The Editor desires to express his thanks to all who have helped him in the production of this volume, more particularly to the Lord Mayor and City Council of York, their town clerk and others who assisted the writer of the article on the Social and Economic History of the county by giving access to their muniments and manuscripts.

Owing to the long illness and subsequent death on 25 November 1910 of Mr. T. M. Fallow, M.A., F.S.A., whose loss has been sincerely felt by his many friends and those who appreciated his thorough and scholarly work, the article on the Religious Houses of the county had to be completed by others. The Editor is responsible for the revision and modification of Mr. Fallow's work demanded by the exigencies of space, and for the correction of the proofs.

The Editor is indebted to the Society of Antiquaries for permission to reproduce a plan of Pontefract Castle in their possession.
