"Index". An Inventory of the Historical Monuments in City of York, Volume 1, Eburacum, Roman York. (London, 1962), , British History Online. Web. 11 December 2024. https://www.british-history.ac.uk/rchme/york/vol1/pp153-168.
The diversity of the items in the Inventory, which, for the reasons stated in the Report, p. xxvi, range from buildings to inscribed amulets, has necessitated the use of two sets of numbering: (1–61) for Monuments, (1–154) for Inscriptions, Sculptures and Architectural Fragments. In the Index the numbers of the former are given in brackets thus, (10); the numbers of the latter are also in brackets but prefaced 'Insc. No.' or 'No.', for example, (Insc. No. 10) or (No. 10). Where necessary for precise reference and for reference in a wider context to Museum objects, the Museum series numbers are also given; those from the Yorkshire Museum normally have the prefix H., H.G., C. or Acc., those from the Sheffield Museum the prefix J.
The capital letters in brackets, (A)–(V), associated with entries for the wall, rampart and ditches of the fortress, serve to identify the sites on the fortress plan, Fig. 3, and on the relevant section and plan Figures.
The Index includes references to Plates and Figures. For necessary economy in space, and without serious loss in convenience, these references are restricted to prime entries, for example, 'Constantine I, Emperor, sculptured head of, found in Stonegate, pp. xxxiv, 37b, 112a, Pl. 42', as opposed to a secondary entry, 'Stonegate, sculptured head of Constantine I found in, pp. xxxiv, 112a'.
In the Index, references to the left and right columns on the page are identified by 'a' and 'b' respectively after the page numbers.
