Westminster.
To the sheriff of Westmerland for the time being. Order to pay to Ralph now earl of Westmerland 20l. a year for life, and the arrears since 24 February last; as upon the finding of an inquisition, taken before Hugh Louther the escheator, that Ralph late earl of Westmerland died seised in fee tail of 20l. a year granted by letters patent of King Richard II to him and his heirs male, to be taken of the issues of that county to maintain the name and honour of earl, and that Ralph now earl is his cousin and heir, and of full age, on 24 February last the king ordered the escheator to give him seisin of all lands held by the late earl and by Elizabeth who was wife of John Neville knight his son, and those of his heritage held for life and in dower by Lucy who was wife of Edmund late earl of Kent, taken into the king's hand by their deaths and by reason of his nonage. To the sheriff of Kent for the time being. Like order, mutatis mutandis, concerning a yearly rent of 30l.; as upon the finding of an inquisition, taken before John May late escheator, that Elizabeth who was wife of John Neville knight at her death held a rent of 30l. a year by grant of King Edward III to Edmund then earl of Kent, her ancestor, and to the heirs of his body, to be taken of the issues and profits of that county, and that Ralph Neville now earl of Westmerland is her son and next heir, and upon proof of his age before William Louther late escheator in Cumberland, the king took his homage and fealty, and on 24 February last commanded livery to be given him of the lands held by Ralph late earl of Westmerland and the said Elizabeth, and of those of his heritage held in dower by Lucy who was wife of the said earl of Kent.
