	Writ, 24 May, 42 Edward III.
KENT.	Inq. (indented) taken at Esshetesford, 12 September, 42 Edward III.
	Snergate. The manor, held in fee tail by grant of James de Cobham to her and Gervase Alard her late husband and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of Gervase, by a fine levied in the king’s court on the morrow of the Purification, 6 Edward III. They died without heirs of their bodies. The manor is held of the archbishop of Canterbury by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee. The said Agnes held no other lands &c. in the county. She died on 22 April last. Reynold son of Reynold de Cobham, aged 18 years, is her kinsman and heir, and is in the king’s wardship as a minor.

SUFFOLK.	Inq. (indented) taken at Kenteford, Sunday before St. Margaret the Virgin, 43 Edward III.
	Multon. A messuage with a dovecot, 100a. land, 1a. 1r. meadow, 1/2a. pasture, a toft, and 2s. 1d. rent, held of the prioress of Theford, John de Cheveryston and Thomas Holbech, services not known. He died on Friday after St. Laurence, 42 Edward III. John his son, aged 15 years and more, is his heir.

CAMBRIDGE.	Inq. taken at Weston Collevill, Monday before the Conversion of St. Paul, 42 Edward III.
	Weston Colvill. The said John and Agnes his wife were enfeoffed jointly by a fine levied in the king’s court of a manor called ‘le Moignes’ in Weston Colvill (extent given), held of the earl of Richmond by knight’s service. The manor was seized into the king’s hands long before and after John’s death, but the cause the jurors know not. He had no more lands &c. in the county. He died at London on Friday after St. Laurence, 42 Edward III. John his son, aged 14 years, is his heir.

DEVON.	Inq. taken at Totton, Saturday after the Ascension, 42 Edward III.
	Skyredon. A messuage and a carucate of land, 24s. rents of free tenants and others, and a watermill, held of the king in chief in free socage, rendering 3s. yearly at the castle of Exeter and giving the king three barbed arrows when he hunts in the forest of Dertemore. He held no other lands &c. of the king or of others. He died on Saturday after St. Peter in Cathedra, 42 Edward III. William Boyvyll, his son, aged 40 years and more, is his heir.

	Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said John, and who has been in possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 21 November, 42 Edward III.

	Welcumstowe. A tenement called ‘Waterhalle’ in the hamlet of Higham, held of the king in chief, as parcel of the manor of Benyngton, by knight’s service; and a tenement called ‘Benstedes’ in the same hamlet, comprising a chief messuage, 62a. land in the field called ‘le Brach,’ 12a. land in the field called ‘Shepecotebrach,’ 3a. land in Clerkiscroft, 18a. land in the field of Aldrichfeld, 16a. land in Thorncroft, 8a. land in Ladicroft, 14a. land in Langlondtoft, 12a. land at ‘le Doune,’ 1 1/2a. at Boliswere, 8a. land at Portefeld, 12a. land at Hikemanfeld, 11a. land called ‘le Smytheshouslond,’ 2 1/2a. land called ‘Rediscroft,’ 1a. wood, 4a. meadow called ‘Wydemad,’ 1a. meadow in Hoggesfordemersh, 2 1/2a. meadow in Siwardistonmersh, 1a. meadow called ‘Boliswere,’ 2a. pasture called ‘Brok,’ 5a. pasture under the said chief messuage, 1 1/2a. pasture called ‘Stepputelpastour,’ 4a. pasture called ‘Wydmad,’ 1a. pasture called ‘le Grenelane,’ and 10s. rent. The tenement of Benstede is held of the abbot of Waltham and the earl of Warwick, services not known. John de Benstede, father of the deceased, purchased the tenement called ‘Bensted’ from Richard son of William de Betuyne by a fine levied in the king’s court in 35 Edward I, and was in peaceable possession all his life. After his death John de Benstede, now deceased, his son, entered upon it and died in seisin thereof. After his death it was taken, together with all the other lands &c. of the said John, into the king’s hands in 33 Edward III by reason of the minority of Edward his son and heir. He died about the feast of St. Margaret, 32 Edward III. Edward his son, aged 15 years at the feast of St. Luke last, is his heir. Richard de Punchardon, knight, has been in possession of the said tenement, and of all the other lands &c. of the said John in divers counties, by demise of the king, for a certain farm to be paid in the Exchequer yearly until the full age of Edward the heir.

213.	HENRY DE BRETON.
	Writ, 22 October, 42 Edward III.
NORFOLK.	Inq. taken at Bokenham, Tuesday after All Saints, 42 Edward III.
	Snyterton. 30a. land, and 7 marks rent from various free tenants and 14 customary tenants in Snyterton, Shropham, Wyleby, Hargham, Lirlyngg, Bretthenham, Illyngton, Rokelound, and Stowebydon, held of the king in chief, as parcel of the barony of Tatishale, by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee. Services of the customary tenants specified. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on Sunday after the Nativity of the Virgin Mary last. Henry de Pakenham, aged 29 years and more, son and heir of Agnes one of his sisters and heirs, and Lettice Heryng, aged 50 years and more, his other sister and heir, are his heirs.

214.	ALICE LATE THE WIFE OF GILES DE BASSYNGBURGH, BASSINGBURGH, or BASSINGBORN.
	Writ, 8 May, 42 Edward III.
YORK.	Inq. taken at Thornton Styward, 12 June, 42 Edward III.
	Thornton Styward. The manor (extent given, including a common oven, and a fishery in the water of Yore), held for life, as appears by a fine levied in the king’s court, with remainder to Walter son of Robert de Colvill and Margaret daughter of Giles de Bassingborn and the heirs of their bodies. Walter and Margaret are dead, so that Robert their son is heir to the manor after Alice’s death. The manor is held of the earl of Richmond by knight’s service, suit to the court of Richmond every three weeks, and by service of rendering for fines (pro finis) and ward of the same castle [of Richmond] 31s. 8d. yearly. She held no other lands &c. in the escheator’s bailiwick. She died on Tuesday in the first week of Lent last. The aforesaid Robert is 3 years of age and more.

NORTHAMPTON.	Inq. (indented) taken at Northampton, Thursday before Whitsun, 42 Edward III.
	Abindon. The manor, held for her life of the king in chief by knight’s service, by a fine levied in the king’s court with the king’s licence, with remainder as above. She held no other lands &c. in the county. She died in the county of Richmond on Tuesday in the first week of Lent. Heir as above.

215.	ALICE LATE THE WIFE OF ROGER BELER.
	Writ, 28 October, 42 Edward III.
RUTLAND.	Inq. (indented) taken at Market Overton, Thursday after St. Martin, 42 Edward III.
	Stretton. The manor (extent given), held in dower by gift of Roger, her late husband, of the inheritance of Roger Beler, his son and heir now surviving, by assignment made to her in the king’s Chancery because her said late husband held the manor and other lands &c. of the king in chief. The manor is held by knight’s service, but for what portion of a fee the jurors know not. The extent includes a wood called ‘le Esthawe.’ She died on 23 October last. Roger Beler aforesaid, aged 40 years and more, is her heir.

	She held no lands &c. in the county.
NOTTINGHAM.	Inq. (indented) taken at Notyngham, 14 November, 42 Edward III.
	Boney. 12 messuages and 12 virgates of land, held for life, by gift of Richard de Whatton, late parson of the church of Wydmerpole, with successive remainders to the present Roger Beler, knight, for his life, and to Roger son of the said Roger and the heirs of his body. The premises are held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. She died on 23 October last. The aforesaid Roger Beler, knight, aged 40 years and more, is her heir.

LEICESTER.	Inq. (indented) taken at Leicester, Friday after St. Martin, 42 Edward III.
	Kyrkeby upon Wrethek. The manor (extent given, consisting of a chief messuage and a carucate of land held of the master of the hospital of Burton Lazars by service of 7s. yearly, and another carucate of land and 20a. meadow and 100s. rent held of the prior of Monks Kirkeby by service of 100s. yearly). Little Dalby. A messuage and a virgate of land, and 2s. rent in Holwell, held of Alice de Dryby by service of a rose at Midsummer. All held by gift of John Cosyn, late warden of the chapel of St. Peter, Kyrkeby, to her and her late husband and the heirs of their bodies. Roger Beler, now surviving, is her son by her said husband, and is heir by the form of the gift aforesaid. Date of death and heir as above.

216.	RALPH BASSET of Weldon.
	Writ in the form of a diem clausit extremum regarding the said Ralph, who has assumed the habit of religion in the priory of la Laund. 29 October, 42 Edward III.
HERTFORD.	Inq. taken at Wylsthorn, Saturday before St. Edmund the King, 42 Edward III.
	Wylsthorn. The manor, held of the archbishop of Canterbury by service of 23s. 8d. yearly in socage, and of Roger de Potenham, knight, by service of 4d. a year. It is worth 8l. a year, and is now let at farm at that price. The said Ralph was professed in the priory of la Laund on 23 October last. Ralph his son, aged 21 years and more, is his heir.

BUCKINGHAM.	Inq. (indented) taken at Wenge, Thursday the feast of St. Clement, 42 Edward III.
	Drayton Bechamp. A toft, 100a. land, and 30s. rent in the hands of free tenants, held of the prince of Wales by knight’s service as parcel of the manor of Wylsthorn, co. Hertford. He held no other lands &c. in the county. Date of profession and heir as above.

LEICESTER.	Inq. (indented) taken at Leycestre, Monday after St. Katharine, 42 Edward III.
	Estlangeton. A toft and 2 virgates of land, held of Thomas Latymer of Braybrok, knight, by service of 9s. yearly. He was a founder of the priory of Launde on the day he professed. Thorplangeton. A toft and 3 virgates of land, held of Thomas de Langeton by knight’s service. Date of profession, and heir, aged 22 years and more, as above.

NORTHAMPTON.	Inq. (indented) taken at Weldon, 20 November, 42 Edward III.
	Weston upon Welond and Weldon. The manors (extents given), with appurtenances in Weldon, Weston, and Sutton, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. The extent of Weldon includes 7 carucates of land in demesne, whereof 6 lie fallow and the pasture thereof is worth nothing because it lies beneath Rokingham forest and is destroyed by the king’s deer, a wood called ‘le Park’ containing 10a., and 2 woods called ‘le Fax …..’ and ‘le Northtwod’ containing 8a. Asshele. The said Ralph gave and by his deed confirmed to Thomas vicar of Weston and Richard de Asshele, chaplain, 10 marks yearly rent in Asshele for their lives in survivorship, with reversion to him and his heirs; but of whom the said rent is held the jurors know not. Date of profession, and heir, aged 21 years, as above.

	Writ, 24 June, 42 Edward III.
ESSEX.	Inq. taken at Brok Walden, Tuesday after St. Peter’s Chains, 42 Edward III.
	Wenden Magna. The manor (extent given), held of John Plays, knight, by service of one knight’s fee. He died on Monday before St. Margaret the Virgin in the county of Gloucester, as the jurors understand. Thomas his son, who was 16 years of age at the feast of St. Martin in the Winter, is his heir.
	Writ, 20 October, 42 Edward III.
LONDON.	Inq. taken before the mayor, 24 October, 42 Edward III.
	He died on Saturday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 42 Edward III, seised of:— Parish of St. Andrew, Castelbaynard. A tenement with a cellar and 3 shops; and 9s. quit rent from the tenement formerly belonging to John Potenhale and now held by Alice late the said John’s wife. The premises are held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London. Heir as above. Edward Berkele, knight, kinsman of the said Maurice, has been in possession of the premises since Maurice’s death.

WILTS.	Inq. made at Salisbury, 26 July, 42 Edward III.
	Chiklade. 30s. rent, held as parcel of the manor of Couele, co. Gloucester, tenure not known. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on 8 June last. Thomas his son, aged 15 years on 4 January last, is his heir.

SOMERSET.	Inq. (indented) taken at Bedmynstre, 3 August, 42 Edward III.
	Bedmystre. The manor (extent given), with two-thirds of the hundred and with the views of frankpledge, held of Edward le Despenser by knight’s service. The extent includes 70a. arable in Fileswodesfeld within the chace of Philippa queen of England, worth nothing on account of the queen’s deer, 60a. arable in Dounfeld, and 152a. of oak wood, the underwood of which is worth nothing because it is within the said chace and the queen’s deer feed there. The two-thirds of the hundred are worth 20 marks a year. The third part remains to Katharine, relict of Thomas the deceased’s father. Portbury. Two-thirds of the manor (extent given), held of the earl of Devon, service not known. The extent includes two gardens with vines and fish-ponds in them, a fishery in the Severne, a rabbit warren called ‘le Holmes,’ 53a. arable of ‘uplond,’ and 180 1/2a. arable in ‘la Mersh.’ Bruggewattur. 10l. at Michaelmas from the manor of la Park. Porteshed. A third part of the manor (extent given), held of the duke of Lancaster, of the honor of Trowbrugge, by knight’s service. The extent includes 33a. arable of ‘uplond,’ 23a. arable in ‘la Mersh,’ and a fishery in the Severne. He also held a messuage, a virgate of arable and a dovecot of the heir of Capenore by knight’s service. He held no other lands &c. in the escheator’s bailiwick. He died on 8 June last. Thomas his son, aged 15 years on the eve of the Epiphany, 41 Edward III, is his heir.

GLOUCESTER.	Inq (fn. 1) (indented) taken at Nuport, Wednesday after the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, 42 Edward III.
	Berkele. The castle and town, held in fee tail of the king in chief by knight’s service, with its members, to wit, Hamme, Appulrugg, Alkynton, Hynton, Slymbrugg with the advowson of the church of the same, Couelegh, and Upton St. Leonards (extents given). The extent of Berkele includes a watermill called ‘le Castelmull.’ The extent of the manor of Hamme includes an enclosed park called ‘Whitclyve’ and a watermill let to William Mulleward. The extent of the manor of Appulrugge includes an enclosed park called ‘le Newepark.’ The extent of the manor of Alkynton includes an enclosed park called ‘Ocle’ and a chace called ‘Mykkelwode.’ The extent of the manor of Hynton includes a fishery in the Severn, an enclosed park called ‘Schobbenasse,’ a little grove called ‘Chisulhongur,’ and a windmill let to William Panyter. The extents of the manors of Slymbrugg and Couelegh are also given. The manor of Upton St. Leonards is let at farm for 4l. yearly. Berkele. Two-thirds of the hundred, with the views of frankpledge, are worth 10l. 11s. yearly. The third part remains to Katharine, lady of Wotton, by way of dower, with other manors assigned to her after the death of Thomas de Berkele, father of Maurice aforesaid, her husband. Akton Ilger. A sixth part of the manor, held of the duke of Lancaster, of the honor of Troubrugg, by knight’s service and suit of court. [Seyntcleye]. (fn. 2) A messuage and a virgate of land, held of the abbess of Caen by service of ploughing the abbess’s land for one day with one plough, and reaping the corn for one day with two men, and carrying the corn with one cart or waggon for one day in autumn, and by suit to the abbess’s court. Aure. The manor (extent given), with its appurtenances, to wit, Ettelowe and Blakeney with the hundred of Blyddeslowe, held in fee tail of the earl of March by service of a peppercorn. The extent includes a fishery in the Severn and a hundred (court) worth 6l. 13s. 4d. yearly. Tokynhal. 5a. meadow, held of the earl of Warwick by service of a rose. Pyryton. 67s. yearly rent, held of Gilbert Tallebot by service of a sore sparrowhawk. Hurste. The manor, held jointly with Elizabeth his wife, who survives, by gift of Sir Thomas de Berkele, his father, to them and their heirs male. They held it of the lord de Clyfford of the northern parts by knight’s service. Frompton. 22 marks yearly rent in the manor, and 12l. 10s. yearly rent in the manor of Camme, held jointly as above. The rent is appurtenant to the manor of Hurst. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on Thursday the feast of Corpus Christi, 8 June last. Thomas his son, aged 15 years on Tuesday after the Circumcision, to wit, 4 January last, is his heir.
	Extent of the lands &c. of Maurice son of Thomas de Berkele knight, deceased, in the counties of Gloucester, Somerset, Wilts and ESSEX. Sum total, 554l. 14s. 4 1/2d. The lands forming the dower of the widow are noted.

	Bitham. The manor and castle, held jointly with Cecily his wife, who survives, of the earl of Bedford and Isabel his wife, the king’s daughter, as of the honor of Aumale, by knight’s service. Corby. The manor, similarly held of the bishop of Lincoln by knight’s service. Careby. The manor, similarly held of the lady de Wake by knight’s service. Birton. The manor, similarly held of …….. Deyncourt by knight’s service. Repynghale. The manor, similarly held of the lady de Wake and of Roger Petwardyne of the fee of Croune by knight’s service. Cheyle. The manor, similarly held of the bishop of Lincoln by knight’s service. All the above were granted by Geoffrey Broune, parson of the church of Benyngfeld, Richard de Dornthorp, vicar of the church of Bytham, and John de Alyngton and John Walgor, chaplains, to the said Robert and Cecily and the heirs male of their bodies by a fine levied in the king’s court at Westminster in the quinzaine of Trinity, 39 Edward III. Billesfeld. The manor, similarly held of the bishop of Lincoln by knight’s service. This manor was granted by William de Colvill of Swynstede, Richard de Dornthorp, vicar of the church of Castelbytham, and John Walgor of Castelbytham, chaplain, to the aforesaid Robert and Cecily and the heirs of their bodies by a fine levied in the king’s court in the quinzaine of Easter, 32 Edward III. Auburn. The manor, similarly held of the lord de Roos of the fee of Roos by knight’s service. They had this manor by grant of Robert de Kendall, knight, by a fine levied in the king’s court at Westminster in the octave of Trinity, 1 Edward III. Southwythum. The manor, similarly held by gift and feoffment of Richard de Tye, clerk, as appears by his charter. The manor is held of the honor of Huntyngdon by knight’s service. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on Friday after the Conversion of St. Paul, 42 Edward III. Robert de Colvill, son of Walter de Colvill, knight, son of the said Robert de Colvill, knight, aged nearly 4 years, is his heir.

219.	JOHN COUPERE of Raghton.
	Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands of the said John, who is his heir and whether married or no, and who has been in possession of the said lands since his death. 16 October, 42 Edward III.
CUMBERLAND.	Inq. taken at Penreth, Wednesday before St. Martin, 42 Edward III.
	Raghton. A messuage and 5a. land on Raghton moor, held of the king in chief as a purpresture by service of rendering at the Exchequer of Carlisle by the hands of the sheriff 2s. 6d. yearly at the Assumption. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on Monday after the Assumption, 23 Edward III. Robert Couper, his son and heir, aged 30 years, was in possession of the premises from his death until they were seized into the king’s hands by William de Nessefeld, then escheator. The said Robert died in 31 Edward III. William Jakson, as kinsman and heir of John Couper aforesaid, has been in possession since Robert’s death, but receives nothing therefrom beyond the said service. He is 30 years of age and more, and is married.

CUMBERLAND.	Inq. taken at Penreth, Saturday before the Annunciation, 43 Edward III.
	Raghton. A messuage and 5a. land, as above. He died in the first pestilence, day not known. Robert Couper, his son and heir, was in possession of the premises from his death until they were seized into the king’s hand by William de Neesfeld, then escheator. Robert is dead, and William Jaksson of Raghton, son of Eda (Ede) sister of John Coupere aforesaid, is his heir. He is of full age and married, and has been in possession since Robert’s death by licence and grant of the escheator, but has received nothing therefrom beyond the service aforesaid.

DEVON.	Inq. (indented) taken at Exeter, Tuesday after the Invention of the Holy Cross, 42 Edward III.
	Ufcolmp. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. Baunton. A moiety of the manor (extent given), and no more because he enfeoffed William Cogan his son and [Katharine] (fn. 3) his son’s wife of the other moiety, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies, with the king’s licence. The entire manor is held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. He died in the night of Saturday [after the feast of St. George] (fn. 4) last. William Cogan, knight, his son, of full age, is his heir.

	Hunstyle and Wygebare. The manors, held of the king in chief by service of doing fealty and rendering 20s. yearly at the Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff. Honspull. The manor, with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief by knight’s service, to wit, for a moiety of a knight’s fee. He held no other lands &c. He died on 10 April, 42 Edward III. William Cogan, his son, who was aged 24 years and more at the time of his father’s death, is his heir.
