Heywood.
To R. count of Flanders. John Balay, citizen and merchant of Bayonne, has complained to the king that Philip, count of Chietti (Thiete) and Lorette (Laurethe), the count's brother, when he held the government of Flanders during the war between the men of Flanders and of Zeeland, caused a ship and the goods in her to be taken from the said John for that war, without making him any satisfaction therefor, and caused his letters patent to be made to the said John concerning the taking of the said ship, and for the payment of 260l., the value of the ship and goods; the said count R. has not yet restored the said ship and goods to the said John, or caused him to be satisfied for the said sum; the king therefore requests him to do so, exhibiting such speedy remedy herein that complaint may not again be made to the king for want of justice. Enrolment of grant from Richard de Bacheworth to Matthew de Osgodby and Katherine his wife of two messuages, a toft, 45 acres of land, 3 acres of meadow, and 20s. 9d. of yearly rent, together with all his land and meadow in Haselingfeld; and of a messuage, 28½ acres of land, 1½ acres of meadow, and 10s. 10¾d. of yearly rent, and all his other tenements in the said town that Henry le Chaumberleyn and Sibyl his wife hold as her dower of the gift of John de Bacheworth, her late husband, father of the donor, to be held by them after her death. Witnesses: Sir Adam de Osgodby; Sir William de Ayremynne; William de Sengham; Walter Sterne, of Haselingfeld; Peter Thourberd, (fn. 1) of the same; William le Juefne, of the same; Hugh de Grantsete; William de Lalleford. Dated at Haselingfeld, on Monday the feast of the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, in the end of the second year of the reign of king Edward.
Memorandum, that the said Richard de Bacheworth came into the chancery on July 6, and acknowledged the said deed.
Enrolment of letters of the said Richard appointing Sir John de Dene, knight, his attorney to deliver seisin of the preceding to the said Matthew and Katherine. Dated at Haselingfeld, on Monday aforesaid.
Enrolment of bond from the said Richard and Sir John de Dene, knight, to the said Matthew in 40 marks, to be paid to him at the feast of All Saints next. Witnesses as in conveyance, omitting William le Juefne. Dated as above.
Enrolment of deed from the said Matthew, witnessing that the preceding bond shall be annulled if the said Richard cause a fine of the preceding to be levied within one month of Michaelmas next. Witnesses and date as in preceding.
Enrolment of deed from Sir John de Dene, acquitting the said Matthew and Katherine of any debts that may be due to him from the said Richard for the premises. Witnesses and date as in preceding.
Memorandum, that the said John came into chancery on July 6, and acknowledged the foregoing.
