Westminster.
To John Brode of Smethe escheator in Kent. Order to give John Spicer and Joan his wife seisin of the lands of John de Leyhamme, John his son having died within age in the king's wardship; as on 30 April 50 Edward III the late king granted the wardship thereof to Robert de Bealknap until the lawful age of the said Joan, being sister and heir of John the son, and her marriage without paying aught to the king; and now John Spicer, who with the said Robert's assent has taken her to wife, has petitioned the king for livery, shewing that she is of full age, namely seventeen years and upwards, notwithstanding that he has not proved her age by writ de etate probanda as the manner is; and the said Robert has before the council witnessed of a surety that she is of full age, and in consideration that he cannot thereby be damnified, the king with assent of the council has taken the petitioner's fealty.
