First Class Clerks 1816-70

This grade was created in 1816 when it was provided that there should be eight First Class Clerks. (fn. 1) The number was reduced to six in 1821 when two of the clerkships were left vacant. (fn. 2) One of these vacancies was filled in 1829. (fn. 3) In 1832 the number of First Class Clerks was fixed at six. (fn. 4) It was increased to seven in 1837, (fn. 5) to nine in 1853, (fn. 6) to ten in 1854 (fn. 7) and to eleven in 1862. (fn. 8) One of the clerkships was left vacant in 1867 and four more during the course of 1869. In 1870 the number of First Class Clerks was established at six. (fn. 9)

In 1816 the salary scale attached to the grade was fixed at £600 rising by annual increments of £10 to £850. (fn. 10) The amount of the annual increment was increased to £25 in 1837. (fn. 11) In 1867 the scale was fixed at £650 rising by annual increments of £25 to £900. (fn. 12)
