Clerks attached to Librarian's Department 1826-70

A Temporary Clerk, or Assistant, was employed in the Librarian's Department in the years 1826-39. His salary, payable out of the contingent fund, was fixed at £100 in 1826 and increased to £150 in 1838. (fn. 1) In 1841 provision was made for two permanent Clerks to serve in the Department, the First with a salary of £100 rising by annual increments of £10 and £15 to £300, and the Second with a salary of £80 rising by annual increments of £10 and £15 to £250. (fn. 2) From 1841 to 1854 three or four Temporary Clerks were attached to the Department with salaries of £100 rising by annual increments of £10 to £150. (fn. 3) In 1854 the appointments of the three Temporary Clerks then in employment were made permanent. The salary of the First Clerk was fixed at £260 rising by annual increments of £15 to £350, of the Second at £200 rising by annual increments of £15 to £260, of the Third at £150 rising by annual increments of £10 to £200, and of the Fourth and Fifth at £100 rising by annual increments of £10 to £150. (fn. 4) A Temporary Clerk with a salary of £200 was again employed from 1862. (fn. 5) In 1865 the First to Third Clerks were placed in the new grade of Second Class Supplementary Clerk with salaries of £250 rising by annual increments of £15 to £360; the Fourth and Fifth Clerks were graded as Third Class Supplementary Clerks with salaries of £100 rising by annual increments of £10 to £240. (fn. 6) In 1868 arrears in registration and increased library accommodation in the new Foreign Office building necessitated the appointment of two additional Third Class Supplementary Clerks and five Temporary Clerks with salaries of £140.
