1258. Nov. 4. Westminster.

Commission to William le Bretun, to make inquisition touching a complaint by H. bishop of Ely, that immense trespasses and damages have been done in his bishopric by the king's guardians of the same and their ministers while the bishopric was in the king's hands; and the sheriffs of Cambridge, Huntingdon, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Hertford are commanded to provide jurors.

The like to the same touching losses done by the king's guardians of the abbey of St. Edmunds and its liberty and manors.

Supplication dated at Dublin, Eve of SS. Peter and Paul, 42 Henry III. to Edward, the king's son, by John le Botiller, Peter le Botiller, William la Zuche, Richard de Karreu, Thomas Phanyn, William Phanyn, Richard de Mariscis, William de Mariscis, Jordan de Mariscis, Nicholas de Dunhevet, Richard de Wigornia, Robert de Sancto Michaile, Henry Haket and William Haket for the release from prison of William and Hugh, sons of William de Mariscis, their kinsmen; and they will mainpern for them, under a penalty of 300 marks that no damage or grievance shall arise either to the king or the said Edward or his by them after their deliverance by occasion of the death of their father or their own incarceration.

Mandate to Edward, the king's son, to cause them to be delivered from gaol by the said mainprise. By C.

And be it known that the said letter patent has been put in the chest of rolls at the head of the said chest amongst the rolls of Brittany.

Counsel (consulendo mandamus) to the said Edward to release them accordingly from his prison of Chester.

1259. Jan. 6. Westminster.

Appointment of Hugh le Despenser, Thomas Gresley and Walter de Ludham, because extents of the lands late of Edmund de Lacy made by Peter de Percy are insufficient for many causes, to make better extents, with mandate to the sheriffs of York and Lincoln to provide jurors.

Jan. 10. Westminster.

Whereas there was a contention between Stephen Lungespe, to whom Edward the king's son, with the king's assent, granted the wardship of the lands late of Walter son of Robert, and Ida wife of the said Walter, touching her dower; the king has appointed John de Wyvyle to extend the lands of the said Walter and cause assignment to be made to Ida of her reasonable dower of the parks and knights' fees which the said Walter had; and if she has more than she ought to have, to cause her to restore that to the said Stephen. And the sheriffs of Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk are commanded to provide jurors.

Jan. 27. Canterbury.

Whereas there has been a contention between B. archbishop of Canterbury, and R. earl of Gloucester, over the metes and divisions of the earl's lowey of Tonbrig, and they have put themselves before the king in a perambulation to be made by twelve men of either party; Roger de Norwode and William de Camera have been appointed to make such perambulation, and let the king know the result by four men of those who make the said perambulation.

Henry de Bath and W. de Wilton, by consent of both parties, have been appointed to hear and determine contentions between the archbishop and the earl touching the fairs of Horsmonden and Couden; and the sheriff of Kent is to provide jurors.
