1359. 8 Kal. Feb. Avignon. (f. 16d.)	To king Edward. The pope has received his letters, in answer to which he says that he had written to him in French by the hand of Adam de Hilton, the king's secretary, recommending to him Thomas, bishop of Ely. Before the king's letters reached him, the pope heard that many of the king's officials and ministers were injuring the said bishop and his officials, and therefore calls on him to act as a catholic prince in defence of churches and ecclesiastics in his realm, and to put an end to the matter of complaint. Touching this the said secretary will verbally lay the pope's wishes before the king.
