Westminster.
Peter Alfold of the parish of St. George by 'Estchepe' London 'mercer,' to the king. Recognisance for 20 marks, to be levied etc. in the city of London.
Condition, that Lewis Vaskes master of a ship of Portugal called the 'Saint Mary de Nazareth,' Lupus Vaskes and other the merchants and seamen who in December last touched therewith at the port of Dertmouth co. Devon, have not had free egress from that port, so that they may not sail to Portugal therewith and with their goods and merchandise, or that either the said Lewis or Lupus shall before 10 June next, deliver to the chancellor for the time being letters of Alfonso king of Portugal and Algarve and lord of Ceuta (Cepte) containing his answer to a matter specified in letters of the king now sent over by the said Lupus to the said Alfonso, or if neither of them shall before 10 June next, deliver such letters to the chancellor, then within eight months after one of them shall so deliver letters with the answer of the said Alfonso containing also a reasonable cause wherefore neither of them might deliver the same before the date aforesaid.

Condicion, that John Wyche bring the custumes, subsidies etc. due unto the kyng in his porte of Bristowe fro the day of makyng of his letters patentes unto John Wyche of the office of serchershipp in the said porte in a quarter of a yere folowyng 100 marc in encresse and surplusage over the precedentes of eny quarter two yeres last afore passed in the eschequer accompted, or prevayle the kyng by wey of forfeitez the said 100 marc in the seide quarter, and so quarterly 100 marc as long as he shall occupie the seide office, yf the navye passe and come lade with merchaundise in saufte as hath done hertofore in the said two yeres, provided he shall stonde soole serchour in the saide porte, reteynyng to his proper use half the forfeitz of the goodes etc. by him lawefully forfeited within the seide porte or any porte, place or crike longyng, and occupie the office as long as he berith him wele and prevayleth the kyng; and yf he be discharged of his office, or eny supervisoure or countrouller of the serche intromitte by auctoritee of the kynges lettres patentes in his office duryng the saide quarter and as long as he berith him wele, this reconisaunce be hadde for nought and elles to stonde in his strength and effecte. John Breknok, Thomas Parker, each of the king's household esquire, Homo Bonegrete and Frederick de Palacio, each of Genoa merchant, to the king. Recognisance for 1,200l., to be levied etc. in Buckinghamshire and Herefordshire.
Condition, that whereas by letters patent of 27 May, 36 Henry VI, the king has given licence to Lawrence Barbarigo and Homo Bonegrete, themselves, their factors or attorneys to buy for the king in his name 2,400 sacks of wool, and one or divers times as they please in the ports of London and Cicestre and other ports and places to one of them adjacent to ship the same in his name in carracks, galleys or other vessels and carry it beyond the mountains to Italy and through the straits of Marrok as they please, 1,200 sacks before 1 June, 1459, and 1,200 before 1 June, 1460, rendering to the king 26s. 8d. a sack and the duties of Calais and no more, to be taken to the king's use by the factors or deputies to be by the king or the treasurer appointed without rendering other account, the wool first laded shall be truly carried thither without unlading or demise of any parcel thereof this side Italy, and within one year after shipment letters under seal of some city or town beyond the said mountains and straits shall be brought into chancery witnessing that the same was carried thither.

Condition, that whereas the said John is attached to answer to the said Henry for a debt of 40 marks, and by reason thereof is committed to the Flete prison, he shall appear in person in chancery in the octaves of St. Hilary next and render himself to the said prison, and meantime shall not alien any lands whereof he is now seised or possessed, or whereof any others are seised or possessed to his use.

Condition, that whereas by advice and assent of the council the king has made order that 2,000 sacks of wool of Cotteswold, the 'Marches' and Lempster, or of such wool as used of old time to be worked into cloth beyond the mountains, be yearly carried (thither) in his name during three years, as in an act of council it appears, and the king was indebted in divers sums to Henry Percy earl of Northumberland, elder son of Henry late earl, for keeping of the castle and town of Berwick upon Twede and the Estmarch towards Scotland, in part payment thereof by letters patent of 23 March, 36 Henry VI, he granted licence to Roger Gentyle, his executors, deputies, factors or attorneys native or alien in the ports of London and Cicestre in his name once or divers times as they please to ship in one or more galleys, carracks, ships or vessels 130 sacks, parcel of the 2,000 sacks to be there shipped in his name for the first year beginning 16 July, 35 Henry VI, and 245 sacks of the 2,000 to be shipped in the second year and carried beyond the mountains, and to carry the same beyond the mountains or through the straits of Marrok, reckoning and answering to the king at the rate of 4 marks only a sack for all customs, subsidies and duties thereupon, and to keep those 4 marks in his own hands to be applied in part payment as aforesaid, the whole of that wool shall be taken thither, and within one year after shipment letters testimonial under seal of some good town beyond the mountains shall be brought into chancery witnessing that the same was brought thither.

Condition, that whereas certain hired soldiers of Calais with great power of other subjects of the king joined with them in ships of Calais furnished and arrayed for war did by main force take at Tylbury in the river Thames and bring to Calais three ships of Holand wherein, by virtue of letters patent of 8 December, 35 Henry VI, to John Walcomstraso merchant of Venice and the said Homo, Lawrence Barbarigo and the said Homo as attorneys of the said John did on 25 January, 35 Henry VI, in the port of London ship 122½ sacks 18 cloves of wool in 52 sarplers and two pockets in a ship of John Sotard called 'le James' of Borough, 82½ sacks 14 cloves in 36 sarplers in a ship of James Petirson called 'le Thomas' of Middelburgh, and 67 sacks 19 cloves in 30 sarplers in a ship of John Bartefoteson called 'le Martion' of Ermuth, all to be taken to Seland and thence beyond the mountains, after paying the customs, subsidies etc. thereupon due, as appears by the books of the customers or collectors of customs and subsidies upon wool, hides and woolfells in that port, and did there dispose of the wool at their pleasure, damages 3,200l. as estimated by the king and council, and for restitution to them by advice of the council the king by letters patent of 27 May last, did grant the said Lawrence and Homo licence themselves, their factors or attorneys to buy in his name certain wool, and in the ports of London and Cicestre and other ports and places adjacent once or divers times as they please to ship the same in carracks, galleys or other vessels, and carry it to Italy beyond the mountains or through the straits of Marrok, if within one year it may be duly found by the king or council that the value of the wool taken by the soldiers, and the costs and payments made by the said Lawrence and Homo for recovery thereof amount not to 3,000l. or exceed that sum, they shall abide the judgment of the king by advice of the council concerning all such excess or deficiency.

Order to pay to Margaret countess of Shrewsbury 20 marks a year during the nonage of Thomas viscount Lysle, son and heir of John viscount Lysle who was slain by the king's enemies while on his service in the duchy of Aquitaine, and to pay her the arrears since the said John's death; as for divers considerations him specially moving, by letters patent of 4 September last, the king granted her the wardship of the said Thomas, and from the death of the said John during his nonage for her relief and his maintenance 20 marks a year of the issues, profits etc. of the said county.

To the escheator in Wiltshire. Order to give Henry Ogaun and Emmot his wife seisin of the manor of Westrop otherwise Westhorp otherwise Westhorp and Hampton by Hyworth, a third part of the manor of Estbedwynd, and a moiety of twenty messuages and three virgates of land in Wotton Basset; as it is found by inquisition, taken before William Ovedale late escheator, that William Beauchamp knight, Nicholas Wotton, John Battescombe, Thomas Strangeferie (Strangefere) clerk and John Wotton were seised of the premises, and by charter indented demised the same to Robert Baker and William Wenlok chaplains, their heirs and assigns, by name of the manor and third part aforesaid and a moiety of all their messuages, lands, rents, reversions and services in Wotton Basset, having obtained licence of the king in respect of the said manor, that the said Robert and William by charter indented with like licence demised the said manor, by name of all their messuages, lands, rents, reversions and services in Westhorp and Hampton, the said moiety and third part to Nicholas Wotton for life without impeachment of waste, with remainder to Elizabeth one of the daughters of the said Nicholas and then wife of John Milis and to the heirs of her body, remainder to the right heirs of the said Nicholas, that Elizabeth by John Milis had issue Emmot and died, that Nicholas died seised of the estate aforesaid, with remainder to the said Emmot and to the heirs of her body, and that the manor of Westhorp and Hampton is held in chief by the service of the twentieth part of one knight's fee, the said third part in chief by the service of the fortieth part, and the said moiety of another than the king; and Henry Ogaun has proved the age of the said Emmot in Somerset before John Neweton and William Brownnyng the younger commissaries appointed in that behalf, and the king has taken his fealty.

To the escheator in Warwickshire. Order to remove the king's hand and meddle no further with the manors of Overesley and Merston Botiller, delivering to John Nevyll esquire any issues thereof taken; as it is found by inquisition, taken before the escheator, that Mary who was wife of Ralph Nevyll knight at her death held the manor of Overesley with the advowson or patronage of the abbey of St. Mary and St. John Baptist Alyncestre and the advowson of the chantry of St. Mary in the parish church of Alyncestre, both appendent to that manor time out of mind, and the manor of Merston Botiller, that those manors are held of another than the king, and that the said John is her son and next heir.
To the escheator in Staffordshire. Like order, mutatis mutandis, concerning the manor of Tyrley, held for life by Ralph Nevyll knight by grant of John Nevyll, with reversion to John Nevyll esquire, son and heir of the said Mary and to his heirs.

Order to pay to Thomas Thorp the arrears of 12d. a day since 16 November last, on which date for good service the king granted to him for life the officer of keeper of the privy wardrobe in the Tower of London, to be occupied by himself or by deputy, with the wages, fees, profits and dwellings to that office pertaining of old time, to be taken of the farm of the counties of London and Middlesex and of the issues, profits and revenues of those counties; and 12d. a day were heretofore allowed for the fees and wages aforesaid, as appears by certificate of the treasurer and the barons of the exchequer sent into chancery at the king's command, and remaining upon the chancery file.
