Commission to Walter de Redinges, clerk, and John de Burwell, on complaint by the provost of Emerich (Prepositus Embricen'), nephew of the count of Gueldres, Theodicus, advocate of Ruremund, and Gerard de Kerrik, to enquire by oath of the men of Newcastle-under-Lyme, co. Stafford, and parts adjacent, touching the persons of the said town and the parts adjacent who took away their goods as they passed through the said town as they were coming to the king on an embassage from the said count, and to compel the persons found guilty to pay a sufficient compensation to the said envoys, and if they are unable to do so, to compel the commonalty of the town to make up the deficiency ; and the sheriff of Stafford is to take those found guilty and keep them in safe custody in the castle gaol of Newcastle-under-Lyme, until the king by writ of privy seal shall make further demand from them. Commission of oyer and terminer to the same, on complaint by the same Walter that Peter de Eyvill, John de Cave and John de Eyvill carried away crops and goods of the said hospital at North Cave, co. York, which were set aside for the maintenance of the infirm poor of the said hospital, and prevented the men and servants of the said master from reaping and binding the corn there, whereby a great part of it was lost.

Commission to William de Bereford and Elias de Bekingham, on complaint by Ralph le Cuper and Celest[ria] his wife, to examine at St. Martin's le Grand, London, in presence of the keepers and sheriffs and the parties interested, the record and process of a cause which was in the hustings before the latter between the said Ralph and Celestria his wife, plaintiffs, and Roger son of Henry le Cofrer and Joan, late the wife of Henry le Cofrer, tenants of a messuage in London, and to correct the error therein, if any.

Commission de walliis et fossatis to Hugh de Cressingham and John de Lythegraynes for the river Use from the town of Cawode to Faxflet on both sides of the water, in the county of York.

Commission of oyer and terminer to J. de Lithegreynes and J. de Insula, on complaint by the canons of the church of St. John, Beverley, that whereas the provostship (prepositura) of Beverley was founded long ago by the kings of England out of certain manors, for the maintenance of seven canons perpetually dwelling in the church of St. John there, and the said canons upon the death of a provost have had the custody thereof during times of voidance and received the issues entire, neither the archbishop of York nor any other person hitherto interfering, John, archbishop of York, upon the death of Peter de Cestria, late provost, ejected the men deputed by the said canons to the custody of the said provostship, took the provostry with the said manors into his hands, and appropriated to himself the issues thereof.

Commission to Gilbert de Thorneton and Ralph Paynel to free from obstructions, at the cost of the adjoining tenants, the course of the river Ancolne from Bishop's Bridge to the river Humbre, as it appears, by an inquisition made by the sheriff of Lincoln, that the meadows and pastures adjoining would thereby be drained, and vessels and boats laden with corn and other goods could then pass as they were wont to do from the Humbre to the parts of Lyndeseye by the said river.

Commission to William de Ormesby and Roger de Burton to deliver York gaol of all prisoners, as it appears that when the king, by reason of the disturbance by the Welsh, superseded the holding of further pleas by the justices in eyre in the county of York until further order, many persons indicted on that eyre were by judgment of the justices put in exigent, and upon the rumour thereof surrendered to York gaol, where a great multitude died of hunger and the residue in custody there remain in danger of death.

Commission de walliis et fossatis to J. de Metingham and William de Carleton by the bank of the Thames between the town of Lambeheth, co. Surrey, and the town of Greenwich, co. Kent.

Commission to W. de Pageham and Luke de Vienna to deliver Gildeford gaol of all persons except those indicted of trespasses against the peace before the late coming of the justices in eyre in the county of Surrey, and except those who until the said coming were handed over in bail, and except those indicted before Peter Mallore and Osbert de Spaldington, justices sent to hear and determine the trespasses committed in the warrens and chaces of John de Warenna, earl of Surrey, in the counties of Surrey and Sussex.

Inge, on complaint by Robert de Tateshale, touching the persons who, while he was on the king's service in Wales and under his protection, entered his free warren at Malteby by Strubby, co. Commission to John de Metingham and William de Bereford to examine at St. Martin's le Grand, London, in the presence of the keeper and sheriffs and the parties interested, the records and processes of a plea by John le Iremonger of London against Joan, late the wife of John de Hakeburne, touching a messuage, stall and soler in London, and to correct the error, if any, therein. The plea was first held in the king's court before the sheriffs of the city, and the king, on complaint by the said Joan, heretofore commanded the record and process thereof to be recited in a full hustings at London before the keeper of the city, but the said Joan further complains that, instead of correcting the error that was therein, the keeper confirmed it.

Commission of oyer and terminer to Roger de Burghulle, with such others as he shall associate with himself, by jury of the English and Welsh of the vicinage of Buelt, who are of no affinity to John Giffard or to William de Methyr, vicar of the church of Lanavan, as to whether the latter, who during the last Welsh war was taken by the men of the said John as he was passing by the castle of Buelt with his beasts, was going at that time to land in the king's peace as the said William avers, or not, as the said John avers; and the bailiffs of Buelt, Brechon, Elval, Gwerthrevvaun and Rayader are to send a jury. The like to Robert de Wodeton and Walter de Gloucestre, on complaint by Henry de Lacy, earl of Lincoln, that while he was on the king's service in Wales and under his protection, Henry son of Philip, Richard Jolif and John de Monaster[io], his men and bailiffs of the hundred of Baddebury, co. Dorset, together with Adam de Boulton, bailiff of the king's hundred of Cnolton, were assaulted at Little Kirchull, co. Dorset, by Master William, parson of the church of Little Kirchul, John Russell, Roger Horn, William le Chyverel, Richard le Messer and Emma his wife, Roger Galewey, John Swift, Henry de Wakerlee and Margery his daughter, John Snou and William le Mouner, when, upon a hue and cry being raised within his bailiwick, they attempted to attach the said persons as breakers of the peace.

The like to John de Havering, Bogo de Knovill and William de Mortuo Mari, on complaint by Joan, late the wife of Owen de la Pole, that William son of Griffin de la Pole, John and David his brothers, Madoc ab Mayler and Owen le Say deforce her of her reasonable dower in the lands of her late husband in Mayrdekerist in Mancho, Creynon, Bynweythan, Lestynwonnan, Thlangadeuen, Blanto, Cortaloc, Pennarth, Ruthyrgarth, Estredaluedan and Trevelyk in Wales; also that Margery late the wife of Geoffrey Clement, Griffin ab David of Genefglyn, Madoc ab David of Genefglyn, Gervocus ab Mayrller, and David Vaghan of Genefglyn ejected her from her common of pasture between Eynon and Lenevant, appertaining to her free tenement in Maghkanthleyt, and deforced her therefrom; also that certain persons took her beasts in her lands of Creynon and Keneyllok and drove them to some place unknown; and the sheriff of Salop, the king's bailiffs of Monte Gomeri, the bailiffs of Edmund de Mortuo Mari in Kery and Kedewynk, the bailiffs of Richard son of Alan, earl of Arundell, in Clonne, and the bailiffs of the bishop of Hereford in the town of Bishop's Castle, are commanded to provide a jury.

The like to John de Insula and John de Kirkeby, on complaint by John de Lyth[greynes] that John de Coygners, Robert son of William de Eggesclyve, John le Queynte and William Morgan, while he was with the king in his parliament at Westminster, assaulted Thomas de Piscaria, his servant, at Great Wyrkeshale, co. York, so that his life was despaired of, and killed a horse of the said John worth 10l.

The like to Roger de Brabazun and William de Bereford, on complaint by Ralph de Bello Fago that John de Seyton and Richard his brother, Adam Duredent, Reginald de Seyton, clerk, William son of Ranulph, and William de Oxenden pulled down his houses at Seyton, co. Rutland, and cut down and carried away his trees; and that afterwards, when the said Ralph appealed them of robbery and breaking the peace, they procured his being indicted of the death of Stephen Stute, so that he might be taken and kept in gaol and be prevented from his prosecution.

The like to Roger Brabazon and William de Castello, on petition of the appellee, touching an appeal of robbery brought in the Bench by Adam de Whethesbergh against Elias de Oddeleston : and the sheriff of Leicester is commanded to provide a jury.

Commission to J. de Lythegr[eynes] and J. de Ins[ula] touching the persons who entered the park of John de Bella Aqua of Thorp de Arches, co. York, hunted therein and carried away deer.

The like to John de Lithegr[eynes] and Roger de Burton, on complaint by John Fayrfax that, while he was in Gascony on the king's service and under his protection, Adam de Monte Alto, Gilbert le Baillif, Richard le Serjaunt and John Baret took his beasts at Walton by Thorp Arches, co. York, and drove them out of the county to Sulegrave, co. Buckingham.

The like to Roger Brabazon and Peter de Campania, on complaint by the prior of Belvoir that, while he was under the king's protection, Isabella de Ros, Master Nicholas de Ros, Robert de Denton, Richard le Provost of Redmylde, Peter le Hunte and Robert le Messer of Belvoir, co. Leicester, assaulted his men as they were carrying his corn at Redemylde and Belvoir, co. Leicester, and consumed the corn, and took some of his beasts on the high road there and drove them out of the county into the county of Lincoln, and prevented him by distraints and vexations from carrying his corn.

Aug. 23. Westminster.

The like to Roger Brabazun and Robert de Pipe (in pursuance of the king's grant to Edmund his brother that upon his request in the Chancery the king would appoint him justices to hear and determine trespasses in his chaces and parks, the redemptions, fines and amercements to go to the said Edmund as they would to the king if the said chaces and parks should happen to be in his hands), touching trespasses in the chaces and parks of the said Edmund in the counties of Stafford, Derby and Leicester.

The like to William de Mortuo Mari and Richard de Solar[iis], on complaint by Walter de Bodeham, touching the persons who assaulted him at Little Worninton, co. Gloucester, so that his life was despaired of, killed his horse, worth 20l., and carried away his goods.

The like to Henry de Enefeld and John de Bosco touching the persons who, together with William de Lichepole, entered the free chace of William de Brewosa called the forest of St. Leonard's and his parks of la Knappe and Beubusshun, and the free warren of his barony of Brembre, co. Sussex, while he was in Wales on the king's service and under his protection, cut down trees in his said chaces and parks, took deer, hares, rabbits, pheasants, herons and young herons (herruncellos), and destroyed their eyries and fished in his fisheries there and carried away fish.

The like to John de Havering, justice of North Wales, and William Sycun, constable of the castle of Aberconewey, on complaint by the men of the commonalty of North Wales, touching trespasses, injuries, extortions, oppressions and grievous losses inflicted upon them since that land came into the king's hands, by the sheriffs, bailiffs and other ministers of the king in those parts.

The like to J. Buteturte, keeper of the maritime parts in the county of Norfolk, and W. Gerberge, on complaint by Frederic son of Sibrandus de Durdragh, merchant of the count of Hoyland, that his ship, which he had freighted at Durdragh with his own goods to bring to Jernemuta, being driven by tempest to the sea-coast near Cove and Eston, co. Norfolk, and being wrecked and broken to pieces there, and the said goods cast upon the shore, some men of those parts took them, although sailors and others then in the ship having escaped alive, such goods could not by the law of the realm be held to be wreckage, carried them away and still keep them.

The like to William de Mortuo Mari and Richard de Solariis, on complaint by Margery, late the wife of Geoffrey Clement, that when, during the last war in Wales, she was in Lampader castle, John son of Reginald and his men of Talgrath and the parts adjacent carried away her corn, beasts and goods at Michelechurch and elsewhere in the counties of Herford and Kermerdyn.

The like to John Neyrnuyt, William de Sanderton and Nicholas de Turvill, on complaint by Richard son of John that Roger le Chapeleyn of Bleccheleye, Robert and William his brothers, John le Keu, John le Lung, Thomas le Personesman and Walter Heriet of Bleccheleye broke his park of Whaddon, co. Buckingham, and entered his park and free chace there, hunted therein and carried away deer. By K., on the information of A. bishop of Durham.
