Grant to Thomas de Brampton, king's serjeant, of the 6 marks of rent in Buketon which were of John le Estraunge and are the king's escheat by the death of the said John; to hold to him and his heirs or assigns for ever.

Mandate to Master William de Clifford, escheator on this side Trent, to give him seisin thereof.

Simple protection for one year for John Dunheved.

Injunction to the keepers, mayor, sheriffs and bailiffs of the city of London, to permit William de Cornhull and Stephen his son, citizens of London, to be quit of any contribution to the fine of 25,000 marks which the citizens made with the king to have his good will; the king having when at Canterbury, pardoned them for all trespasses which they were said to have done with their fellow citizens as adversaries of his in the time of the disturbance in the realm, remitted to them all his indignation and rancour of mind conceived against them on that account and received them into his full grace.

May 5. Northampton.

Pardon to Ralph le Forrester of Kinley for the death of Adam de Norton, as it appears by inquisition made by William de Englefeld that he killed him in self defence.

Whereas the king has granted to Peter, count of Savoy, lord of Guichard de Charron, in exchange for the earldom and honour of Richemund, certain lands and manors with which he and his friends ought to be content, and has restored the said earldom and honour to John, duke of Brittany, whereby the king is sending Ralph de Mortein, knight, of the said duke, to the said Guichard to receive the same from him in the name of his said lord ; he commands Guichard to deliver the same to the said knight as he will avoid the king's indignation, knowing that if he fail he will be in peril of disherison of his land of the Agenais (Ajanens') ; and the king will keep him harmless towards his lord the count of Savoy.

Writ de intendendo to the tenants of the said castle (sic), county and honour.

Simple protection until Easter for Michael de Munkor.

Licence for life, at the instance of Roger de Leyburn, for Anselm Basset to hunt with his own dogs, the hare, the fox, the badger and the cat throughout the king's forests in the counties of Somerset, Dorset, Wilts and Southampton, except the New Forest.

Safe conduct until Midsummer for William de Harecurt, coming to court, provided that he do no damage in the meantime to any of the king's lieges.

Notification to Humphrey de Bouun, earl of Hereford, keeper of the castles and lands late of Richard de Clare, sometime earl of Gloucester, beyond the Wye, that the king has lent to his niece the wife of Gilbert de Clare, earl of Gloucester and Hertford, the said Richard's castle of Kerdif to dwell in during pleasure; and mandate to deliver it to her.

Whereas the abbot of Abbindon is doing the king his full service of thirty knights in the castle of Wyndesor where the queen is now staying, and by a general summons of the king's whole service of England, another service is being exacted from him to go with the king on the present expedition; the king being unwilling he should be grieved by a double service, remits for this turn the said service exacted from him by the general summons.

May 8. Northampton.

Whereas the king lately commanded the abbot of St. Edmunds, like the rest of the tenants in chief, to have his service due to the king before him at Northampton, three weeks after Easter next, to grieve and subdue with him his enemies, and John de Vallibus, appointed to the keeping and defence of the parts of Norfolk and Suffolk, has retained with him that service for the said defence, the king accepts this and acquits the abbot so far as regards the said mandate.

The abbot of St. Benet, Hulme, has the like letters touching his service which the said John retains in those parts.

Confirmation of a grant by William de Insula to Richard de Hanrede and his heirs of certain lands in Grafton, Arningewrth, Brampton, Picheford and Haselbeche with the advowson of the said town (sic), and in Wirninton with the advowson of the said town, and of 4½ knights' fees in Rollesham, Wengrave, Cranesle, Flore and Muselo.

May 4. Northampton.

Admission of Robert son of Walter to the king's peace, as Roger de Wauton and Richard de Hanrede of the county of Northampton have mainperned in the king's court before him for his good behaviour ; and grant that he may stand in the realm securely notwithstanding any trespass against the king or Edward his son or others done by him in the time of the late war in the realm, provided that if he have incurred the penalty of disherison, or ransom, or other penalty for such trespass, he bear it without peril of perpetual imprisonment, life or limb. It is the king's will moreover that if he acquire lands or goods hereafter, he shall incur no loss with regard to them by occasion of the said trespasses, but that he and his heirs shall hold them, provided that they remain faithful to the king and his heirs.

Pardon to Hugh le Fevre of Karleton for the death of Robert de Karleton and of any consequent outlawry ; as it appears by inquisition made by Simon de Hedon and Walter —— that he killed him in self defence.

The like to John le Waleys of West Wikham for the death of Walter de Benchesham and of any consequent outlawry; as it appears by inquisition made by Walter de Bersted that he killed him in self defence.

Simple protection until Michaelmas for Walter de Balum, provided that he stand his trial in the king's court and that he do no damage in the meantime.

Simple protection and safe conduct until Midsummer for Roger de Bradleght, going home and thence passing whither he will.

Simple protection for seven years for the leprous brethren of the hospital of St. Laurence, Bukingham.

The like for one year for Thomas de Farendon, at the instance of Gilbert de Preston.

Presentation of Master William de Clifford to the church of Bekeswell, in the king's gift by reason of the lands of William de Bekewell, the king's enemy, being in the king's hands ; directed to R. bishop of Norwich.

Pardon, at the instance of Oliver de Dynant, to Walter de Wynescote for the death of Robert de Duuland whom he killed in self-defence.

The like to Geoffrey a la Porte of Yildresleye for the death of Robert Prik, as it appears by inquisition made by Simon de Hedon and Walter de Ludham that he killed him in self defence.

Whereas William de Breuse owes no ward or service to the king's castle of Kermerdyn, and yet, at the request of the constable of that castle he has frequently given aid to him of his mere will and still does so ; the king is unwilling that such aid prejudice him as a precedent.

Power to G. de Clare, earl of Gloucester and Hertford, to take the king's prises of goshawks, gerfalcons and falcons, in the towns of Lenn, Boston and Jernemue for this turn, and to have his will thereof ; with mandate to all bailiffs to permit the earl and his bailiffs to do this.

Pardon to Nicholas de Brimesgrave for the death of John le Blik of Cnabewurth.

Presentation of William de Birley to the church of St. Mary, Nottingham, directed to the dean and chapter of York.

Ratification of a grant which Edward the king's son made by letters patent, at the instance of G. de Clare,. earl of Gloucester and Hertford, to the earl's citizens of Kylkenny, that they may take murage for three years to fortify their town, as the neighbouring cities of those parts have been accustomed to take.

Safe conduct until Michaelmas for Bartholomew de Rooston, going to the parts of York.

Acquittance to the abbot of Peterborough of his service due summoned before the king at Oxford three weeks after Easter to subdue with him his enemies together with the king ; as the king is informed by Edward his son that the said abbot satisfied the said Edward of his said service when he was last following the said enemies towards the parts of Holand and Lincoln.

The like to the abbot of Rammeseye.

Pardon, at the instance of Robert Aguilun, to Reynold le Arblaster, for 100s. to be paid at the Exchequer, of the breaking of the gaol of Exeter, when that gaol was in his keeping, by Richard de Chukerel, William le Waleys, John de Irlaunde, William Cole and John Petit, detained therein for larceny, and of the escape of the said thieves from the same; and the king wills that he shall not be occasioned for this at any future time before the king or any justices.

To the barons, sheriffs and whole commonalty of London. Whereas the king has enjoined John de Warenna to do certain special urgent business for him and granted to him 200 marks of their fine of 20,000 marks for having the king's good will; the king commands and requests them to let Master Godfrey Giffard, one of the king's household and chancellor of the Exchequer, have the said sum to deliver to the earl, for the expedition of the said business, and to do this as the king confides in them, and not to omit to do it as they love the king and his honour ; and the king wishes them to know that if they do him this courtesy, they will find him favourable and gracious towards them on fitting occasions.

Confirmation of a grant by Walter Wycher—to whom the king lately granted the wardship of the lands and heirs of Philip de Wauding, who held in chief, and the bailiwick of the forestry of Staunton within the forest of Dene, late of the said Philip—of the premises to Richard de la More.

The like of a grant made by Edward the king's son to Nicholas son of Martin of the wardship of the lands late of William Pipard in Northbovy, Kary and Tefcote.

Mandate to Henry de Alemannia and John de Balliolo, as the king wishes that they shall retain with him the services at present due from the bishop of Durham, Peter de Brus, Nicholas de Bolteby, the baron of Craistok, Henry de la Wale and Ralph son of Randolf for the defence of the northern parts and the grieving and subduing of the king's enemies there, to receive the said services in the king's name and bring them to the town of Northampton by the eve of Holy Trinity, to go thence with the king whither he shall enjoin them.

Acquittance to Master Thomas de Cantilupo and the other executors of W. bishop of Worcester, for the payment by order of the king to Edmund the king's son of 250 marks in full payment of the debts of the said bishop to the king, which sum the king granted to the said Edmund for his expenses in the March.

Commitment to John Carbonel of the king's manors of Beresgrave [in the margin Bremmesgrave] and Northon for five years from Michaelmas next, rendering by the hands of the sheriff of Worcester to Roger de Mortuo Mari 100l. a year which the king has granted to him and his heirs out of the farm of the said manors, and the residue of the farm at the Exchequer ; with mandate to the tenants to be intendant to him.

Whereas Edward the king's son has deputed the abbot of Croyllond to be defender of his parts in the parts of Holland against the king's enemies wishing to come there, and, as the king has heard, the abbot cannot without a strong force of his men resist the said enemies, the king commands all bailiffs to permit his men to be intendant to the abbot for this, in no wise vexing him or his men to do them aid elsewhere for the defence of other parts, provided that the abbot and his men be ready if necessary to defend those parts, and grieve the king's enemies as shall seem more expedient.

May 22. Northampton.

Safe conduct until St. Peter's Chains for Theobald de Trikingham coming to court; provided that he stand his trial and in the meantime do no damage to the king or his lieges.

The like until Christmas for Hano, yeoman of Master Nicholas de Curva Villa going beyond seas in the business of the said Nicholas and returning.

To the constable of the castle of Donington. Whereas by the forfeiture of Robert de Ferrariis the king has taken into his hands the honour of Derby and the castles and lands of the said Robert and his committed the same to Adam de Gesemuth to keep during pleasure and Adam has need of the castle of Donington for the defence of those parts ; the king commands the said constable to deliver it to him to keep at the king's will.

Commitment to the said Adam of the said honour, castles and lands, as above ; so that he answer for the issues thereof at the king's mandate.

Protection and safe conduct until the quinzaine of Midsummer for John de Stutevill in coming to the king's court; directed to the sheriffs of York, Lincoln, Rutland and Northampton, and all bailiffs and others.

Whereas Robert de Ferrariis is bound to Stephen de Eddewrth in 50l. which he ought to have paid to him in the terms of Easter and Whitsunday last, as appears by inspection of the rolls of the Chancery, and the lands of the said Robert are in the king's hands by his forfeiture ; the king, for the indemnity of the said Stephen grants that the said 50l. be levied from the issues of the said lands and delivered to him.

Simple protection until Michaelmas for John de Helle ; provided that the king have not given his lands to any one and that he stand his trial if the king or other will implead him.

Safe conduct, for fifteen days from the morrow of the octaves of the Holy Trinity, for Baldwin Wake, coming to the king's court with his proper household to treat of his peace, and that they may come the more securely the king has given power to Walter de Burgo, earl of Ulvestern, Warin de Bassingburn and Robert de Stotevill of Aton, or one of them, to bring him to him.

Presentation of Robert de Knichton to the church of Egemondon, in the king's gift by reason of the voidance of the abbey of Shrewsbury ; directed to the bishop of Coventry and Lichfield.

Safe conduct until the feast of St. Peter's Chains for Master Henry Luvel coming to court for his business ; provided that he stand his trial, etc., in the meantime, etc.

Commitment to Robert de Glaston of the castle of Salisbury and the bailiwick of the forest of Clarendon, to keep during pleasure ; so that he answer for the issues at the Exchequer.

Safe conduct for one year for the men and servants of the Friars Preachers of Northampton, going through the realm with their carts carrying timber and other things of the said Friars.

Simple protection for one year for the abbot and convent of Rading.

Grant to John de Balliolo, in compensation for his losses sustained in the king's service, of 300 marks out of 600 marks wherein Gilbert de Umframvill was bound to Simon de Monteforti, sometime earl of Leicester, for having seisin of the lands falling to him by hereditary right which were in the hand of the said earl ; with promise that the king will in no wise revoke this grant.

Simple protection for one year for Nicholas son of Martin.

The like until Michaelmas for Robert de Veteri Ponte ; provided that the king have not given his lands and that he stand his trial, etc.

The like for one year for Philip de Columbariis and Egelina his wife.

Notification that Robert de Chaundos has done the king his service due in the present expedition at Northampton from Saturday after the feast of SS. Martin, Tiburtius and Valerian, 50 Henry III, until Saturday after the feast of St. Augustine, to wit, forty days, both days being counted, of which service the king acquits him.

Grant to Emery Bezilles, in compensation for his yearly fee of 20 marks which he used to take at the Exchequer, of the wardship of the lands and heirs of William de Sinagun who held in chief, with the marriage of the heirs ; and if the heirs die under age whereby the wardship pass out of his hands, he shall take his fee at the Exchequer again.

Safe conduct until the feast of St. Peter's Chains for Hugh de Bussey, coming to the king's court ; provided that he stand his trial, etc.

Grant for life to William de Limminges, minister of the king's chapel, for his long service, of 1½d. a day which Robert Curthose, sometime the king's enemy, deceased, used to receive by the hands of the sheriff of Gloucester, of the king's appointed alms, to be received in the same manner as Robert received it.

Safe conduct until the quinzaine of Midsummer for Gilbert de Orreby, coming to the king's court.

Simple protection for one year for John Taylefer, citizen of Canterbury.

May 18. Northampton.

Pardon, at the instance of William de Bello Campo the younger, to Richard son of Henry de Crafton for the death of Richard Orloge of Grafton.

April 28. Northampton.

Grant to Edmund the king's son of 30l. a year which John le Chamberleng, deceased, who held in chief, used to take out of the manor of Blockesham by reason of the wardship of the lands and heirs of Thomas de Gresle, the said lands and heirs now being in the hands of the said Edmund, by grant of the king.

May 18. Northampton.

Whereas the king lately recovered before the king in his court by judgment of the said court against the prior of St. Andrew's, Northampton, by the prior's default, seisin of the presentation to the church of St. Peter, Northampton, and the chapels of Upton and Thorpe, from which the said prior and his convent were accustomed to receive 10 marks yearly by the name of a pension, and has now presented William de Wyndes', king's clerk, to the said church ; the king, ratifying the said pension and wishing to do the prior and convent a more abundant grace, grants that it be increased by another 5 marks of his gift, so that where they used to receive 10 marks yearly they shall now receive 15 marks yearly from the said church and its chapels by the hands of the said William and his successors. And for their greater security the king will procure the bishop of Lincoln to confirm this grant. And the said prior and convent have quitclaimed to the king all right which they had or could have in the advowson of the said church and its chapels.

Simple protection for one year for Alan son of Roald.

The prior and convent of Shrewsbury, announcing the death of Thomas their abbot by letters patent of the chapter, have licence to elect.

May 21. Northampton.

Mandate to Master William de Clifford, guardian of the abbey of Shrewsbury, to deliver the said abbey with everything which he has received from the time of its caption, to the prior and convent thereof, as the king, for a fine of 60 marks, has granted to them all the issues during the present voidance, saving to the king advowsons of churches, knights' fees, wards, reliefs and escheats during the said voidance.

Because the king wishes to have the corn late of Simon son of Simon his enemy, which is in the churchyard of Brikeleswurth, for the maintenance of his household and the munition of his castle of Northampton, he commands the dean of Brikeleswurth to cause the said corn to be delivered to John de Oxhendon, under-sheriff of Northampton for this purpose and not to fail, and the king will save him harmless against all.

In like manner it is written to the archdeacon of Northampton.

Pardon to Roger de Clere of certain trespasses and robberies whereof he is charged.

Whereas the king heretofore commanded William de Clyfford, king's clerk, escheator on this side Trent, to assign to Richard de Ewell, king's serjeant, a marriage of 100l. yearly of land and he has assigned to him the marriage of the heir of William de Bello Campo of Aton, who held in chief, whose lands have been extended at 100s. a year; the king ratifies that assignment as part of the said assignment of 100l.

Appointment of Robert de Tatreshale as keeper of the peace in the county of Lincoln until further order ; with power to him to receive into the king's peace all those who will come into such peace, provided that they stand their trial touching those things which the king or others may bring against them and that they do no damage in the meantime.

Whereas the abbot of St. Edmunds has paid 200 marks whereby the men of the town of St. Edmunds made fine with William de Valencia, the king's brother, and John de Warenna, earl of Surrey, for certain trespasses charged against the said men, at the instance of the said men, to the prejudice of the liberty of the town of St. Edmunds granted to the abbot and the men of the town by the king's progenitors and the king ; the king for the preservation of that liberty unharmed grants to the abbot that from this no prejudice shall arise to him and his heirs.

Grant to Hugh de Nevil of Essex that he may lease all the lands which the king lately restored to him of his grace, for five years from Michaelmas, 50 Henry III, and the king will satisfy such lease; provided that he behave faithfully.

Pardon to the said Hugh of one moiety of the debts wherein he and his ancestors were bound to the king at the Exchequer ; and for the other moiety the king has granted that he and his heirs shall render to him yearly 20 marks at the Exchequer until the whole be paid.

The king salutes all men. Whereas Hugh de Nevill was an adherent of Simon de Monteford, sometime earl of Leycestre, the king's enemy and felon, and his party in the time of the war between the king and him until the battle stricken between the king and him, and after the death of the earl, then adhered to Simon de Montefort, son of the said earl, the king's enemy, making new war in the realm, and then at Bykerdich, at Christmas, 50 Henry III, put himself at the king's award and ordinance with regard to everything, saving life and limb and prison; the king, because the said Hugh put himself at his award and ordinance, and has since behaved loyally and in peace without misprision against him (sans mesprendre vers nus), willing to do him grace in this behalf, in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, receives the said Hugh into his peace, and pardons him his rancour and indignation as well as the trespasses which he did by occasion of the said war so far as is in the king, and so far as belongs to him.

Besides this, with the assent and will of Robert Walerand, to whom the king had given all the lands and tenements late of the said Hugh, with the dower of his mother when it should fall in, he restores and grants to the said Hugh the manors of Wakeringe and Wetherfeld and the aforesaid dower, when it falls in, with the knight's fees which she so holds in dower, and the homage and service of Philip Basset, William de Rehny and the heirs of Robert de Eston, to hold to the said Hugh and his heirs, doing to the king and his heirs the two parts of the services which Hugh owed when he held the said lands entirely, and the services which belong to other lords: so nevertheless that he bear himself well and loyally towards the king and his heirs henceforward; and that he quit claim for himself and his heirs to the aforesaid Robert and his heirs the castle and manor of Stok Curcy and the manors of Radeweye with the hundred and Harham and the homages and services of Simon de Grindham, Philip de Colombers, Walter de Radele, and the heirs of Michael de Spicheswyk for the fees which they hold—all which the king has given to the said Robert for his homage and loyal service, to hold to him and his heirs of the king and his heirs by the third part of the service the said Hugh owed to the king for the whole of the lands aforesaid; also that the said Hugh make to the said Robert and his heirs all the security that the king shall will and that the said Robert shall will that neither he nor his heirs hereafter shall be able to challenge any manner of right or claim in the aforesaid castle, manors, hundred and fees for ever.

Furthermore the king pardons to the said Hugh the moiety of all the debts which he or his ancestors owed to the king, and as to the other moiety the king grants terms to him and his heirs to pay 20 marks a year at the Exchequer.

And this his award the king declares in this manner, that if the said Hugh henceforth do anything against the fealty of the king or his heirs overtly, or if he or his heirs put forth any grievance or challenge as to the said castle, manors, hundred and fees which the king has given to the said Robert, all the above lands which the king has restored to the said Hugh shall be forfeit (encoruz) to the king and his heirs together with the fees and the dower when it falls in. And all these lands the king is bound to restore to Robert Walerand or his heirs entirely as the king had given them to him before, without contradiction, and this grace shall be annulled and repeated.

Moreover, at the request of the said Hugh, the king has received into his peace John de Nevile his brother, who was an adherent of the said earl in the war, and pardons to him his rancour and indignation; and he grants to the said Hugh the manor of Arnhale which the said John had of the said Hugh, to hold of the king and his heirs with all the franchises which used to belong to it before the war, rendering to the king and his heirs at the Exchequer a moiety of the value thereof, by extent, for ever.

Safe conduct for one month from St. Thomas the Martyr for William de Bekeswell, coming to court for his business; provided that he stand his trial in the said court if the king or other will implead him.

Pardon to Gilbert de Umfranville of 300 marks of the 600 marks wherein he was bound to Simon de Monte Forti, sometime earl of Leicester, which came to the king's hands by the forfeiture of the said earl.

Whereas Gilbert de Umfranville made fine with the said Simon in 1,200 marks to have seisin of his lands from the said Simon, whereof he paid to him 600 marks ; and whereas the king has given of the remaining 600 marks 300 marks to John Balliol and pardoned the remaining 300 marks to the said Gilbert, and whereas a writing obligatory of the said money is in the keeping of John de Plessetis, as in an equal hand, the king commands him to deliver that writing to the said Gilbert.

Pardon, at the instance of Richard de la More, to John Gamelin, for the death of Thomas Makerel.

Grant to John le Breton, whom the king has associated with Nicholas de Turri to hold the king's pleas, of 40l. a year at the Exchequer, so long as he be in that office.

Confirmation of a grant which Hagin son of Master Mosseus, Jew, made to Roger de Clifford of a debt of 106l. and a yearly fee of 20l. wherein Roger de Eyvill was bound to the said Jew by charters of the said Roger de Eyvill.

Acquittance to Gilbert de Humframvill of 300 marks as delivered by him, by order of the king, to John de Balliolo, of the 600 marks wherein he was bound to Simon de Monte Forti, sometime earl of Leicester, which by forfeiture of the earl belonged to the king ; and pardon to him of the remaining 300 marks.

Simple protection for one year for Amice late the wife of Robert de Chepeya.

Whereas the king lately by charter granted to Warin de Bassingburn all the lands late of Thomas de Estleyg, the king's enemy ; and the king lately admitted Andrew de Estleyg son of the said Thomas into his peace, and remitted to him his rancour by occasion of the disturbance in the realm on condition of his future good behaviour ; and whereas Warin granted to the said Andrew the manors of Crek, Willeby and Hekham, and the demesne under the wood between Wadinton and Hecam and the manor of Lilleburn, except the advowsons of the churches of the said manors, and except 20l. yearly of land which the said Warin had given to Laurence de Sancto Mauro in Lilleburn and Cotes, late of the said Thomas his father, to hold to the said Andrew and his heirs for ever ; the king grants that if the said Andrew at any time hereafter presume to go against his fealty, whereby he ought to incur the penalty of disherison, the said manors and lands shall be restored to the said Warin or his heirs without contradiction to hold for ever with the other lands of the said Thomas given to him by the said charter.

Confirmation of a lease for twenty years by Henry de la More to Edward the king's son of the manor of Wintreburn Gumore.

Grant, at the instance of Roger de Leyburn, to Master Nicholas de Heyham of those houses with rents and other appurtenances in the city of Lincoln, late of John Mansell, which are the king's escheat through the death of the said John ; to hold to him and his heirs, saving the right of any, by the services due.

Grant to William de Pomes and Simon de Geynvill, for arrears of their yearly fees which they used to receive at the Exchequer and because they have remitted the said fee to the king, of the wardship of all the lands of William Ward who held in chief of the barony of the archbishopric of York, which pertains to the king by reason of the voidance of the said see ; so that they no longer take that fee from the king.

Notification to the keepers of the peace in the counties of Lincoln, Nottingham and York and to the sheriffs of those counties that the king has granted to Benedict and Hagin, Jews of Lincoln, and other Jews of that city for their losses and grievances at the hands of his enemies in the conflict had at Lincoln and in the disturbance in the realm, that their pledges named in the chirographs made between them and their debtors of debts due to them, in whosesoever hands those pledges are, shall be seized into their hands according to law and the custom of the king's Jewry, until the said debts are levied and paid, unless the debtors can shew that they ought to be quit of the said debts ; to endure until Easter.

Grant for three years to Emelina de Lacy, countess of Ulster, and Emelina Longespeye, her daughter, that Thomas de Holebech, be admitted as their general attorney at counties and hundreds in all pleas and plaints in whatsoever courts and that he may appoint attornies in the place of the said countess and her daughter, who, in the king's presence, may ratify and accept whatever the said Thomas and the said attorneys shall do ; directed to justices, sheriffs, reeves and all bailiffs.
