June 10. Westminster.

Licence in mortmain for Thomas le Barbur, citizen of London, to sell to John de Colecestre, sometime almoner of Henry III. his house in the parish of St. Nicholas-in-the-Shambles, London, to the use of the Friars Minors of London.

Licence for John de Boun son of Franco de Boun, in consideration of his service in Wales, to sell all the lands which he holds of the king in Ireland to Master John de Saunford, king's clerk, in consideration of the latter's services in Ireland.

Vacated because on the roll of the seventh year.

Simple protection, for one year, for Master Richard de Lillingestan, staying in England on his own affairs, and those of the master and brethren of the Knights Templars in England.

Acknowledgment of the delivery by Joseph de Chauncy, prior of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England, on Thursday in Whitsun week, 8 Edward I. at Westminster, to Geoffrey de Neubald, chancellor of the Exchequer, of three writings obligatory under the seal of the king, to wit, one of a debt of 3,000 marks sterling, to Opizus de Farignano and Osbert de Furno, citizens of Piacenza, merchants of the society of Bernard Scot (Bernardi Scotti) of Piacenza, and other merchants and citizens of that town of the said society; another of a debt of 8,000 marks sterling, long since owing to Labrus Vulpelli, citizen and merchant of Lucca, and other merchants of Lucca of that society; and a third, whereby the king empowered, in his second year, John de Turno, treasurer of the house of the Temple, Paris, to contract a loan in the king's name from merchants or creditors, collectively or individually, of 23,560l. 16s. 8d. of Tours, to cover a loan of like amount made to the king by him.

Grant to Stephen le Tot of Westdun and Joan his wife, for a fine of five marks, that they may have those 7 marks of rent in Suthmorton which are of the king's fee, and which John de Nevill gave them in frank-marriage of the said Joan.

Safe-conduct, for one year, for Burges[ius] Fulberti de Florencia and Guy his brother, going beyond seas.

Acquittance to Joseph de Chauncy, sometime treasurer of the Exchequer, of the writings, silver, gold, jewels, and all other goods of the king which have been at any time in his hands, and which he has surrendered.

Letters for the abbot of Citeaux nominating Imbert le Convers of Citeaux and John de Kay ton his attorneys for two years.

Grant to Edmund, earl of Lancaster, the king's brother, of Matlak, Underwod and Bredlawe, with other demesnes and hamlets, mines of lead and iron, passages, fairs, markets, view of frank-pledge, and other things which are appurtenances of the manors of Wirkesworth and Esseburn, and of the wapentake of Wirkesworth, co. Derby, granted lately by the king's charter to the said earl in exchange for the counties and castles of Carmarthen and Cardigan, the same not having been specified as appurtenances of the manors and wapentake aforesaid in the said charter.

Mandate to Gregory de Rokesle and Orlandinus de Podio, keepers of the exchange of London, to pay out of the new money therein to Guy, count of Flanders 150 marks for Easter term last past of his yearly fee of 300 marks, granted to him by the king.

Letters for the prior of the hospital of Rocedevall nominating Henry son of William de Smalebrok his attorney for two years.

Mandate to Baroncinus Gualteri, Richard Guidicionis and their fellows, merchants of Lucca, to pay to Medichus and Acelinus and their fellows, merchants of Florence, of the society of Thomas Spilliati de Florencia 517 marks at the Purification and Midsummer, in which W. bishop of Norwich is bound to the latter, and they are to take a bond from the bishop that he will repay them at the appointed terms, which if he fail to do the king promises to do.

Licence for Master Thomas de Ingeldesthorp to enfeoff John de Ingeldesthorp, tenant in chief, of the mauor of Belasise, in Hakebech, co. Norfolk, at a rent of 40l. to Thomas for so long as Thomas lives, and if John die during the lifetime of Thomas and the manor falls into the king's hands by reason of John's death, Thomas is still to receive the said rent for the rest of his life.

Licence for Bernard de Montibus, citizen and merchant of Cork, to go with his things and merchandise throughout the kingdom and to trade; and exemption to him from distraint for any debt of which he is not chief debtor or surety, for two years.

William Purcel, canon of Chirebury, bringing news of the resignation of Osbert his prior, has letters of licence to elect.

Pardon to William de Valencia, the king's uncle, of the trespass committed by Walter de Raddesham, sometime steward of his liberty of Weseford, in his name and by reason of his stewardship, in pardoning Eustace de Rupe and David his brother for the death of John Dun, who was killed within the bishopric of Ferns, and in taking the ransom for his death from the said Eustace and David.

Pardon to Elias de Rabayne, for a fine of 500 marks, of what pertains to the king for his flight and taking sanctuary in the church of Dorchester for certain trespasses laid upon him before John de Reygate and his fellows, justices in eyre in the county of Dorset, and of the trespasses of which he was indicted before them in their eyre aforesaid and of the amercements for the same.

Appointment of William son of Warin as bailiff in Ireland to keep and hold there during pleasure the four pleas belonging to the crown in all liberties and cross-lands (crociis) of archbishoprics, bishoprics, abbeys and elsewhere in the land of Ulster, and to take custody of all knights' fees held of the king there.

Pardon to Geoffrey de Lucy, for a fine of 100l., of all trespasses in the forests of Henry III. in taking venison therein.

Power to Robert de Ufford, justiciary of Ireland, with the counsel and consent of S. bishop of Waterford, the treasurer of Ireland, to enfeoff any men he pleases of the king's waste lands in Ireland, to be held by knight or other service, or to demise the same to fee-farm, or for a certain rent, as may appear to the said Robert and the bishop to be most expedient to the king and his heirs, retaining the better places and sites for the building of towns and castles.

Pardon, at the instance of Robert de Ufford, to Benedict de Dufford, —after inspecting letters patent of Henry III. pardoning him the deaths of John son of William de Horning and William Chosayre—of the king's suit for the robbery committed upon the said John and William and others at the same day and hour as the said persons were killed.

Grant to Robert de Ufford, who has exchanged the 50l. yearly for life which he used to receive from the mills of Tikehull, for the custody of the castle and town of Orford, that if the king resume the latter he will first restore to him the said 50l. yearly.

Mandate in pursuance to Richard de Holebrok, king's steward, to deliver to him the said castle and town.

Pardon to Giles de Fissheburn for marrying Margery, late the wife of Alexander Luterel, who held of Geoffrey Luterel, tenant in chief.

Pardon to Robert Bagod, sometime constable of Limerick castle and sheriff of the county of Limerick, of all escapes of hostages and prisoners and others delivered to him for bail during his custody of the said castle.

Simple protection, for one year, in Ireland, for Richard de Burgo, earl of Ulster.

Appointment of Salomon de Roffa, Richard de Boyland, Robert Fulconis and William de Braiboef as justices in eyre this turn in the counties of Devon, Cornwall, Wilts and Southampton.

Appointment of John de Fyfide to make view of the state of the debts due to the king and from the king to others in Ireland, and to provide in every port where wools and hides are laden and exported two good and true men to collect the new custom thereon until further orders, and in other ways take measures touching the new custom, as he is enjoined.

Simple protection and safe-conduct, for five years, for Bernard de Montibus.

June 29. Odiham.

Grant, in fee simple, to Richard de Exonia, of land to the value of 20l. yearly in Connoukt, in Ireland (near his own land there), which Robert de Ufford, the justiciary of Ireland, lately committed to him in fee farm, to hold henceforth at the service of half a knight's fee, with remission to him of all arrears of the said fee farm to the present day, and of the yearly rent thereof due to the king until a year after Michaelmas next.

Acquittance to the abbot of Peterborough of the roll of pleas of the crown and assises of the county of Salop which were before Simon de Walton and his fellows, justices in eyre in the said county, on the morrow of Hilary, 40 Henry III. and which they deposited after their eyre for safe custody in the said abbey, and which has now been received from the abbot by the king.

Appointment of Richard de Bosco to the custody, during pleasure, of the castle of Corffe, so that he answer at the Exchequer like Elias de Rabayne, the late constable.

Signification to Th. bishop of Hereford of the royal assent to the election of Geoffrey de Menedep, canon of Wormele, to be prior of Chirebury.

Simple protection, until five years after Michaelmas, for Henry le Mareschal, citizen and merchant of Dublin.

Inspeximus and confirmation to Hugh de Kersey of letters patent, sealed with the seal of the commonalty (communitatis) of the citizens of Dublin, granting to him a moiety of the chief serjeanty of the shore of the city of Dublin, in these words :—

'Memorandum, that on Friday after the feast of St. Luke the Evangelist, 6 Edward I. when the said Hugh claimed the said moiety as having been long since granted to him for life by the assent of the mayor and jurats of the city, and because it was given in evidence on the same day in the Guildhall, Dublin, before the whole commonalty (communa) by the assertion of certain good men of the said city, who were present at the grant, that the same was made in the form aforesaid to the said Hugh, it was finally granted by the assent of the whole commonalty, that so far as in them lay to grant it, he shall hold the said moiety for life under the following form, to wit, that he shall present to the said mayor and jurats such a person as shall be good and fit, and one for whom he will be answerable, and that he shall have power to substitute another at will, on condition that he present another to them.'

Assignment to Eleanor, the king's mother, in part satisfaction of 2,000l. sterling assigned to her in Gascony by Henry III. with the consent of the king, by the name of dower, of the town and castle of St. Macaire, with the pedage and fishery (nassa) thereof, to hold for life, as she formerly held it, for 330l. sterling, and 1,670l. sterling a year, for life, out of the custom of Bordeaux in pounds sterling or of Tours to that value, by the hand of the constable of Bordeaux or of the keeper of the custom as suppletory of the said 2,000l., with licence to her, if the payment of 1,670l., to be made out of the custom aforesaid, should not be fully made, to take, day by day, all the issues of the said custom until the deficit be paid up, without impediment by the seneschal of Gascony or the constable of Bordeaux; and if, in process of time, she should suffer any hindrance in the receipt of the said 1,670l. from the custom aforesaid at the hands of the king of France, the said sum shall be raised to her behoof out of the king's lands in Gascony, the Ageuois and Saintonge ; the queen mother, in return for this grant and assignment to surrender to the king all the lands and tenements which she held in dower by the assignment of Henry III. in Gascony, in the bishopric of Saintes, and the Isle of Oleron, except the said town and castle of St. Macaire, with the pedage and fishery thereof aforesaid.

Memorandum, that for the dower of the queen in Gascony, to wit, 2,000l, there are assigned to her the town and pedage of St. Macaire for 330l. and the rest, to wit, 1,670l. in the custom of Bordeaux.

Item, there are assigned to her the town and pedage of Marmaund 1,450l. in part satisfaction of the extent of Richemund, which was extended at 1,805l. 14s. 10d.

Item, there was lastly assigned to her, in part satisfaction of 1,065l. 16s. 7d. which she used to receive in the Exchequer, the following :—

Letters for the abbot of Robertsbridge, going beyond seas, nominating Laurence de Cantuaria, his fellow monk, and Simon de Exede his attorneys until Christmas.

Acquittance to the said abbot for the payment to Eleanor, the king's consort, of 100 marks wherein he made fine for entering the king's fee; which sum the king gave to his consort, and she has acknowledged its receipt before the king.

Exemption, for life, at the instance of Eleanor, the king's mother, to Richard Morel, usher of her chamber, from being put upon assizes, juries, or recognisances.

Writ de intendendo to the tenants of the bishopric of Carlisle, in favour of Ralph de Irton, sometime prior of Giseburn, whom the Pope has preferred to be bishop.

Mandate to Richard de Holebrok and Thomas de Normanville to restore to him the temporalities.

Mandate to the bishop of Durham that he cause the said bishop to have due administration of the churches of the said bishopric sequestrated by him in his diocese.

The like to the bishop of Coventry and Lichfield.

Grant to Eleanor, the king's mother, touching her dower, in the same terms as on the schedule above, with the exception of the clause referring to the king of France.

[In the margin.] Afterwards this charter was altered under the same date and a new clause was added [to wit, that relating to the king of France].

Grant to her—in pursuance of a covenant made with her by Henry III. with the consent of the king, that as soon as the land of the Agenais should come to his hands or those of Edward I., it should be given to her by extent for life, in compensation for the value of the earldom of Richmond—of the pedage of the town of Marmande by sea and land, with the ferry (cum passagio curalli), and the fishery (nassis), and the king's meadow there, to hold for her life free of any charge as of the value of 1,450l. sterling, in compensation of the said earldom; and grant that if it fall short of that amount, the deficiency shall be made up to her in the king's lands in the Agenais.

Grant to her—in pursuance of a like covenant made with her by Henry III. that after her death, the executors of her will should have, out of the issues of the lands of the Agenais, 10,000 marks for the execution of her will—that, after her death, her executors shall hold the town and castle of St. Macaire with the pedage and fishery thereof for 330l., and also those 1,670l. which the king granted to her yearly out of the custom of Bordeaux, and also the pedage of the town of Marmaunt by sea and land, with the ferry and the fishery and the king's meadow there for 1,450l. until they have received from all these the said 10,000 marks.

MEMBRANE 9.

July 10. Selborne.

Grant to her that the king shall pay, out of the issues of the land of the Agenais, all alms, fees or charges incumbent on the above pedage of the town of Marmaund, passage, fishery and meadow.

Mandate to J. de Greilly, seneschal of Gascony, to deliver to her the town and castle of St. Macaire with the pedage and fishery of the said town and 1,670l. of the custom of Bordeaux now newly granted to her for life, she having surrendered to the king in return for the same all the lands which she held in dower in Gascony and the bishopric of Saintes and isle of Oleron, except the town and castle aforesaid of St. Macaire ; and to deliver also the pedage of the town of Marmande and other things, as above, she having surrendered to the king in return for the same all her right in the land of the Agenais and the earldom of Richmond; and he is to receive from her letters of receipt of the said custom, and to take seisin for the king of the surrendered lands and right above named.

The like to the seneschal of Gascony, the constable of Bordeaux, and the keeper of the custom there to deliver to her yearly 1,670l. out of the said custom, accordiug to the form of the above grant.

Appointment of John de Greilly, seneschal of Gascony, and Master Raymond de la Ferere as proctors of Edward I. to obtain the confirmation by the king of France of certain new conventions entered into between Edward I. and his said mother touching grants and assignments made to her in Gascony.

Grant to her that the king shall hold her harmless touching all alms, fees or charges incumbent on the above pedage of the town of Marmaunde; and if it shall happen to become so charged he will cause compensation to be made without delay in lands or rents in England or in the Agenais.

Notification to Philip, king of France, that the king desires his confirmation of the above assignments made to the said Eleanor in Gascony and the Agenais, and to obtain it has sent as his proctors John de Greyley, seneschal of Gascony, and Masters Adam de Norffolk, constable of Bordeaux, and Raymond de la Ferere.

Letters for Alan, bishop of Cloyne (Colonensis), staying in England, nominating William Keting and Thomas son of Richard his attorneys in Ireland for two years.

Mandate to John le Teynturer and Henry le Escot to abstain from impeding Hugh de Marchingeleye and Geoffrey de Gatesfeud, to whom the king has demised the murage of the town of Newcastle-on-Tyne for seven years from Whitsunday, in the collecting and levying of the said murage, and to surrender to them any of the same taken against their will after the commencement of the demise from merchants of within or without the town trading there, lest the king hear a repetition of their plaint.

Simple protection, for two years, for Walter de Portesm[ue], parson of the church of Codington.

Ratification to Peter Andrew, of Overton, of a demise made to him by Ralph de Sandwyco, king's steward, of the king's manor of Polhampton for 12 years from the morrow of Michaelmas, 8 Edward I., at a rent at the Exchequer of 15l. 10s.

The like to Robert Bukke [in the margin 'Bugge'], of Wymering, of the manor of Wymering.

July 14. Windsor.

Henry de Hameldon and William de Bytern, canons of St. Denys by Southampton, bringing news of the resignation and cession of Nicholas de Hampton, their prior, have letters of licence to elect.

Mandate to all justices, sheriffs and bailiffs to admit any attorneys whom Eleanor, the king's mother, has empowered William de Wyntreshull, her knight, and Robert de Geyte, her clerk, to nominate as her attorneys; for three years.

July 14.

Ratification of a demise made by Thomas de Sandwyz, seneschal in Pontif, of the king and Eleanor [his consort], countess of Pontif, by the counsel of Daun Renaud, monk of Foremuster, and their receiver in Pontif, of the vicomté of Crotoy to John Milet, Roland le Lumbard, and Perron Ancoste, their burgesses of Abbeville, to hold as other vicomtes held it in the time of John de Neele, lord of Falévy, and the time of their mother Joan, sometime queen of Castele, for three years from All Saints, 1281, for 880l. of Paris yearly, whereof they have paid in hand 800l. of Paris, to the said receiver on condition that the said farmers pay fees and alms due in the said vicomté: and grant, that of the said 800l. of Paris paid in hand, 400 be allowed to them as rebate out of the issues of the said vicomté of Crotoy: and grant, at the request of the said seneschal of Pontif, that, as they have released this assignment to pay the debt of the king and queen to Gerard de Chanles lord Destrees, they be fully paid the said 400l. out of the first issues of the forest of Cressy that come in at Midsummer.

The like of two assignments made by the said seneschal:—

(1.) To the mayor, échevins and commune of their town of Waben, in consideration of a loan of 500l. of Paris for acquitting the king's debts of Puntif, of a like sum to be taken by them during the next three years from the vicomté, the through-toll (au travers) of Waben, and the 42l. which the said town owes the king and queen for the market (les hales) of Waben.

(2.) To the mayor, échevins and commune of their town of Rue, in consideration of a like loan of 400l. of Paris, of a like sum to be taken by them during the next three years, to wit, a moiety thereof from the vicomté of Rue, and the other moiety from the sales of the king's wood of the Gart.

The like of an assignment made by the said seneschal to the above Gerard do Chanles of 660l., wherein the king was bound to him, out of the vicomté of Crotoy by next Midsummer.

July 14. Windsor.

Letters for the abbot of Tame, going beyond seas, nominating Michael de Thame, his fellow monk, and Simon de Gersindon his attorneys until All Saints.

The like for the abbot of Waverle nominating Richard le Marchant and Gilbert de Hedle.

Signification to N. archbishop of Ardmagh of the royal assent to the election of John Tar ran to be abbot of the house of the Apostles, Luueth.

Protection with clause volumus, until Christmas, for the abbot of Hales, going beyond seas.

Mandate to all bailiffs and others, to protect all the merchants of the count of Seyland coming through their parts with their merchandise, since the said count has agreed to make amends at the will of the king on a day fixed for certain trespasses done by his own merchants against the king's merchants, by reason of which the king lately ordered all the bailiffs of the kingdom to seize all the goods of the merchants of the said count found in the towns situated near the sea or which should come thither until further orders ; and they are to safely keep all goods already seized at sea in pursuance of the said mandate until further order.

Mandate to Stephen de Penecestre, keeper of the Cinque Ports, to cause proclamation to be made at each of those ports prohibiting any person from molesting by sea or land the said merchants; and to keep safely the goods already seized.

Mandate to John Simonetti, Bouroncinus and Richard Guidichun, and their fellows, merchants of Lucca, to advance by way of loan to Otto de Grandisono, one of the king's household and king's secretary, whom the king is sending to the court of Rome on special business, at the times and places the said Otto shall enjoin upon them to do so in the king's name.

Vacated because surrendered and cancelled and the money was paid.

Grant, in fee simple, to Matthew de Columbariis of the houses in Cattestrete, in the parish of St. Laurence, in the city of London, late of Aaron Crespyn, a Jew, who was hanged for a trespass against the coinage.

Simple protection, for three years in Ireland, for Master Robert Waleraund.

Mandate to Margery de Crioll to pay to Gregory de Rockesle, to whom the king has given the custody, during the minority of the heir, of the lands late of Nicholas de Crioll from the determination of the custody before granted to Stephen de Penecestre of the same, the farm of the manor of Hinton, which is of the inheritance of the said heir.

The like to Isabella de Eynesford touching the farm of the manor of Wrotham.

Mandate to Robert de Ufford, justiciary of Ireland, or the person supplying his place, to give the royal assent to the election of the Friar Minor, elected to be bishop of Clonmacnois in the room of Thomas, the late bishop, deceased, and to restore to him the temporalities after first receiving the usual letters that this grace shall not be to the king's prejudice ; and whereas brother Gilbert, monk of Innocencia by Adlon, came to the king and informed him that the dean and chapter had sent a messenger to obtain licence to elect who had died on the way, and afterwards proceeded to election without obtaining it, he is to take from them a reasonable fine for so doing.

The said Henry claimed the advowson to be his by reason of a charter of feoffment of Richard I. uncle of Henry III. to his ancestors, of the manor of Corirevel with its appurtenances which he still holds, but there being no mention of the advowson in the said eharter, he surrendered it and submitted himself to the king's grace.

Restitution to the abbot and convent of Tinterne of whatever the king by his charter made in the time of Henry III. gave to them in the town of Huwaldeffeld, and which for certain causes he resumed, and which, as appears by an extent made by Ralph de Sandwyco, king's steward, is worth 61s. 5d. yearly, on condition that they pay that rent.

Whereas Henry [II.] by charter granted to Ralph de Monte Caniso, kinsman of William de Monte Caniso, whose heir he is, that his lands and men should be quit of shires and hundreds and suits and hidages, and all plaints that belong to shires and hundreds, except murder and treasure; and the said William and his ancestors, by reason of such grant, had the view of frank-pledge and the sheriff's turn in all their lands and fees until the king deraigned the said view and turn of their men and tenants in the county of Kent, which are estimated at 8s. 3½d. yearly, before the justices last in eyre in that county, against the said William, by reason of the abuse of the said liberties; the king now restores the same to him and grants that, although the said William and his ancestors have far from fully used the said liberties in that county, he may fully use them and have the said view and turn at a yearly rent of 8s. 3½d.

Licence for the Friars Preachers of the city of York to enclose a piece of land adjoining their site, 2½ perches broad by the perch of 20 feet, and 15 perches long, part of a void place called Kingestoft within the said city, and to stop a well within the said place, on condition that they make a new well without the said land in a more convenient place than the present one.

Exemption to Hugh son of Hugh de Weston, for life, from serving on assises, juries or recognitions, or from being made, against his will, a sheriff, coroner, forester, verderer, or other bailiff of the crown.
