Committment for life to John de Sancta Maria, chaplain of the queen, of the wardenship of the hospital of St. Katherine without the Tower of London. with the land of Reynham co. Kent, and the land of Red, co. Hertford, and all other things belonging to it, to hold in the same manner as Walter the late warden held the same.

Notification that William Baudri and John le Clerk delivered into the wardrobe to Master Henry de Gaunt, keeper thereof, on Thursday after the feast of SS. Simon and Jude at Westminster in the 49th year 7l. 7s. of the issues of the manors of Isabel de Crohun of Hammes and Valeton.

To the king of France. Whereas the king lately sent certain persons to his presence and to G. bishop of Sabina, the papal legate, and others the king's friends in those parts to treat ot the reformation and peace of the realm, and in going enormous losses were inflicted upon them, whereat the said king of France was pained, as the king is informed, yet in spite of his pain the said persons do not feel so secure that others of the realm will commit themselves to like peril without his safe conduct; the king earnestly requires him to grant safe conduct by the bearer for the messengers as well of himself as of the prelates and barons whom he is shortly sending for the said business; and to send some of his faithful men to Wytsaund a week after Martinmas to conduct these more safely.

Bond to Waubert Bauden, Reyner Pyket, James de Fresseyn, and Simon Truberd, merchants of Douai, in 120l. 7s. 10d. for cloths taken from them to the king's use at London by Hugh de Turri and Robert de Linton, buyers of the wardrobe, against Christmas, as testified by Adam de Novo Mercato, the steward, to be paid at the Exchequer a fortnight after Hilary next, according to the tenour of the writ of Liberate which they have.

Commitment during pleasure to Humphrey de Bohun the younger of the king's houses of Havering to dwell in and put his goods in.

Notification that Thomas de Muleton took to the king's use from Thomas de Broyle, merchant of Rochelle, 22 tuns of bastard and 2 tuns of sweet wine to munition the king's ships at Sandwich against the invasion of the aliens.

Whereas the king out of the fine which J. bishop of Winchester made with the king for the corn and stock of the said bishopric after the king restored to him the temporalities of the said bishopric, assigned to the king's nephew Simon de Monte Forti, son of Simon de Monte Forti, earl of Leicester, 800l. in part satisfaction of his expenses in the seige of the castle of Pevenese, in part payment whereof the said Simon has already received 500 marks which the bishop lately paid at the Exchequer; the king commands the bishop to pay the remaining 700 marks to the said Simon at the terms at which he is bound to the king; and if anything further of his fine remains to be paid, he is to pay it to the king. The said Simon had another letter directed Omnibus &c. to the same effect.

Acknowledgment of the payment, in the wardrobe, by John son of John to Master Henry de Gaunt, keeper of the wardrobe, on Saturday, the feast of St. Luke last, at Westminster, of 84l. in part payment of 200l. whereby the said John made fine for the wardship of the lands and heirs of Thomas de Hemmegrave; and of 16 marks which the said John paid to William de Leukenor, the butler, for the payment of wines taken to the king's use by the said William, in part payment of his said fine.

Whereas the king granted his houses of Havering to Humphrey de Bohun the younger to dwell in with his wife and household, and Richard de Montfichet, steward of the forest of Essex, who says that the keeping of the said houses and the park of Havering belongs to him of fee, fears he would be in danger if anything happened to the said houses through fire or other mishap, the king acquits the said Richard of any liability while the said houses are in the hands of the said Humphrey, and further wills that the serjeants of the said Richard shall have a place (receptaculum) there to dwell in for the keeping of the said forest and park.

Mandate to the tenants of the abbey of Persore to be intendent to Henry de Bideford, monk of Persore, whose election as abbot has been confirmed by W. bishop of Worcester, and to whom the king has restored the temporalities.

Protection until Easter for Nicholas le Ewer.

Grant for life to Thomas de Glayvill, serjeant of the wardrobe, of 2d. a day which William Spinech used to receive by the hands of the sheriff of Hereford out of the king's appointed alms.

Whereas after the death of Ralph Burnel, carpenter, who held the mastership of the carpentry in the castle of Wyndesore, with 3d. a day for his stipend, the king, in consideration of his long service, granted that office to Thomas Burnel his son for life, on condition that he should fill that office, and receive the said 3d. a day, but the said Thomas is not a carpenter, whereby he cannot fill the office; the king nevertheless, in regard for the long service of the said Ralph, grants to him of special grace, the said 3d, a day for life.

The like to Henry de la More, indicted of the death of Thomas de Pishopinden; as it appears by inquisition made by Nicholas de Hautlou, and Fulk Payforer, sheriff of Kent, that he is not guilty thereof.

Safe conduct for Master Edward de la Cnolle, dean of Wells, king's clerk, going beyond seas as an envoy to Louis king of France, G. bishop of Sabina the papal legate, and Eleanor the king's consort; and his household. [Fœdera.]

Acknowledgment of the payment by Randolf de Sunderefr', farmer of the church of Chindinghestone, into the wardrobe to Master Henry de Gaunt, keeper of the wardrobe, on Monday the morrow of St. Edmund the Confessor at Wyndesor, 49 Henry III of 30l. of the issues of the grange of Chidinghestone, of which sum the king will cause satisfaction to be made to those to whom it is answerable of right.

Whereas certain persons by reason of the late disturbance of the realm devastated the fruits of the churches and other ecclesiastical goods of alien and other clerks adversaries of the king residing without the realm, and the king by the counsel of the prelates and barons appointed Stephen Saudan to sell part of the crops of the church of Racolore and its chapels of Hirne and Berner Manketon and Bercelton, which remained after the devastation and destruction of the said crops and which by the oath of good men was valued at 50l. 12d. and the said Stephen has sold such part for that sum and paid the money into the wardrobe, whereof the king will make satisfaction to those to whom it is due of right; the king accepts the said sale and will keep the said Stephen harmless.

Whereas the serjeants of John son of John would have arrested certain goods of certain merchants from beyond seas, in the town of Southampton, but the bailiffs of that town would not permit the said arrest, the king has appointed Stephen Fromund, mayor of the city of Winchester, William de Cockton, and John de Churchehill to take into the king's hand the said goods and keep them in a safe place until further order; saving the goods of merchants of the king of France, his brothers, the countess of Flanders, and others the king's friends; and commands the said bailiffs to admit them to do this freely and without hindrance. Power to W. bishop of Worcester, H. bishop of London, and Hugh le Despenser, justiciary of England, and Peter de Monte Forti to enquire touching the plaint of Eleanor the king's sister, countess of Leicester, concerning the lands which the earl marshal sometime her husband had in Ireland and Wales, whereof she has had no dower, and of her loss through the king's long detention of her said dower; and to make such assignment to her for her said dower and losses that before God and men the king may be held to be absolved.

Because for very urgent business the king is directing his steps with all speed to Oxford, whereby he cannot come personally to Northampton at this instant quinzaine of Martinmas; he commands the earls, barons, knights, and others about to meet there by his command on the said day to come to him at Oxford with all speed, as Hugh le Despenser, justiciary of England, whom he is sending to the parts of Northampton for this purpose, will more fully declare.

Protection for seven years for the brethren of the hospital of St. Mary Magdalene for lepers, Dunestaple, their men, lands, goods, rents and possessions.

Pardon at the instance of John de Bernevall who is in the king's keeping, to Richard son of Robert de Stanrock for the death of Geoffrey Poynnaunt, and of any consequent outlawry.

Nov. 24. Dunstable.

Whereas the king heretofore granted to Peter de Monte Forti 50l. a year at the Exchequer until he should provide for him or his heirs to that amount yearly in lands, in exchange for a quit claim which the said Peter made to the king of all right in the woods belonging to his manor of Rydelyngton, which he holds of the fee of the earl of Warwick, and which woods the king holds within the forest of Roteland; and whereas the king has now granted to the said Peter the manor of Garthorp, late of William de Gaugy, deceased, who held it in chief of the king's gift as an escheat of the land of the Normans, to hold to the said Peter in part of his assignment of the said 50l. yearly of land, so that 30l. a year be deducted from the said 50l. a year for the value thereof; and Cecily late the wife of the said William is dowered of a third part of the said manor, whereby a third part of the value of the said manor is deducted for her life; the king grants to him, in compensation of such third part, 10l. a year at the Exchequer for her life, so that he shall receive at the Exchequer 30l. a year for her life and after her death 20l. a year.

Pardon, at the instance of Simon de Eyton, prior of Dunstaple, to Richard son of William Cadde for the death of Alan de Longecote, as it appears by inquisition made by Walter de Creppinges, steward of the household, and Simon de Pateshull, sheriff of Buckingham, that he killed him in self defence.

Safe conduct, until Sunday the morrow of St. Nicholas and for the whole of that day, for Roger de Mortuo Mari, James de Aldithele, Roger de Clifford, Warin de Bassingburn, William de la Zuche and Payn de Cadurcis, with their households and goods, coming to the king whenever he may be in England. And the king is sending R. bishop of Coventry and Lichfield, Peter de Monte Forti and William de Mandeville to conduct them.

Whereas the king by right of the crown presented Robert Fulton, king's clerk, to the church of Hintlesham, concerning the advowson whereof question was raised in the king's court, between the king and William Pipard, tenant in chief, who died before the decision of the said contention, after whose death the wardship of his lands and heirs is in the king's hands, whereby the right of presentation to the said church, if the said William had any, belongs to the king; the king commands the bishop of Norwich to admit his said clerk, at the king's presentation, saving in all things the right of the king and of the said heirs when they come of age, if any, in the said advowson. The king presented the last parson to the said church in the eighteenth year, or in the thirtieth year.

Mandate to the barons of Hastinges, and especially of Wynchelese and La Rye to keep watch for the capture of certain persons who as the king is informed, are endeavouring by ships to munition the castle of Pevenese with men and victuals to the king's damage, as J. de Sandwico shall instruct them. And the king will pay them for their watches in this matter with any arrears which may be due.

Grant to Pentecost de Farenham, king's serjeant, and his heirs of 2 bovates of land in Kelleseye late of Thomas Peche and Osbert his brother, held in chief, as it appears by inquisition made by William de Wenling, king's clerk, escheator on this side Trent, that they are the king's escheat because the said Thomas and Osbert died without heir.

Safe conduct until Hilary for Mary wife of Robert de Ferrariis, earl of Derby, coming to England and there staying, with Beatrice wife of Matthew Besill, three damsels (domicellis) and four English esquires (scutiferis).

Commitment during pleasure to Roger de Missinden, king's clerk, of the manor of Brehull, so that he answer for the issues at the Exchequer in the form to be provided by the council of the king and the barons of the Exchequer at the king's next coming to Westminster; with mandate to the tenants to be intendant to him.

Mandate to John son of Nigel, that taking with him Richard son and heir of J. le Pouer and other good men he view the state of the said manor and see in what manner the said Roger receives it with the crops and other things belonging thereto.

Promise to Brian de Gouiz, to whom the king lately committed the castle of Syreburn during pleasure, as it is advisable by reason of the late disturbance of the realm for him to munition it with victuals, that the king will allow him for such munition, by view and testimony of lawful men, in the debts which he owes at the Exchequer; on condition that such victuals remain to the king, unless they be expended in the defence of the castle by occasion of war; in which case the king will allow him such part as has been expended, so that he answer for his outlays at the Exchequer.

Whereas certain persons, by occasion of the late disturbance of the realm, destroyed wools and other merchandise of merchants from beyond seas, whereby the king appointed Henry de Monte Forti, his nephew, warden of the Cinque Ports, to keep such merchandise safe, and it is necessary that such merchandise should be removed to safer places by view and counsel of the said merchants; the king wills that the said Henry remove them accordingly.

Commitment during pleasure to Hugh Peverel of Saunford of the stannary in the county of Devon, so that he answer for the issues at the Exchequer, as Ralph de Oddiscumb, deceased, used to answer.

Mandate to G. archbishop of York, H. bishop of London, and R. bishop of Lincoln, in pursuance of the provision lately made at London by the counsel and assent of the prelates and nobles touching the plundering of ecclesiastical persons, to call before them and hear the plaints of such as should be called and do justice in respect of the said injuries and damages, and the king will cause what they ordain to be observed.

Safe conduct for Roger de Mortuo Mari, Roger de Clifford, and Roger de Leyburn, going to Kenylewrth with their households to speak with Edward the king's son. And to confirm and to complete the covenants sealed with the seals of W. bishop of Worcester, and R. bishop of Coventry and Lichfield, as the said Edward will more fully enjoin. And if the said Edward shall order them to complete the said covenants and they will not do so, this safe conduct shall from that time be held for naught; but if the said Edward refuse to order them to do it, this safe conduct shall be observed that they may be able to return home without hindrance.

To the bailiffs and good men of Bristol. Whereas the king's firstborn son committed to Simon de Monte Forti, earl of Leicester, the castle and town of Bristol to be kept in the form provided by them, the king commands them to be intendant to his said son (sic) as keeper of the said castle and town in the form aforesaid. Commitment during pleasure to Edward the king's son of the castle of Lotegreshale with the manor, barton and other appurtenances, so that he answer for the issues at the king's order.

Mandate to Robert de Insula, to deliver these with the victuals and other stock therein to him by chirograph to be made between him and the attorney of the said Edward.

Commitment during pleasure, by the counsel of the barons, to John de Mucegros of the castle of Salisbury, so that he and the other knights with their households who were lately in the munition of the castle of Bristol may be able to stay in the said castle at the king's will.

Mandate to Ralph Russell, constable of the said castle, to deliver it to him.

Mandate to Roger de Mortuo Mari to deliver without delay John le Despenser, lately taken in the assault (in insultu) had at Northampton, and in his keeping by commitment of the king it being so provided by the counsel of the barons; and to cause him to have safe conduct in coming through his parts to the king, as Nicholas de Dydenham, the bearer, will explain.

In like manner it is commanded to Roger de Clifford to deliver William de Eyvill.

Licence after inquisition ad quod damnum made by Richard Muntfichet, steward of the forest of Essex, for William de Clovill to enclose his wood called Wydeford within the metes of the said forest with a little dyke and low hedge so that the king's deer may go in and out and to assart it and bring it into cultivation.

Commitment during pleasure, by the counsel of the barons, to Peter de Monte Forti of the castle of Hereford and the hundred of Irchenfeud, so that he have the issues thereof for the maintenance of the keeping of the said castle and the munition of the same, and the preservation of the marches in those parts.

Mandate to Richard de Bachinden, sheriff of Hereford, to deliver them to him.

Safe conduct until Lent for Warin de Bassingburn, Robert Walerand, Payn de Cadurcis, Nicholas de Haversham, Robert de Tipetot, Geoffrey Gacelin, and Nicholas de Cugenhou, and the other knights, esquires (armigeros), and serjeants, lately in the munition of the castle of Bristol, with their households, horses, harness and other things, coming to the king's castle of Salisbury and staying there until the king make other ordinance touching their state.

Dec. 24. Woodstock.

Whereas Edward the king's son, with the assent of the king; has granted to Simon de Monte Forti, earl of Leicester, and his heirs, the county, castle and honour of Chester in exchange for certain lands which the earl has assigned him to the same value, as appears in the form of covenant made between them; the king commands all the tenants to be intendant to the said earl and his heirs, as they used to be to Randolf, sometime earl of Chester, saving their fealty to the king and his heirs as it was accustomed to be done in the time of the said earl. By K. the bishop of London, the justiciary and others of the C.

The like mandate to the tenants of the castellany of the Peak to be intendant to the said earl in all that pertains to the said castle.

Mandate to Robert de Ferrariis, earl of Derby, to deliver the castle to him.

Safe conduct until the quinzaine of Hilary for John de Baliolo, Peter de Brus, Robert de Nevill, Eustace de Baloyl, Stephen de Menil, Gilbert Haunsard, Ralph son of Randolf, Adam de Gesemuth and their fellows of the northern parts, in coming to the king in London, with their households and goods, staying with him and returning to their own parts. And for their greater security the king, is sending John de Burgo the elder to conduct them.

The like for Peter de Brus by himself.

Mandate by the counsel of the barons of the council to John de Vescy, Henry de Hastinges, John de Eyvill, Adam de Novo Mercato, Robert de Ros, Nicholas de Segrave and their fellows in the northern parts not to molest the above persons, but to let them and their men pass under the conduct of the said John.

Protection for Peter le Chanu, parson, of the church of Fakenham Magna, who proposes to reside at his benefices, as it is provided by the counsel of the barons that clerks willing to reside at their ecclesiastical benefices shall do so in safety.

Whereas Edward the king's son, for the security of peace in the realm, became a hostage, and now, thanks be to God, the said disturbance is assuaged, and for the liberation of the said Edward and the full completion of peace, the king has many times commanded John de Bailol, Peter de Brus, Robert de Neville, Eustace de Bailol, Stephen de Menil, Gilbert Haunsaid, Ralph son of Randolf, Adam de Gesemuth, Robert de Stotevill of Acton and their fellows of the northern parts, to come to him and discuss these matters with him, and they have put off doing this, whereat the king is moved; the king commands them once more to come to him for this purpose to London, and for their greater security sends John de Burgo the elder to conduct them, and he has commanded John de Vescy, Henry de Hastinges, John de Eyvill, Adam de Novo Mercato, and other his faithful men in those parts to abstain from molesting them or their men if they come.

Whereas the king's kinswoman M. countess of Flanders has taken under her protection the king's merchants and their merchandise throughout her land and power, the king, by the counsel of the barons, has done the like by her merchants in his power; willing that their merchandise be laid up in churches or religious houses or other safe places, so that they may take them to their own parts and trade as they have been accustomed to do.
