Melancholy Walk (Fig. 201)

(261) Freeman's Cottages, two storeys, coursed rubble walls, mansard roof, comprise seven dwellings of class 14a plan; two dwellings at the E. end were formed out of an 18th-century building which had a central entrance. The present row was built in 1838 but was recently gutted and altered externally. Set in the wall is a panel inscribed 'NNE 1838' for Noah Norton, the owner and presumably builder (Improvement Commissioners' minutes).
