Endenture of defeasance of the foregoing bond, yef the seid Reynold pay 100 marke by the fest aboveseide, or he or ony other havyng lawfull power, makyng an astate when required suche as the counseill of the seide Thomas can devyse in the maner of Barunhalle co. Essex and all evidens to the seide maner belongyng, to the seide Thomas delivere or do to be delivered yef the seide Reynold, his heires and assignes fayle to pay, that then the seide Thomas withynne a moneth to pay to the seide Reynold or his assignes 100 marc, and at Myghelmas than next 100 marc in full payment for the seide maner, and to suffre the seide Thomas to recuvere hym in courte of recordes the seide maner, also yef the seide Reynold in courte of recorde knowlech a relese of the hole maner of Shenley called Vaches and Verdons co. Anne duchesse of Excestre, late wyfe and executrice of John duc of Excestre, on the one part and Sir John Nevyle knyght, brother unto Rauf nowe erle of Westmerland, Thomas Dalahouse priour of Hautemprice and the covent on the other part. Indenture, reciting that the duc by wille bequeathed all his joialx cleped perree and precious stones to be egally divided bitwene the duchesse and Dame Anne nowe wyfe of Sir John Nevyle his daughter, and witnessing that by agreement all were praised to 574l. 16s. 4d., that Sir John hath receyved of the duchesse the moitee of the same, and graunteth that when she, her executoures or administratoures be troubled, empleded etc. in any court spirituell or temporell by Henry duc of Excestre, his heires, executoures or assignes, or by any to whom the late duc was endetted for the joialx or parsell therof so receyved, or for the value, he shall satisfie them for all costes, damages and losses, whiche shall be assertained by the sayinge of the duchesse uppon hir worshippe and conscience, and after hir decece by othe; that if the seide moitee or any parcell therof, or any dette or damage for the same by Henry duc of Excestre etc. (as above) be recovered ayenst the duchesse etc. withouten fraude or covyne, Sire John shall restore suche as shall be recovered or the value therof with costes, damages and losses, which shall be assertained (as above), that if Sire John, his wyfe or any other in their name trouble, emplede etc. the duchesse etc. for any goodes or joialx to his seide wife belongyng by yift made the tyme of hir baptisme or first mariage to the son of the seide erle of Westmerlande, or of any bequest or other wyse Sire John shall satisfie them for all costes, losses and damages, to be assarteined (as above); and defeasance of the foregoing bond, if Sire John fulfille all covenauntez aforeseide. Declaration of Richard Petworth clerke in his age, where variaunce is had upon an old dede delyvered to him by Thomas Seynt John in wedde for 100s. in 2 Herry V, at which tyme he was person of All Halwen the More London and the seid Thomas parisshe clerk and an honest man, deposing for his trowthe as largely as any man may, that that dede, nowe supposed to be forged, was to his jugement a trewe old dede unrased and with outen suspecion, that he dude do write the copie therof worde by worde in a papir boke of his, and so used other thynges that he resceyved, the whiche he sawe not sither till nowe late (text follows):

That he shewed the deed to Thomas Chaucers squyer, Robert Danvers nowe one of the justices of the common place, Andrewe Sparlyng and other whos names he remembres not at Poules chirche of London at the west dore therof, and they loked and serched every thyng, and understode the seide dede to be trewe withouten forgyng or feynyng, that after the seid Thomas payed the 100s., and he delyvered hym his dede a yen, that afterwarde he hard say that the dede was redde and shewed in open parlement fore the kynge and his lordes, and to the commons, and understode by them all for a trewe dede.
