October 1665

Oct. 7.
Nottingham.
John Boawre to Thomas Raban. Last term I delivered you the tallies for Nottinghamshire in order to drawing up an account thereof for Francis Molineux, esq., and promised you two pieces to carry on the business and sue out the quietus and I would pay the fees. There was then in arrear 23l. 4s. 6d., which I hoped to have got allowed for portage of money, etc., but, finding that difficult, I took order for payment of the money into the Exchequer and 25l. 10s. was carried thither, which I hope was paid accordingly, and I ordered the tally to be delivered to you. Now I find but 23l. 4s. 6d. to be in arrear, but according to my stating the account it was 25l. 10s., so I appointed my son to attend you with a particular of the tallies and to get a true debet from you and pay the money accordingly, but I presume the plague frighted his master out of town presently, so he left the business to his fellow clerk and the money is in his hands. I wrote to him to attend you and pay the money as you directed. My suit is that you will certify me by the return of the bearer what progress you have made. I understood you removed immediately out of London from the plague, which has much distracted people and all business. Because I could not stay to see the business effected, I left the money and put the account into your hands and waited your coming to the audit to perfect it with you. I have sent the note of the tallies and the account according to my stating. Through some mistake a serjeant at arms has warrants against Mr. Molineux and me both for 23l. 4s. 6d. as arrears and demands great fees. I have paid the money though I have not received it of the country because I would not have Mr. Molineux obnoxious to danger. Advise me, I beseech you, and if you can by Mr. Auditor or yourself certify anything to satisfy the serjeant, I will give you a piece or two next Thesday night when, I hear, you come hither, for the serjeant demands two fees. Mr. Molineux is only receiver, I but his deputy. We have no money; I laid down that to clear the account. The officers are mistaken surely that state the arrear to [be] 23l. 4s. 6d. Pray give me a true debet and let me know if you received or had a tally for that arrear or for 25l. 10s. which I directed to be paid. [S.P. Supplementary 135, No. 4.]
Oct. 17. Account of moneys due by the Navy Office to divers persons. [S.P. Supplementary 136, No. 375.]
Oct. 24.
Oxford.
Order by John Fenn to Sir Thomas Player for payment to Col. Bullen Reymes of 10,000l. out of the moneys he has or shall have on Sir G. Carteret's account.
Request by Col. Reymes for payment of the said sum to Joseph Horneby, Alderman Backwell's servant. [Copy. Ibid. No. 376.]
Oct. 24.
Oxford.
Sir George Carteret to Sir Thomas Player. Desiring him to pay the said 10,000l. as money shall come in.—Because it is a business of great concernment (it being to pay outland bills of exchange) I shall not interrupt the payment of it by any other assignment. Therefore I desire your compliance, though you answer their occasions but with two or three hundred pounds at a time. [Copy. Ibid.]
Oct. 25. John Boawre [,jun.,] to Thomas Raban. I have been sent out of Nottinghamshire to pay the 25l. 10s. to clear the account of Mr. Molineux of the 18 months' assessment and have left the tally with Mr. Whiting. My father desires you to get the account audited and to get out the quietuses and inform him when the account is passed and what fees are to be paid and he will order you the money. [S.P. Supplementary 135, No. 5.]
