Clerks of the Civil List 1831-70
When in 1831 the office of Auditor of the Civil List was absorbed into the Treasury, two Clerks of the Civil List were transferred to the establishment. At first both Clerks received a salary of £200. (fn. 1) In 1837 a distinction was made between the salaries paid to the Senior and Junior Clerks. The scale provided for the former was £250 rising by annual increments of £10 to £350. In 1851 the upper limit was raised to £400. In 1856 a new scale was established beginning at £350 and rising by annual increments of £15 to £500. At the same time it was laid down that future vacancies should be filled by the best qualified Supplementary Clerk. In 1861 the starting level was increased to £400 and in 1869 the Senior Clerk was given the rank of Staff Officer. (fn. 2)
The salary scale accorded to the Junior Clerk in 1837 was £90 rising by annual increments of £10 to £150. In 1861 he was given the rank and salary of a Second Class Supplementary Clerk. (fn. 3)
