Licence for Letard de Henyn, king's yeoman, to grant the manor of Arneleye—which John de Burgo the elder held in chief of Henry III. and granted to Robert, bishop of Bath and Wells, who surrendered it to the king, who granted it in fee tail to the said Letard, at the service of one knight's fee—to Roger de Mortuo Mari, for the latter to hold in fee simple, at the same service.

Acquittance to Master Raymond de Nogeriis, pope's chaplain, for the payment to Giles de Audenard, king's clerk, keeper of the Tower of London, of 44 marks 21d. of the arrears of the tenth for two years, for the works of the Tower.

Simple protection, for one year, in Gascony for John, vicomte of Tartas (Tartacen').

June 6. Westminster.

Whereas Henry III. granted to John de Warenna, earl of Surrey, that out of the 10,000 marks, wherein the earl was bound to him for a trespass, the earl should pay that sum at the rate of 200 marks a year, the king in consideration of the earl, at his instance, releasing to Robert, archbishop of Canterbury, and his successors, and to the prior and convent of Christchurch, Canterbury, and their successors, and the men and tenants of the fees of both of them, from paying toll in all the markets, towns, lands and fairs of the earl and his heirs throughout England, has pardoned the earl 1,000 marks of the said 10,000 marks, so that he pay nothing for the next five years from Easter at the Exchequer, and he and his heirs then continue payments until the residue is paid.

Mandate to Roger de Leyc[estre], king's clerk, to deliver to William de Middelton, king's clerk, appointed, during pleasure, to the custody of the rolls and writs of the Bench, all the rolls and writs, as well of the time of Henry III. as of the king.

Protection and safe-conduct for Manseronus de Spoleto and Roger de London, envoys of pope Innocent, to Ireland, on the affairs of the church, for as long as they are engaged there ; directed to bailiffs and others of Ireland.

Safe-conduct, for one year, for them.

Grant to Stephen de Monte Ferrandi, to whom the king granted, during the minority of the heirs, out of the lands late of John de Maundevill, tenant in chief, land to the value of 50l. a year, by extent to be made by Ralph de Sandwyco, king's steward, for the maintenance of the said Stephen on the king's service, of the ploughs and whole stock and other goods in the lands so assigned to him.

Grant to the sub-prior and convent of Bilsinton that whereas by the charters of John Maunsel, their founder, and the confirmation thereof by Henry III. which the king has inspected, they have the right to the custody of their house during voidance, and to elect a prior without asking licence from any person, the late taking into the king's hands of their house, during voidance, shall not be drawn into a custom, or be to their prejudice, provided that when they shall elect a prior they shall present him to the king for the royal assent to his election, and the mandate to the archbishop of Canterbury, and that when the prior shall have been confirmed he shall come to the king with letters testimonial of his confirmation, so that the king may command them to fully restore the temporalities of the house to him.

Grant to Eleanor, the king's consort, in part payment of her debts, of all that pertains to the king out of the trespasses committed by Aldebrand de Luka, or his men in his name, in the time of Henry III. and of the king, in dealing with wools or in exporting wools out of the realm against the prohibition of Henry III. or in communicating against the said prohibition with the Flemish merchants or others.

Pardon to Alice, daughter of Geoffrey de Everle, at the instance of Master Geoffrey de Everleye, clerk of the king of Spain, for the death of Adam de Gillingham, her husband.

Mandate to the justiciary of Ireland to give the royal assent to the election of an abbot of St. Mary's, Trum, and, when the election shall have been confirmed by the diocesan, to take the fealty of the abbot-elect and to deliver the temporalities of the abbey to him after having received the customary patent, under the seals of the abbot and chapter, that the grace thus granted to them shall not be to the king's prejudice or be drawn into a precedent.

Mandate to the seneschal of Gascony and the constable of the castle of Bordeaux to pay to Master Adam de Norff[olk], king's clerk, 100l. of Bordeaux as a gift for the despatch of his own business.

Grant to Master Adam de Norff[olk], constable of the castle of Bordeaux, that he shall have his wages in the constableship as other constables have been want to receive them, so long as he shall remain in it by the king's command.

Mandate to him to deliver to Luke de Tany, seneschal of Gascony, by letters patent sealed with the seal of the court of Gascony, all the moneys which he may receive from the issues of the king's lands in Gascony or elsewhere in those parts in the king's name, for the purpose of expediting the king's business in those parts.

Grant to Joseph de Cauncy, prior of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England, that whereas he acknowledged the receipt on deposit in his house of Clerkenwell, London, of 2000 marks which Master Raymond de Nogeriis, papal chaplain and nuncio of the apostolic see, and friar John de Derlington, of the order of Preachers, caused to be delivered to him by the hands of the collectors of the tenth in the dioceses of Chichester and Winchester under a stipulation to restore it on demand at the New Temple, London, and whereas the king has received the said sum from the said master and friar for the expediting his own affairs, he and the fraternity shall receive 2,000 marks out of the first moneys taken to the exchequer, whether it come from the fifteenth, the treasury, or any other source, before the quinzaine of Michaelmas next.

Letters for Luke de Tany, going beyond seas, nominating Walter de Tany and John Legat his attorneys for one year.

Confirmation to Robert archbishop of Canterbury of the licence granted, as a writing between the parties testifies, to him, at the king's instance, by Gregory de Rockele, the mayor, and the other barons of the city of London, to stop two lanes near his place of Castle-Baynard and the Tower of Monfychet for the enlargement of the said place, provided he should assign to them a like way for the commonalty of the city, the archbishop having now caused to be prepared a better and fitter way, so that neither of the parties shall be accused of changing ways or of purpresture before the justices in eyre at the Tower of London.

And they have other letters without the clause "as a writing, &c."

Mandate to William de Middelton to deliver the rolls and writs of the king's Jewry to Adam de Wynton to keep during pleasure.

Protection with clause rogamus, for three years, for the brethren of the house of St. Margaret the Virgin and St. Anthony, Wymburneminstre, and their proctors.

The like, for five years, for Ralph de Rading, Robert de Bonevill, Robert de Calueton and Thomas de Popelton, proctors of the house of St. Robert, Knaresburgh, of the order of Holy Trinity and of the Ransom of Captives of the Holy Land.

Mandate to Luke de Tany, seneschal of Gascony, to maintain, protect, and defend Ernald de Sancto Germano in his rights and possessions, in which he is in many ways aggravated, disturbed, and molested by Constance late wife of Henry de Alemannia and certain of her people, and to show himself favourable to the said Ernald in his causes, and do him justice when he shall come before him, and in case the prosecution of his right should be delayed by appeal or other undue procedure of the adverse party, to give him reasonable support in his increased expenses in some of the king's places or bailiwicks.

Mandate to the men of the county of Devon to diligently assist the sheriff in the arrest of the evildoers who, as it appears from the complaints of many persons, go about the county committing robberies and homicides therein.

Grant to R[obert] archbishop of Canterbury of all the grain sown in the lands of the archbishopric and pertaining to the king on the day of the restitution thereof to him, with remission to him of all the king's costs thereon.

Simple protection, until Michaelmas, in Ireland for Gilbert le Sauvage, going beyond seas on his own affairs.

Safe-conduct, until Michaelmas, for Alexander le Tayllur, yeoman of A. king of Scotland, taking six horses of that king from London to Scotland.

Pardon to Albric de Capeles of his outlawry for larceny, robbery and other trespasses, the process of the appeal against him made by Laurence de Sancto Edmundo, the king's approver, having been irregular.

June 16. Chichester.

Appointment of Philip de Wileghby and Ralph de Broghton, king's clerks, to make scrutiny of the debts in the chests of the Jewry of London, and they are to certify the king concerning the amount of such debts, and the names of the debtors ; with mandate to the justice assigned for the custody of the Jews to give them access to the chests.

June 18. Chichester.

Grant to William de Selesy and Robert de Purle, canons of Chichester, and Ivo de Whistring, executors of St. Richard, sometime bishop of Chichester, and of Master Walter de Gloucester, sometime dean of Chichester and keeper of the bishopric, that they receive 200l. due from Henry III. to the aforesaid bishop and 100l. due from Henry III. to Stephen now bishop of Chichester, out of the issues of the bishopric received by that king by the hands of the dean aforesaid, while the said Stephen was acting out of the kingdom in the court of Rome, out of the arrears of the farm of the town of Southampton and of the fine last made by the bailiffs of that town with the king and of the said farm of the coming year.

Mandate to the bailiffs and good men of Southampton to make the payments above mentioned.

June 24. Lewes.

Writ de intendendo directed to the bailiffs and barons of Sandwich, Dover, Hethe, Romen[hale], Winchelsea, Rye, Hastings and Pevenese, in favour of Luke de Luka and Donatus Lambard, king's merchants, and Ralph de Drokenesford, king's clerk, appointed keepers and bailiffs throughout the realm of the new custom on wool. Protection, until two years after Michaelmas, for John Bardun and Michael Bardun, merchants, and they are not to be distrained for any debt except those for which they are sureties or principal debtors.

July 2. Romney.

Letters for the abbot of Fecamp, nominating Stephen de Lond[on] and James le Herice his attorneys.

Mandate to Peter de Thelnetham to keep until further orders a falcon, which it is alleged he has in his hands, belonging to Anthony Bek, king's clerk, and which was delivered to him by certain persons in his parts.

June 17. Aldingbourn.

Appointment, during pleasure, of Robert de Offord to the custody of the land of Ireland as justiciary thereof, and mandate to the archbishops, bishops, abbots, priors, earls, barons, freemen, and to all bailiffs and faithful people of Ireland, to assist him in correcting divers injuries and trespasses done to the king and others in the said land and in preserving the king's peace.

The like addressed to all bailiffs and faithful people of Ireland.

Mandate to Geoffrey de Gyenvill to deliver to him by indenture the whole of the king's land of Ireland and the office of justiciary aforesaid, with the castles, manors, lands, tenements, armour, victuals, munitions, stock and all other the king's goods there.

Power to Robert de Offord to admit to the king's peace all and singular the English or Irish who have taken part against the king and who wish to come into the king's peace.

June 16. Chichester.

Mandate to the treasurer and chamberlains of the exchequer of Dublin, to pay him 500l. a year granted to him for the support of himself and 20 men-at-arms, so long as he remains in the said office.

Mandate to the said justiciary, and S. bishop of Waterford, treasurer, to provide the king with discreet bailiffs and ministers in Ireland who shall faithfully keep the bailiwicks and offices committed to them, and render their account of the same, and answer for the issues thereof at the exchequer of Dublin, so that whatever ought to be paid or delivered to any person on behalf of the king in the said land may be paid and delivered by the treasurer and chamberlains of the exchequer aforesaid.

July 26. Westminster.

Mandate to Thomas de Clare to deliver to the said justiciary the king's castle and county of Limerick in his custody.

The like to Walter de la Haye, or whoever holds the castle of Dungarvan, to deliver the said castle to the said justiciary.

The like to S. bishop of Waterford, treasurer of Ireland, to deliver the castle of Dublin to him.

July 24. Westminster.

The like to the same, to pay to the justiciary so much of the money arising from the issues of the land of Ireland as he shall demand from time to time for the custody of the said land.

Grant to the said justiciary of so much of the issues of the land of Ireland as shall be sufficient for the expenses of himself and his retinue in the custody thereof; the whole of the said issues to be at the disposal of the said Robert for the said purpose.

Mandate to the steward of Ulster to deliver to him the land of Ulster and all the king's castles therein, which are in the custody of the said steward.

June 26. Lewes.

Mandate to the collectors of the fifteenth in the county of York, and to the sheriff of that county, to pay to Luke de Luka, Holland de Podio, and Bartholomew Baudini and their fellows, merchants of Lucca, all the money which they have received or are about to receive by 8 September next, from the said fifteenth, to be placed in deposit by the said merchants where the king has commanded them by word of mouth.

The like to the collectors of the fifteenth in the counties of Lincoln, Nottingham, Kent, Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridge, Huntingdon, Essex, and Leicester, and to the sheriffs thereof.

The like to the abbot of Waltham, collector of the fifteenth in the county of Essex.

Appointment of Luke de Tany, knight, seneschal of Gascony, as the king's proctor in the court of the king of France, the king's lord, and of Sir Simon the legate of the apostolic see in the kingdom of France, with regard to matters specially concerning the king and his goods in the duchy of Aquitaine.

July 3. Romney.

Commission of oyer and terminer to William de Northburgh and Guy Gubaud, it having been shown on behalf of Roger son of Benedict, William Braund, Henry Gopyl, Martin le Cordewaner, Simon Unwin, William du Clay, Geoffrey de Hampton, William de Hampton, Roger le Parcheminer, Matthew Dogenet and John Dowel, citizens of Lincoln, that whereas William Fressevede, merchant, deraigned in the king's court by judgment of the court 500l. against the commonalty of Lincoln for a trespass done to him by the commonalty, and, afterwards, at the king's instance, pardoned the said commonalty 100 marks of the said sum, so that they should pay him 400l. and 50 marks, and 36 men of the said town were elected by common consent of the commonalty to assess the said money proportionably on the commonalty, but refused to do anything before they received letters patent sealed with the seal of the commonalty that the latter would stand by their assessment, and when the said letters were received, assessed the whole of the said money upon the said Roger and the others, and decreed that they should be distrained for the same, the said 36 and the rest of the commonalty being entirely exonerated from payment, and when the said Roger and others feeling themselves thereby aggrieved wished to complain to the king, while he was lately at Lincoln, the said 36 men agreed that if the aforesaid Roger and the others would not so complain, they would amend their doings so that the aforesaid Roger and the others should not be aggrieved, and destroyed and annulled the said letters; but when the king had departed from the town they made new letters like to those destroyed, and unjustly caused the said Roger and others to be distrained for the whole of the said money.

The like to John de Luvetot and G. de Leukenore, on complaint by Robert del Estre that whereas he had never enfeoffed by deed his son John of a messuage and two carucates of land in Abbethrop, co. Northampton, nor had done any other thing whereby the freehold of the said messuage and land could be conferred upon the said John, but had cultivated the land with his demesne ploughs, beasts, and men, and received the issues until Friday before Martinmas, 3 Edw. I. when the said John unjustly disseised the said Robert his father of the said messuage and land, whereupon the said Robert arramed an assize of novel disseisin against the said John before the king when he was last at Northampton, and the said John gave back the said messuage and land by deed to the said Robert pending the taking of the said assize, and the said Robert was in seisin thereof until the Feast of Ascension next following, at which time, in the absence of the said Robert, the sheriff of the county of Northampton, seised the said messuage and land into the king's hands for debts incurred by the said Robert while sheriff of the county of Cambridge and Huntingdon, and held them until at the procurement of the said John, who suggested that his father had enfeoffed him of the said messuage and land, and that he had been in seisin thereof fifteen years and more, the said John obtained a writ to the sheriff, if this were so, to restore it to him ; whereby the sheriff, after causing inquisition to be taken by friends of John and enemies of Robert, who was absent and never put himself on that inquisition, gave back the said messuage and land to the said John, and another assize of novel disseisin, arraigned between the said parties before Master Roger de Seyton, has not been able to be taken.

Grant, in fee simple, to Matthew de Horne of Winchelsea, of a place 100 feet by 50 feet, lying between his house in Winchelsea and the king's port there, so that the said Matthew may make a quay upon the said place for the defence of his house against inundation of the sea, and build upon it.

July 8. Canterbury.

Acquittance to the abbot and convent of Fountains for the payment by the hand of Anthony Bek, king's clerk, archdeacon of Durham, of 990l. sterling, debts of the king's Jewry, wherein they were bound to Joceus, nephew of Aaron, and Bonamicus, Jews of York : and the king discharges and will hold them and the said Jews harmless thereof.

July 7. Canterbury.

Pardon to Brice de la Rye of his trespasses during the late perturbation of the realm.

July 8. Canterbury.

Mandate to all sheriffs, bailiffs, and faithful people, on behalf of brother Hugh, proctor-general of St. Edmund, and of the abbot and convent of Pontigny, in the diocese of Auxerre, (Aucisiod',) to arrest and detain all persons collecting alms in the name of the said abbey, and not having letters testimonial of the said proctor-general, he having complained to the king that dishonest persons are going about England falsely asserting themselves to be proctors of the said abbey, and collecting money and goods in the name of the aforesaid saint and converting the same to their own use.

Simple protection, until a year after Michaelmas, for the master of the Maison Dieu, Dover, going beyond seas on the affairs of his house.

The like for two years for Peter Loupes, merchant.

Appointment of Alexander de Kirketon to the custody during pleasure of the abbey of Rievaulx, to apply the issues to the payment of its debts.

Licence for Bartholomew de Avylers, who holds of the king by serjeanty, to sell to Walter de Shelphangre, a messuage and 60 acres of land in Shelphangre, as it appears by inquisition made by Richard de Holebrok, steward of the king's lands in the county of Norfolk, and also by his testimony before the king, that the residue of the lands of the said Bartholomew will suffice to the doing of the said serjeanty.

July 18. Tower of London.

Pardon to Walter de Sancryf, for the death some time since of William de Sancto Nicholao, chaplain, and of his abjuration of the land of Ireland for the same, as it appears by inquisition made by Thomas de Clare, that he killed him in self-defence.

July 19. Westminster.

Mandate to Luke de Luka, and his fellows, merchants of Lucca, to pay to Henry de Pamy, 400 marks, provided that the said Henry give up certain letters patent of Henry III. granting him a yearly fee of 80 marks, and relinquish all claim to the said fee and the arrears thereof, the king, after consulting with the Council, being of opinion that the said Henry cannot of right take anything by the said grant of Henry III. but wishing to favour the said Henry on account of the good service done by him for the king in parts beyond seas.

Appointment during pleasure of Henry de Ethlingthorp, kinsman of William de Kirkeby, a paralitic, now in the custody of John de Kirkeby, who claims to be his heir, whereby danger might arise to the said William, to the custody of the lands and goods of the said William.

Mandate to Luke de Luka, and his fellows, merchants of Lucca, to pay 40l. out of the king's money in their possession to Baldwin the castellan of Araz, knight, for the arrears of a fee which Hugh de Crek, deceased, used to receive from the king at the exchequer of Dublin by the king's letters patent which the said Baldwin has surrendered.

Acquittance to Master Raymond de Nogeriis, pope's chaplain, of 55l. sterling of the arrears of the tenth granted to the king for two years delivered by him for the works of the Tower of London, to Giles de Audenard, clerk, keeper of the said Tower.

Licence for Salomon son of Jacob, Jew of Lincoln, to sell to Master Durand de Neuport, a debt in which Walter son of Jordan de Neuport was bound to the said Jew.

Pardon to Thomas de Walsokne of an outlawry published against him for assaulting the castle of William Belet of Marham, it having been found by an inquisition made by the sheriff and coroners of Norfolk that the said Thomas was not guilty of the said trespass alleged against him, that he was not in England when it was committed, and that he knew nothing of the process and prosecution of outlawry against him therefor.

July 22. Westminster.

Mandate to the prior of Lenton, collector of the fifteenth in the counties of Nottingham and Derby, and to the sheriff of the said counties, to pay to Luke de Luka, Rollandinus de Podio, and their fellows, merchants of Lucca, all the money which they have received and are about to receive to 8 September next from the said fifteenth, to be placed in deposit by the said merchants where the king has commanded them by word of mouth.

Association of John Bek with Master Roger de Seyton to take inquisitions as to the plea which is before him and his fellows, justices of the Bench, between John de Stoke and Ralph de Wodeburgh, tenant, touching two tofts and land in Syreston, and as to a plea between the same parties touching possessions in Stoke, Balderton, Newerk and Eyleston.

Grant to William de Bello Campo, earl of Warwick, to whom Henry III. gave licence to pay the debts he owed him at the rate of 10l. a year (which grace the king accepts), that, in case the earl die before fully paying, the king will not take the earl's goods into his hands, but permit the earl's executors to have the administration of his goods, and will betake himself for the residue of the said debts to his heirs.

Mandate to the persons appointed to pay the king's debts to pay to Adam de Sancto Albano 69 marks as soon as they are able, as it appears by inquisition made by Ralph de Sandwico that he was not against the king either in the battle of Evesham or elsewhere, and that he lent that sum at that time to the king's use to Anthony Bek, king's clerk, as the latter has acknowledged before the king.

Mandate to the abbot and convent of Stratford to pay to Master Simon de Beauveys, king's serjeant and surgeon, the 10l. of rent surrendered and quit claimed to the king by Ralph de Wodeburg and granted to the said Simon and his heirs, the said 10l. a year to be allowed to the said abbot and convent out of their farm of Hammes and Subyry.

Mandate to Robert de Ufford, justiciary of Ireland, not to exact or allow to be exacted more than half a mark for each sack of wool for the new custom of wool in Ireland, certain merchants of Ireland having shown to the king that the collectors of the said custom, because the sacks of the parts of Ireland are heavier than the sacks of the parts of England, exact from the said merchants 10s. a sack, while for the sacks of English wool which, though of less weight, are of equal value, half a mark a sack only is exacted.
