January 1342

Jan. 22.
Morpeth.
To Simon Buccanigra, duke of Genoa, and to the council of Genoa. The king recalls the passage of their ancestors together to parts beyond the sea in defence of the cause of Christ, and how, six years ago, when a passage to the Holy Land was intended by the Roman church, the rulers of their land offered the king galleys and ships for that passage, of which the king cherishes a grateful memory; but afterwards when the king was engaged in war, some of their men joined his enemy, but the king, more mindful of past kindness, thought this was not the fault of the community, and wrote to the duke and council that notwithstanding this he would treat their merchants and citizens as friends; and afterwards, not a year since, their ambassadors came to the king complaining that his subjects had taken six of their galleys found in the parts of Britanny, and sought reparation from the king, who, though not bound to any damage, offered to pay 1,000l. in a short time, in spite of the charges of the wars, for the ancient friendship with them and the Flemings, to which offer they have made no response; the king, however, wishing to preserve the friendship, again refers to the letters to them and desires them to frequent the lands subject to him on either side of the sea and those of his allies, requesting them to withdraw their subjects from assisting the king's enemies, and wishes them to choose his friendship.
