APPENDIX I: LEASES OF THE PRINCIPAL STREETS ON THE ESTATE

This table provides information about the initial development of Brook Street, Grosvenor Square, Grosvenor Street, Upper Brook Street, Upper Grosvenor Street and the part of South Audley Street between South Street and the estate boundary: the house plots and the areas covered by building agreements are shown on Plan A in the end pocket.

The house numbers are as at present or (where sites have been merged) are those of the original sites in the present sequence. Where the present site arrangement differs substantially from the original the numbers last in use when the original sites still existed are given (as at the corners with Park Street). Where sites were merged before the present sequence of numbers was adopted, as at No. 10 Grosvenor Square or No. 75 South Audley Street, the original houses have been distinguished as, for example, 10 (east) and 10 (west) or 75 (north) and 75 (south).

The building leases were granted by the head of the Grosvenor family, or by Robert Myddelton, the guardian of Dame Mary Grosvenor (see pages 7 8, 16–17, where general information about the leases can also be found).

The rent is the sum specified in the building lease except where a separate sub-lease is indicated in the table, when the rent is the sum specified in that sub-lease.

Information about the first occupants is derived mainly from the ratebooks of the parish of St. George, Hanover Square, and because of the nature of the evidence there may be inaccuracies in the dates of residence given
