Mandate—the pope having been informed by John Ocany (or Otany), an Augustinian canon of St. Mary's, Inismor Lochagamna, in the diocese of Ardagh, that Nemeas Ofeargail, prior of the same, is a notorious fornicator and concubinary, with offspring living, has alienated many of the goods, leads a very dissolute life, and has committed divers other excesses and crimes [not here mentioned]—seeing that John, from fear of Nemeas's power, cannot safely meet him within the city or diocese of Ardagh, if John will accuse Nemeas before them, to summon Nemeas, and if they find the above to be true to deprive Nemeas, and in that event to collate and assign the said priory, which is conventual and independent, value not exceeding 56 marks sterling, to John; whether it become void by such deprivation or be void by the death of Emundus Megyndmora, or in any other way. To Master Peter de Monte, pievano of the pieve (plebanus plebis) of St. George, Illasi (de Ilasio (fn. 3) ) in the diocese of Verona, I.U.D., an apostolic notary, residing in the realm of England. Mandate, at the recent petition of Maurice Gregorii, professed of the order of Friars Preachers—containing that he entered the said order in his youth and after remaining in it for more than eighteen years, without asking or obtaining licence of his superior, left the house in which he had made his profession, and the habit of his order, and betook himself to the Cistercian monastery of Tintern (Kinternia) in the diocese of Ferns, got the abbot and convent thereof to give him its regular habit and to receive him as a monk, and has stayed there for more than eight years, without making any profession—to absolve him from his apostasy and from the sentences of excommunication etc. which he has incurred, enjoining penance, and, after temporary suspension from the execution of his orders, to dispense him on account of irregularity, and dispense him to remain in the said monastery and order. (fn. 5) Mandate, at the recent petition of Nicholas Asshby, a monk of St. Peter's, Westminster, immediately subject to the Roman church—containing that formerly, on the voidance by the death of Robert Bathley of the priorship, which is perpetual, and is a major or principal dignity after the abbatial, or a prelacy, or at least (saltem) an office, the convent, to whom by ancient custom the election of the perpetual prior belongs, elected the said Nicholas, a priest, who had the election confirmed, likewise in accordance with ancient custom, by abbot Richard—if he find the said election and confirmation lawful, to confirm them. Confirmation as below. The recent petition of Robert Malorre, prior of the Hospitallers' priory of England, contained that the master and brethren of the convent of Rhodes by their letters granted and committed to him for ten years the said priory of England, with all its members, houses, chambers (cameris), rights, jurisdictions and appurtenances, even as his predecessors had held and possessed, that is to say, with the burdens, honours, houses of the said priory, wheresoever situate, and the chambers (cameris) assigned to him, namely Clerkynwell, Cressyng, Sanford, Balshale, and Graston (rectius Grafton), and all their rights and appurtenances; and that afterwards they prolonged the said ten years to the term of his life; and that he, like his said prodecessors, continues to hold etc. and peaceably possess, as members of the said priory and chambers (camerarum), with all their rights and appurtenances, the manors of Sutton at Hone, Hetheryngton, Sumptyng, Sheplegh, Compton and Berwyk, Sutton in Essex, in each of whose chapels a perpetual chaplain is kept, likewise the possessions or estates (poderia) of Mulbroke and Sumpton, Sutton Parva, Dokesworthe, Cardyngton and Prouekele and Copyngthorp and Colpyt, and the parish churches of Gyllesburgh with Ravensthorp, Langford, Wilbram and Staunton; but that he cannot prove by public documents, although there is not and never has been the least doubt, the rights of the said priory in respect of the said parish churches, manors, etc., and whether the said churches, manors etc. belong to the said chambers (cameras) or whether they belong to the said members. In order to remove any possibility of doubt, the pope, at Robert's said petition, stating that the said letters exemplified the ordinances of the late Raymund Berengarii, sometime master of the hospital, about the priory of England and its rights, appurtenances, etc., hereby confirms the said ordinances and the said grant or commission and its prolongation, together with all the said manors, possessions, estates (poderia) and parish churches, as possessed by him and to be possessed by him for life. Mandate to collate and assign to Michael de Plesseyo, preceptor of the Augustinian house of St. Anthony, Rouen, the preceptorship of the house of St. Anthony, London, of the same order, which is general, depends on the monastery of St. Anthony in the diocese of Vienne, is wont to be governed by canons thereof, of whom he is one, non-elective, value not exceeding 400 gold florins of the camera, void, and therefore reserved (under the pope's late reservation of all general preceptorships of all orders), by the death without the Roman court of John Snell (fn. 6); summoning and removing John Carpenter, priest, a canon of the said order, S.T.M., who, when a secular and before making his profession, obtained it after the pope's said reservation, under pretext of pretended letters of the abbot of the said monastery, to whom the provision ordinarily belongs, and has unduly detained possession for about six years; notwithstanding that he holds the said preceptorship of St. Anthony, Rouen, with cure and value not exceeding 20l. of petits tournois, which he has hereby indult to hold in commendam for life with the said general preceptorship. Mandate, the pope having been informed by John Okeolayn, a canon of the Augustinian monastery of St. Mary, Cross (de Cruce), in the diocese of Killala (Aladen), that Thomas Baret, prior called warden of the priory called wardenship of the cell of Holy Trinity, of the said order and diocese, has dilapidated its goods, is a notorious fornicator and has committed many other crimes [not here stated], if the said John, who is the son of unmarried parents and is a priest, will accuse Thomas before him, to summon Thomas, and if he find the above to be true, to deprive him, and in that event to collate and assign the said priory, which is not conventual, nor a dignity or personatus, is not elective, depends on the monastery of St. Mary (sic) Buttevant (de Botonia), of the said order, in the diocese of Cloyne, and is wont to be governed by canons thereof, has cure and does not exceed 12 marks sterling in yearly value, to John; whether it become void by the said deprivation, or be void by the death of Emundus Baret, or in any other way. Lately the pope, upon being informed by Maurice that William Ocorcrayn, then rector of Athnarig, had dilapidated the rectory, and had committed perjury, simony and other crimes [not here named], ordered the dean of Clonfert, if Maurice would accuse William before him, to summon William, and if he found the above or enough thereof to be true, to deprive William, and in that event to collate and assign the rectory to Maurice. At Maurice's recent petition—containing that Thomas Mcacdagay (rectius Mcacdagan), dean of Clonfert, proceeding to the execution of the said mandate, duly made collation and provision to Maurice, who has, with the assent of the lay patron, held possession for some time; and adding that, inasmuch as the said mandate made no mention that the rectory, value not exceeding 25 marks sterling, was of lay patronage, and that there is therefore a doubt as to the validity of the said collation and provision—the pope grants to Maurice, who is a priest, that the said collation and provision and their consequences shall hold good from the present date, as if the said mention had been made. Relaxation, at his recent petition—containing that upon the voidance of the said church, the canons thereof, of whom he was one, assembled to elect a bishop, swore each for himself that if elected he would not take or exact the tithe of the crofts of the canons of the said church (deciman de croftis canonicorum dicte ecclesie nuncupatam), belonging to the bishop for the time being; that he, after taking the said oath, was elected by the canons; and that it redounds to the prejudice of the said church—of the said oath, absolution therefrom, and grant that he may and shall take and exact the said tithe, which shall as long as he lives be applied to the fabric of the said church. To the abbots of St. John's, Tuam, and Ballintober (Fontis Sancti Patricii) in the diocese of Tuam, and the provost of Tuam. Mandate—the pope having been informed by Robert Baret, canon of Killala, that Robert Valen, provost of the same church, is a notorious fornicator, has dilapidated the provostship, and committed perjury and many other excesses and crimes [not here named],—if they find Baret (who is in his twenty-fourth year, and was lately dispensed by authority of the ordinary, as the son of unmarried parents, great nobles, related in the third degree of kindred, to be promoted to minor orders and hold a benefice without cure; and who, from fear of Valen's power, cannot safely meet him in the city or diocese of Killala) to be fit, and the above to be true, and if Baret will accuse Valen before them, to summon Valen and deprive him, and in that event to collate and assign the said provostship, a non-major non-elective dignity with cure, value not exceeding 16 marks sterling, to Baret; notwithstanding that he holds a canonry and prebend of the said church, value not exceeding 2 marks.
