Dec. 15.
Westminster.
To the treasurer and barons of the exchequer. Whereas the king ordered Thomas de Burgh, chamberlain of Berwick-upon-Tweed, by divers writs under the great and privy seals, the seal used in Scotland, and by other letters under the seals of Robert de Ufford and Henry de Ferariis, to pay 20l. to John de Lenne, late clerk of the king's works in the castle and town of Berwick, for divers works there, 100s. to John Crabbe in aid of his expenses for the time when he was staying at that town, for the construction of certain of the king's works, 16l. 12s. 0½d. to John de Swanland, clerk of the works of the king's castles and towns in Scotland, for divers works there, 47s. 1d. to Henry Palmer for divers works on the pele built at Stryvelyn, 7l. to the monks of the abbey of Kelshowe, which the abbots there used to receive for the seventh part of the mills of Berwick, 40 marks to the prioress and nuns of Suthberewyk, of the anciently appointed alms of the kings of Scotland, 8 marks to the prioress and nuns del Halistan, co. Northumberland. granted to them in exchange for certain plots in Rokesburgh, granted them by David, sometime king of Scotland, 8s. to brother Simon de Routhbiry, monk dwelling in the island of Farnveland, which Alexander, sometime king of Scotland, granted to the monks there in frankalmoin of the issues of Berwick yearly, 25s. to Thomas de Baumburgh, warden of the hospital of St. Mary Magdalene, near Berwick, of a yearly rent anciently due to the hospital, 40 marks to the Minorites dwelling there, of a like alms granted to them, 8l. to the Carmelites there, of an ancient alms granted to them, 20l. to Francekinus Isambert, granted for life in lieu of his wages of 12d. daily in the king's household, 6l. 13s. 4d. to John Wiggemere for his labour and expenses in the king's service in making extents, inquisitions and other affairs in co. Edenburgh, to Master Robert de Sancto Albano, engineer, his wages of 6d. daily, so long as Thomas is chamberlain, to William de Felton, constable of Rokesburgh castle and sheriff there, all the money of the ferms and other profits received by Thomas in the town and county of Rokesburgh, from Michaelmas, in the 10th year of the reign, until Michaelmas following, to John de Strvvelyn, constable of Edenburgh castle and sheriff there, all the money of the ferms, etc. of the town and county of Edenburgh for the same term, and that he should retain Roger de Whitewell, Robert Blaket and Robert de Batelay, men at arms in garrison at Berwick, and pay them their wages of 12d. daily from the time they were there; and the king ordered Thomas to cause all his engines at Berwick to be repaired according to the ordinance of John Crabbe, the king's yeoman, and to find for John all expenses and necessaries for doing certain works there, enjoined upon him by the king, making indentures thereupon, and Thomas, as he says, has paid 11l. 5s. to John de Lenn, 40s. to John Crabbe, 6l. 12s. 0½d. to John de Swanlond, 47s. 1d. to Henry Palmer, 40s. to the monks of Kelsowe, 9l. to the prioress and nuns of Suth Berewyk, 66s. 8d. to the prioress and nuns of Halistan, 8s. to Simon de Roubury, 25s. to Thomas de Baumburgh, 11l. 11s. 8d. to the prior and friars of the order of the Preachers, 7l. 4s. to the guardian and friars of the Minorites, 60s. to the Carmelites, 20l. to Francekinus, 6l. 13s. 4d. to John Wyggemere, 70s. to Robert de Sancto Albano, 129l. 11s. 3d. to William de Ripon, attorney of William de Felton, 274l. 8s. 2d. to John de Morpath and Adam, clerk, attorneys of John de Stryvelyn, 29s. for 29 days to Roger de Whitewell, and 5s. for 5 days to Robert de Bateleye, and 16l. 5s. 2d. in buying iron, timber and other things, and for the wages of carpenters and other workmen for repairing engines and other works there, by indenture made between Thomas and John Crabbe; the king therefore orders the treasurer and barons to view the writs and letters aforesaid, and the acquittances and indenture made in this respect, and to cause Thomas to have due allowance in his account for the sums, which they shall find by his oath taken before them, that he has paid to John de Lenne and the others, receiving from him the said writs, letters, acquittances and indenture. To the same. Order to cause Thomas de Burgh, chamberlain of Berwick-upon-Tweed, to be discharged and acquitted in his account of 60l. which John de Chilton, mayor of Berwiok, and other burgesses of that town, delivered in the wardrobe as a prest, if they find by the oath of Thomas that the following is the case, provided that he answer for the remaining 26s. 8d., as the king lately ordered him to deliver to the mayor and burgesses of that town for the said 60l., the king's small custom in the water of Twede, to hold from Michaelmas, in the 10th year of the reign, until St. Peter ad Vincula following, to the value of 40l., and also the custom in that town called 'halpenitol,' to the value of 17l. 6s. 8d., and allowance (trattagium) of wine in the town of the value of 4l., to hold from Martinmas in the said year, until the same feast next following, so that they should answer at the exchequer for those 26s. 8d., which exceed the said 60l., and Thomas has delivered the customs and allowance to them as he says.

To the same. Order to allow to the same Thomas in his account 10l., which are in arrears to him from Michaelmas term last, of those 20l. yearly, which the king granted to him on 16 June, in the 8th year of the reign, for his good service as treasurer in Ireland, and his expenses there, until he should be promoted by the king to an ecclesiastical benefice, and Thomas has besought the king to cause such allowance to be made to him.

To William Trussel, escheator this side Trent. Order to cause dower to be assigned to Dionisia, late the wife of Edward Charles, tenant in chief, in the presence of Augustine Waleys, to whom the king committed the custody of two parts of her husband's lands until the heir should come of age.

To the collectors of customs in the port of Southampton. Although the king lately ordered them to receive the custom, subsidy and loan of 60s. on each of 200 sacks of wool which the king granted to John de Portenare, merchant, to take to Lombardy, yet the king wishes John to be discharged of the said loan, for his good service, and orders the collectors to permit him to take his wool from that port to Lombardy, quit of the said loan by a certain security, having received the custom and subsidy thereupon, provided that John shall pay the loan, together with the custom and subsidy, if he obtains licence from the king to take other wool out of the realm beyond those 200 sacks. To the treasurer and barons of the exchequer. Order not to aggrieve James de Ros for not appearing before them at York on Wednesday, the morrow of St. Katherine, although the king lately ordered him to do so, to hear and do what should be ordained by the council, because he is of the retinue of William de Ros, and before the writ was delivered to him, he was coming to the king in William's company, whom the king sent to London against the arrival of the cardinals sent to him by the pope, as William has testified before the king in chancery.

To the sheriff of Essex. Order to cause a verderer for the forest of Bekentre, in that county, to be elected in place of John de Dakenham, who is so feeble that he cannot perform the duties of his office.

To all of the city of Chichester. Order to pay 9l. for Michaelmas term, in the 10th year of the reign, to Robert de Boys, executor of the will of Joan de Boys, sometime nurse of Eleanor, the king's sister, countess of Guelders, as the king granted to Joan and to Matilda de Pyrye, nurse of John de Eltham, earl of Cornwall, his brother, 36l., to be received yearly from the ferm of that city for their maintenance, and Robert has informed the king that the men of the city have delayed to pay the said 9l., which Joan would have received, had she been alive, because she died eight days before the said feast, and he has besought the king to order payment to be made to him for the execution of the will, and the king wishes to grant this request in consideration of Joan's good service. To the treasurer and barons of the exchequer. Order to supersede the demand which they made on William Trussel, escheator this side Trent, for the issues of the manors of Somerton Camel and Kyngesbury, and the profits of the hundred of Horthern and the moor of Kyngesmore, co. Somerset, from 17 January, in the 4th year of the reign, until 3 May following, as the king granted the said issues and profits to William de Monte Acuto, earl of Salisbury, to hold from 17 January until 3 May, which issues and profits the escheator delivered to the earl.
