(30 Dec.)
St. Peter's, Rome.
(f. 27v.)
Union, as below. The parish church of Lillescleue in the diocese of Glasgow has become void at the apostolic see, and therefore reserved to the pope, by the resignation of Robert Turnbul, made this day to the pope by his proctor Andrew Leal, treasurer of Aberdeen. And the recent petition of the chapter of Glasgow contained that the said church was formerly united to their capitular mensa for the daily distributions to those who are present at divine offices, that its union was dissolved by means of the said Robert, and that he obtained provision of it on its voidance by the said dissolution, and that the fruits etc. of the said mensa are very slight. The pope therefore, at the said petition, hereby unites the said church, value 24l. sterling, to the said mensa (value not expressed) for ever, for the said purpose, and grants that the chapter may have its cure of souls exercised, etc. by a vicar or chaplain removeable at their pleasure. Ad perp. rei mem. Ad apostolice dignitatis apicem. [2 pp.]
1479[–80].
Primo Sexto
Kal. March.
(24 March.)
St. Peter's, Rome.
(f. 29v.)
To William Morland, rector of Sutton in the diocese of Winchester. Dispensation, as below. Papal Lett., Vol. X, p. 136]. The pope now dispenses him (who alleges that he resigned the said church of Ripton Regis, and obtained in virtue of the said dispensation those of Sutton and Torre Draian [sic] in the dioceses of Winchester and Exeter, and still holds them), to receive and retain for life with the said two churches, or with the said two other incompatible benefices, any third benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if a parish church etc. and to resign it, etc., provided that of such three incompatible benefices not more than two be parish churches, etc. Vite etc. [2 pp.—]

Non. April.
(5 April.)
St. Peter's, Rome.
(f. 44r.)
To the bishop of Ross, John de Giliis, a canon of London, and Thomas Hope, a canon of York. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of John Lorde, perpetual vicar of Waltham Magna in the diocese of London, contained that when, as belonged to his office, he charitably monished and counselled Margery, wife of Walter Mildmay, layman, of the said diocese, a parishioner of the said church, to abstain from the excesses of which she was publicly defamed, she, alleging that she had been greatly defamed by the said monition, etc., brought him before Thomas Winterborne, auditor-general of the court of the archbishop of Canterbury; that although he appeared before the said auditor, and requested a copy of the libel or articles produced before the said auditor on Margery's behalf, and a competent term for answering them, the said auditor refused, but, alleging that the said John had not only defamed the said Margery but had also contemned the jurisdiction of the said archbishop, etc., pronounced that he was contumacious and a contemner of the said jurisdiction, etc., and excommunicate, and that he had maliciously defamed the said Margery, and also wrote to the bishop of London and Richard Lycheffelden, chancellor, and other officers of the said bishop (fn. 5) to deprive him of the said vicarage, and often moved them in the matter; and that although, as the said chancellor knew, he dared not reside in the said church and go to it for fear of the said Walter and Margery, and many clerks and laymen and women of the said diocese, adherents of the said Walter and Margery, who tried to take and mutilate him, the said chancellor, falsely alleging that he had absented himself too long from the said church and had deserted it, and ought therefore to be deprived, caused him, ex officio and at the instance of the said Walter and Margery and clerks etc., to be cited before him within too short a term, wherefore he appealed to the apostolic see but, hindered by a lawful impediment, has not prosecuted his appeal within the proper time. The pope therefore orders the above three, if they find what is alleged about the said impediment to be true, to summon the said Walter and Margery, and the said other clerks, laymen and women and others concerned, hear both sides, taking cognizance also of the principal matter, and decide what is just, without appeal, causing their decision to be observed by ecclesiastical censure. Humilibus etc. [12/3 pp.]
