomas Papril was called in, and sworn; and, being examined, gave the like Account of very indecent Familiarities between Mrs. Ennever and the said Jonathan Harvey.

And Elizabeth Ingram was called; and, being sworn and examined, gave the House an Account, "That she lived as a Servant in the Family about Four Years ago; that she could not speak as to any Familiarities between her Mistress and Jonathan Harvey; but she had seen very great and indecent Familiarities between her and one Philip Benton; and particularly that she carried a Glass of Wine once to them in the Bedroom, where they were in a very indecent Posture."

Then Anthony Bayley was called in; and, being sworn, gave the House an Account of his finding Mrs. Ennever in Bed with a Man at Hobbs' Coffee-house, a House of bad Repute, in Newcastle Street, near White Chapel, on the 18th of November last; but he did not know the Man.

Then John Hawkins was called in; and, being sworn, gave the like Account of his being at the said Coffeehouse with the last Witness, and seeing her in Bed with a Man; but he did not know the Man.
