3. MONUMENTS IN THE CHURCH AND CHURCHYARD

We have no eye-witness's account of the many monuments that must have adorned St Bride's Church before the Great Fire destroyed them. Even John Stow omits his usual list of the principal memorials and mentions only the Chantries of Ulsthorpe, Evesham and Wigan, without reference to the tombs that must have marked their burial. A long list of persons interred in the Church could be compiled from wills and other sources, but of their monuments we have only a few inscriptions preserved by chroniclers, and these are given below:

WILLIAM AND ELIZABETH WEVER, 1409

Weever in his Ancient Funeral Monuments (1631), p. 436 gives these lines:

Vndyr this ston William Weuer doth ly
Cityzon, and Elizabeth his wyf hym by.
He died the viii and she the vii dey of September
Leuing Geoffry, Mary and Ellin thar children as I remember
Whos sowls God receyve to fauor and pease
Wyth Ioyes to lyve that neuyr sal cease. 1409.

The name of James Trussell, citizen and clothier was inscribed among the benefactors to the Church. He left (1635) an annual sum of £3. 10s. 0d. paid by the Clothworkers' Company.

JAMES KINNON, 1615

In the edition of Stow's Survey issued by George Purslowe in 1618 (p. 750) is given the following inscription within the Church:

JAMES KINNON, a gent. of Lentils, Co. Mon., a citizen and Cannoniere and a souldier, died aged 67, by ouer-heating his bloud in preparing of forty Chambers at the Entertainment of the Prince in the Artillery Garden. To which Society he gave 40 Chambers and 5 marks in money. To the poor of the parish he gave 10li per annum for 21 years. He had one wife and son. Obiit 19 December 1615.

Thomas Flatman, the father, a poet and miniature-painter (1637–88) lived in the parish and was also buried in the church (see Dict. Nat. Biog.).

In the MS. Collections for the History of the Parish of St Bride by the Rev. John Pridden (mentioned under his monument, see No. 81) are the following transcriptions (Nos. 108–114) taken from coffins in the Herne vault. Mr Pridden states that this vault was 'between the gallery stairs on the north side of the church and the Churchwardens' pews. The entrance to it is about the midway.'

At the East end of the vault:

Note. It is possible that Pridden's transcriptions were not wholly accurate since it is recorded in a MS. in the College of Arms that John Cottle of Doctors Commons, a Procurator General of the High Court of Admiralty (born 1660, died 1720 and buried in Bath Abbey) married Susanna, daughter of Joseph Hall of London, merchant (buried in the Earl of Jersey's vault at St Bride's, 7 June 1698). A daughter Sarah, aged 7, was buried at Kelsall, Herts in 1690.

Pridden records further, under date 7 July 1787: 'Answer concerning the vault at St Bride's, Mr Herne's Family will do nothing in it. Mr Villiers, Ld Jersey's Bror was buried there likewise Ldy Jersey his mother, if he has a mind to apply to that Family.'

During the period of 20 years he was the faithful, approved and highly respected Curate of this extensive Parish, solemn, able and impressive in the performance of the duties of his Holy function; to the children of the parishioners whom he catechized, encouraged, rewarded according to merit, by gifts of the Common Prayer and other books of devotion, he was the Kind Pastor and Spiritual Guide, as a Divine he felt what he said and lived what he taught, his manner was dignified, his voice deep and impressive, the ear was charmed and the attention captivated. He was ever ready to advocate the cause of Christian love & charity. As an antiquary, his name is recorded for deep research, extensive investigation and historical acquirement. The Humane Society and the Margate Infirmary hold in grateful recollection the long and valuable services of their Benevolent Friend and gratuitous Chaplain. His mind active and strong stored by application and ever intent upon some undertaking of standard utility was deeply & anxiously engaged in making for the use of Governments, an Epitome of the earlier Rolls of Parliament, a work of toil, which for 30 years occupied his every leisure moment, and at length brought him to the grave. He died at his house in Fleet Street, April the 5th and was buried on the 12th in the Church yard of St. Mary, Islington. Aged 67 a. d. 1825

John Nichols, the well known printer and author, who wrote, among other works, The History and Antiquities of the Town and County of Leicester was in business in Red Lion Passage, Fleet Street from 1767. His first wife Ann, whom he married in 1766 was daughter of William Craddock. His children by her were William Bowyer Nichols, named after his master William Bowyer, and Anne who married, in 1787, the Rev. John Pridden, curate at St Bride's (see Monument No. 81). His second wife Martha, whom he married 11 June 1788, was daughter of William Green, of a family seated at Somerby, Lincolnshire, and Mary (Iliff) a descendant of the Cleivelands, after whom their son was named. Their first child was John Bowyer Nichols whose name is so closely connected with the Gentleman's Magazine and who published the great county histories of the period. The second son was Thomas Cleiveland Nichols to whom Bishop Percy was godfather. The third son is also commemorated on the memorial tablet and there were three daughters, the birth of the last being the cause of her mother's death. (fn. 2) The brass was in bad condition and the transcription is therefore not complete.
