Serjeant Ashley's Petition.

THE Petition of Mr. Serjeant Ashley was read, wherein he expressed his Sorrow for their Lordships Displeasure; and humbly desired to be admitted the Recognition enjoined him.

The Serjeant, being brought to the Bar, kneeled, made his Submission and Acknowledgement enjoined; expressed his Sorrow for his Offence, and humbly asked Forgiveness for the same.

Whereupon he was discharged out of the Gentleman Usher's Custody, and admitted to his Place again.

Liberties of the Subject.

The Lords being put in Mind of the Businesses appointed for this Day, concerning the Liberties of the Subject; the House was adjourned ad Libitum, for the freer Debate thereof.

Resumed again;

Agreed, as a General Conclusion by the whole House, That a Commitment by the King, or by His Council, is good for Point of Authority: And, if the Cause of the Commitment be just, then the Commitment is good for the Matter. But these Two Concessions shall no Way prejudice the King's Authority, nor yet the Propositions of the House of Commons.
