PREFACE.

The present volume continues the Edition of the Close Rolls of the reign of Henry III, of which the first volume (1227–1232) was published in 1902. The volume contains rolls 75, 76 and 77, and covers the 44th and 45th regnal years (a.d. 1259–1261). During the King's absence abroad, from 14 November, 1259, to 24 April, 1260, the writs tested by him were entered on a special roll (No. 76), the entries in Roll 75 during this period being tested by the justiciar, Hugh le Bigod. The text of this volume has been prepared by several junior assistant keepers under my supervision. The Index has been compiled by Mr. K. H. Ledward, an assistant keeper of the Records.
