Edmund Ecclys to William Bere citizen of London. Letter of
attorney, reciting that master John Langton in his life time, for
200l. to him due from the king, had livery at the exchequer of a
tally levied at the receipt thereof marked 200l., whereon was
written: From the farmers or occupiers of all lands etc. of Henry
lord Grey of Codenore deceased of the issues thereof in England at
Easter, 20 July 22 Henry VI, for master John Langton for money
lent; and reciting that he was advanced to the bishopric of St.
Davids, and died intestate, by reason whereof administration of his
goods pertained to John archbishop of Canterbury and papal
legate; that he, willing the same to be applied to payment of the
bishop's debts and other pious uses for the health of his soul, by
letters under his seal, dated his manor of Lamehith 22 November
1447 and 5 of the archbishop's translation, did commit the
same to Ecclys; that Langton at his death owed Bere 108l.
13s. 5d., namely 100l. for that he was party to two bonds to
Henry Somer esquire for a debt of Langton, and was by legal
process compelled to pay the same, and the residue he paid
little by little on Langton's behalf, as appears by account
rendered; and that the bishop in his life time delivered to
him the said tally as security, to the intent that he might
thereof obtain payment, or keep it until contented; and
appointing Bere, whom he specially desires to be paid, to
crave and receive of persons concerned whatsoever the 200l.
aforesaid, 108l. 13s. 5d. to his own use, without accounting
or answering for the same, and any residue over and above the
costs of such recovery to be paid to the said Edmund or his
assigns when required. Dated 22 March 27 Henry VI. |
