To the escheator in Yorkshire. Order to give Joan late the
wife of Ralph earl of Westmerland livery of the castle and manors
of Shirrefhoton and Raskelle, and the issues thereof taken, but to
remove the king's hand and meddle no further with other the
castle, manors, lands, wapentake etc. hereinafter mentioned,
delivering to her any issues thereof taken; as the king has learned
by inquisition, taken by the escheator, that the earl at his death
held jointly with her the castle and manor of Shirrefhoton with
52 messuages, 64 bovates of land, 12 acres of meadow, 10 acres
of wood and 200 acres of pasture in 'Estlillynge, Westlillynge'
and Corneburgh by grant of Thomas Grene esquire and John de
Morton, the manors of Elvyngton, Skirtyngbeke, Yaresthorp,
Raskelle, Houke, Scoreby, Wilbyrforsse, 'Stanfordbrigge, Hundburton,' Knapton, Ryse, Sutton upon Derwent, Shirburne
and Appilton in Rydale, thirty messuages, twelve bovates of
land, 20 acres of meadow, 80 acres of wood, 200 acres of pasture,
10 acres of moor and 40s. of rent in Elvyngton, twenty messuages,
six bovates of land, 20 acres of wood, 140 acres of pasture, 6 acres
of moor and 6s. of rent in Houke, ten messuages, four bovates of
land, 6 acres of meadow and 40 acres of pasture in Wylbyrfosse,
sixteen messuages, two bovates of land, 12 acres of meadow,
40 acres of pasture and 4 acres of moor in 'Standfordbrigge,'
six messuages, six bovates of land, 6 acres of meadow and 20s.

20 acres of pasture and 4s. of rent in Setryngton, twelve messuages,
eight bovates of land, 4 acres of meadow, 40 acres of pasture,
4 acres of moor and 8s. of rent in Thorlesthorp, eight messuages,
two bovates of land, 8 acres of meadow and 10 acres of pasture
in Catton, twenty messuages, sixteen bovates 40 acres of land,
6 acres of meadow and 100 acres of pasture in Bugthorp, fourteen
messuages, 16 acres of land, 8 acres of meadow, 80 acres of pasture
and 2s. of rent in Birdale, twenty messuages, 100 acres of land,
10 acres of meadow and 100 acres of pasture in Corneburgh,
eight messuages, 100 acres of land and 110 acres of pasture in
Towethorp upon the Wold, the sixth part of a ferry over the
river Ouse, a weir in that river, and the advowsons of the churches
of Elvyngton, Ryse, Welton and Walkyngton and of the chantry
of Appilton aforesaid by grant of James Strangways and Robert
Strangways esquire, and the wapentake of Hanges and Halikelde
and Gillynge by grant of John late duke of Lancastre to them
and the heirs male of their bodies, that he likewise held jointly
with her the castle, manor and lordship of Midelham, the manors
of Carleton with Coverdale, 'Westwitton,' Wodhalle, Ketilwelle
in Craven, Thoraldeby and Newbigginge with 'Bisshopdale,' and
the barony of Worton, eight messuages, ten cottages, fourteen
bovates of land, 40 acres of meadow, 200 acres of pasture, 8
acres of wood, a rent of 3s. 11d. and a mill in Burton and Woldene,
four messuages, three cottages, four gardens, 60 acres of land,
40 acres of meadow, and 200 acres of pasture within divers
enclosures in Brathwayte and 10l. of rent issuing yearly from the
castle and manor of Wilton, the manor, town and bailiwick of
Baynbrig and the free chace of 'Wenslawdale' by conveyance
of William Horne clerk and others, and the manors of Esyngwalde
and Hoby, and a yearly rent of 206l. 13s. 4d. of the issues of the
honour of Pontfreit and of Pykerynge by the hands of the receiver
by grant of the said duke to the said earl and to her for their lives,
and that the castle and manors of Shirrefhoton and Raskelle are
held in chief by knight service, the manors of Esyngwalde and
Hoby and the said wapentake of the king as of his duchy of
Lancastre, and the other castles, manors, lands, advowsons etc.
of others than the king; and for 40s. paid in the hanaper the
king has respited her homage and fealty until the feast of Trinity
next. |
